hellbannedguy··on What really happened at the Millennium Tower?
It's pretty rare to have a house, or a building, build on bedrock in the Bay Area.

As a contractor with a foundation that settled it's nerve racking.

That said, very few foundations that settle need to be repaired. The average homeowner thinks the opposite though.

I stopped my settling by draining mine, and the neighbor's roof downspouts to the street.

Even without that fix, I doubt my house would have settled further.

It's true that most buildings/houses settle.

hellbannedguy··on U.S. states file updated antitrust complaint against Google
During Obama it didn't seem like the problem it is today.

I'm not saying it wasen't a problem, but America thought these FANG companies were solving our problems.

I never liked Google Executives going to the White House, but I don't think it was because Obama sold out. Tech was very new. Google honestly wanted to help.

It seemed like every young guy wanted to be Zuck. Hell even Zuck thought he could run for president one day.

It was all so inspiring. Now it's just ugly.

hellbannedguy··on The popularity of e-bikes isn’t slowing down
Ok, how about just busses, and trains?

Most bike thiefs are not homeless, especially high end bikes.

Not to many homeless have a bolt cutter in their worn packs, nor do they have a way to sell, or part out.

In my liberal wealthy enclave, it's middle class guys doing the stealing, or gangs.

(This whole blaming the homeless needs to stop. Most don't have the savy to steal a locked bike. Plus--riding a nice bike is a cop calling card. I know homeless guys who are afraid to carry their own prescriptions in their pack because they frisked so frequently.)

hellbannedguy··on Aaron Swartz Rememberance Day This Monday
Aaron seemed like the was dealing with a Huge amount of stress caused by his school, and the Fed, by himself basically.

He needed more support. More than we gave him.

Does anyone ask themselves why they collect?

I collect everything. I don't have the room to be a Horder, but my compulsion to collect us strong, with the exception of money. I should be collecting money, but that has been too hard for myself.

I started off collecting snails. I would put them on my Tonka Truck, and they were workers. The guys on the roof were the bosses. The others placed all around the truck bed had their own function. As a kid, I was lonely and the garden snails were my friends. (My mom made me put them back after playing.)

I then went into marbles. Kindergarten through 1st grade I was crazy about marbles. I loved them all. The ceramic ones were my favorite because I imagined they were rare, or had a long history behind them. I imagined they were made in a magical exotic country.

I then grew up, and life got in the way. My collecting days were put on hold.

In my twenties, it was first edition books, and any old advertisements, or advertising.

I then got into collecting watches. I never went crazy, but I knew I needed to stop.

I stopped by learning Watchmaking. Even then--I went from collecting watches to collecting tooling.

I'm now so depressed I don't collect anything due to a lot of reasons.

I guess it was about the hunt? Then again, I still look at some of my old books and can't imagine someone mot seeing the value. Someone tossed a 1st edition of The Deep. It was not price clipped, and in mylar wrap. I am still astonished the original owner didn't see the value.

I don't have a point. I just know I'm a Collector at heart. Maybe if I had a more full life, my addiction might be different. It was never a addiction. It was just a passion.

I'm the guy at the beach looking for shiny rocks, even when I was physically passable, and should have been paying more attention to my girlfriend.

I still remember Ingrid saying I came to the beach to be with you, and not collecting small pieces of agate.

And let us buy our meds out of country.

Is anyone here making a living with a drone?

It seemed like a few years ago, a guy could go out and buy a nice drone, and with a bit of hussle, and connections; make a living.

With the price point going down, and the boy in all of us looking for a reason to buy a drone--is anyone making a living here with there's.

There are some old studies on opioid (prescription type meds) use in rest homes.

They found that most patients did not want to increase their dose of the opioid. They just didn't want to be cut off the meds they were given. It makes so much sence.

I'm to lazy to look it up.

I don't understand this all, or nothing mentality when it comes to drugs.

I truly feel the American Opioid crisis could have been less devastating if government provided patients/addicts with with access to the medication with limits.

Actually, bupenorpine would probally be the better drug to make available to anyone that wanted it.

hellbannedguy··on Fundamentals of Piano Practice
I am leaning to play piano on a disguarded Hammond CMS-103. (Someone put this out by the curb with a free sign. It was originaly over 7 grand. Why did I include this. Because I'm shocked at what people toss.)

Anyway, I labeled all the keys on my machine. C-D-G-F-G-A

I memorized C for chopsticks. (C will always be the white key to the left of the two black keys.)

I memorized F for Fork. (F will always be to left of three black keys.)

I then found a song I liked on Google with chords.

I picked a Ronny Millsap song, and played it over, and over again.

Am I any good--hell no, but keeping piano/guitar simple helped me.

Eddie Van Halen saw that his son was having a very hard time learning to play bass guitar. Wolfe told his father their are just too many chords. Eddie gave him some great fatherly advice.

"You don't need to learn all the chords. 11 chords will allow you to play a lot of songs."

A lot of Country, and rock, songs only have a few chords.

You mean old middle class, and poor homeowners, can stay in the house they raised a family in?

The only reason my high school educated 80 years old mother in declining health can stay in a home, and county, she feels somewhat safe is because of prop 13.

Her biannual property taxes are still a big deal when they arrive.

I've said this before, but I'm beginning to think if you didn't live through the craziness before Prop 13, you won't ever quite get it.

Prop 13 has been the only blessing most homeowners have been given.

If you want to put income limits on the gift of prop 13 fine, but doing away with it completely would be evil. By income limits I mean the guy making $600,000/year, and a huge bank account, could probally still survive without prop 13 protection.

The 80 year old lady, or man, surviving on 1/2 widower's blue collar pension is another story.

(I'm for means testing on all programs. I'm also for tieing all societal fees/fines---speeding tickets, registration, patent fees, etc. to 1040 income/assets wealth.)

hellbannedguy··on Let’s Put an End to Prosecutorial Immunity (2018)
When I was younger (Actually I was pulled over about a year ago for no reason.). I was pulled over for basically an old car, and hair below my ears. I didn't want to say anything, but knew if didn't kiss their badge, I might get pricy ticket.

The one time I didn't answer their rediculious questions, like, "Where you are going. What are you buying at Safeway. It seems strange you are buying dinner at 10 pm". These were the actual questions.

She walked around my car looking for something to ticket, and then said I was speeding. A $350 ticket.

Yea, I tried to fight it, but she actually showed up in court, and the judge sided with the Police Officer.

(In California their was a bill that would essentially legalize jaywalking. It was drafted because cops were using jaywalking violations to harass, and intimidate citizens. Basically, I have nothing on you, but I could site you for jaywalking.

Governor Neusome vetoed the bill. I get where he was comming from, but still disappointed.

I don't know the solution other than every cop, including undercover cops, should have a camera on every minute of their shift. Only using a bathroom could the cop flip the cover on the camera.

Those tapes should be allowed to be retrieved in an easy fashion by anyone. If cops resist, their are many people in line for that job.)

hellbannedguy··on A cautionary tale from the streets of San Francisco
I've given up on affordable housing in California.

I feel we need to open up vacant federal, state, and local land to free camping.

(Neusome is doing some good work. Near Candlestick Park boat launch, there is a lot set aside for RV's, and car, to those that are homeless. Could you imagine parking overnight without getting a ticket? I've know two people who were living out of their cars. They both told me it as a nightmare of cops ticketing them, and whatnot.

Sausalito has a dedicated spot for homeless, but it's no model of success. The town decided they didn't want low income, or homeless individuals mored off shore. Anchorouts have been in Richardson Bay for over a 100 years. The town let a private harbormaster decide who stays, and who's boat is going to be crushed. People had knowhere to go, so they set up tents at Dunphy Park. The Liberal citizens didn't like looking at the homeless, so the town moved them.

So basically Sausalito crested their own homeless problem?

The new spot of dirt the homeless were given came with a bunch of rules. (Homeless have a lot of problems. A huge list of rules is not the answer. I happened to read a Section 8 lease awhile ago. It was 47 pages of rules.

Cops are handing out tickets for minor infractions. The one that got me were two $500 tickets. The cops said, they won't pay them, so the fine doesn't really matter.

As usual the cop missed a lot of legal training when going to the academy. You don't pay a ticket, and it eventually turns into a bench warrant. The homeless are housed eventually in jail. Brilliant!

Local rant over.)

As I said previously we need places they can camp.

We need outhouses, and hand washing stations, and maybe a place they can cook.

Their are some people who will never get off the streets.

I'm done waiting for housing.

Oh yea, don't like stepping in crap; provide porta potties.

I have a hard time finding free restrooms in SF, and I'm not homeless.

Watch the increase in Homelessness in CA in the next few months. It's going to be ugly.

I don't feel like debating anyone. The way homeless are treated has bothered me for years.

hellbannedguy··on Facebook chooses profits over people
I have found when it comes to career, or money, 95% plus shelve their morality. (I'm suprised Paul Graham hasen't wrote one of his infamous essays on the subject. He must have seen a lot in his times.)

Be it a Psychiatrist, Chiropractor, Attorney, Priest, entrepreneur, or tech worker, they are all the same with morality.

If it affects Their Financial Security, or Financial Future--They Become Sheep. (sorry about the caps.)

When I was younger I walked out of a Chiropractic school. I knew the crux of the profession, the Subluxation, was very rare, and if people got better through manipulation of bones---it was all placebo. I was alwready in debt for 10 grand, and had a A- average.

I used to think how can all these people sit through this, and not question the profession.

I'm no hero though.

I dropped out because I developd a huge anxiety disorder, and had some kind of breakdown.

If my mind was stronger, I probally would have graduated, and hung up a shingle and go into denial over my worthiness. (I would have never done a Rotary on even my worst enemy.)

My point is many people like to belive they have morals. I sometimes think the only people left with true morality might be the Amish.

Sure people like to believe they have string convictions, and ethics; but when it comes to financial security they are followers. They might disagree internally, but really taking a stand is very rare.

You would think a wealthy man who could afford to be moral, and ethical, would take advantage of their privileged situation?

No----they are the worst offenders.

I also wanted repairability, and room for future upgrades inside the laptop, but gave up on that one.

hellbannedguy··on Show HN: I built a sonar into my surfboard
Years ago I was a quarter mile off shore at Bolinas. I was just on my body board.

This was before I knew about the amount of sharks out there.

I told my chain smoking buddy to hold on to my Bullmastiff. She was at least 160lbs.

I casually noticed black shadows under my board. I thought maybe Batrays. I thought if it was a shark, I'd see the fins. (Wasn't thinking right. Recovering from a nervous breakdown.)

All of a sudden I see my dog swimming towards me. I didn't even know she could swim. They were both just tiny specks at the beach, but she was coming out.

I paddled towards her. We met in the middle. She put her two paws on my board, and we both kicked in. She was tired, and panting.

I got to shore feeling relieved. My buddy said he saw a fin moving towards my dog when she was swimming out.

I haven't been out since.

I always felt student input should be a huge factor in teacher dismissals.

I felt my classmates were very fair with teachers. They didn't know the politics at the instition.

They didn't dislike a teacher because the course work was difficult.

They didn't like teachers who phoned their class in like an annoyance. They didn't like egotistical bullies which in my schools we all tenured teachers.

hellbannedguy··on The Off-Grid Laws of Every State in America
California needs to lighten up on regulations.

I like California. I have lived here my entire life, but the regulations/fees/fines are outrageous.

I looked into buying some property years ago near Bolinas. I asked the Realator why it was so cheap. She said you can't build-- can't even set up a tent. You can't even take a nap on the land. He, "So what's it good for?". Her, "Maybe leech lines?".

Want to build your cabin, or home.

In my town, of San anselmo, the town council decides pretty much every aspect of your build down to window placement (Homeowner might see Karen naked if that window isn't higher. They even ok your roof type, wether you use stucco, or shiplap, and even the Petunias in your front yard.

Neusom is trying, but ADU's are being used by rich people to gain more house footage.

And there's a part of me that wants all building stopped until we figure out this water problem.

hellbannedguy··on The Structure of a Stand-Up Comedy (2018)
I have not seen a funny comic in such a long time.

Maybe it my age, but I thought I had decent taste in comedy.

I never thought Leno was funny. Seinfield was tedious.

It just seems like the last two decades have been pitiful?

I heard a convict being interviewed a few years ago. The interviewer asked him what he does all day. He said, "I try to figure out why Saturday Night Live is not funny, and ways to make it funny again." The lady looked at him like he was crazy, but I kinda understood what he was getting at.

I think about some of my favorite comedians over the years, and they all had two things in common: were poor, or low middle class, griping up. And did a fair amount of drugs.

Drugs that would get you fired these days.

I'm not equating drugs with good comedy. I just don't know the reason. It couldn't be that all the material has alwready been said?

In the USA, I would like to see laws limiting whom, and how much realestate a person can accumulate.

1. You need to be a citizen in order to buy realestate.

2. Wealthy guys can only buy two, or three at most.

3. Outlaw corporate speculation in realestate, like Blackstone.

hellbannedguy··on Atari ST in daily use since 1985 [video]
I bought my 1040st, and a dot matrix printer, with most of my first year's student loan. (Almost all of it.)

I was so embarrassed I told no one, even my girlfriend at first. It was a big expensive secret. My car was a Chevette, with a bad tranny. Anyone in their right mind would have bought a better car.

Not one teacher could differentiate type written papers, from dot matrix. Besides the fear of public speaking, I always worried a teacher would find out I didn't write my paper on a twpewritter.

I tried to get my girlfriend to like it, but it was a big No. I remember drawing, in Paint, a penis. I even got it to vibrate. (It was not easy back then.)

She thought it was cute, and we had sexy time, but she didn't like the machine. I could just tell she didn't like my computer.

In retrospect--maybe she thought I should spend that kind of money on her?. I remember thinking, I'm a glad about equal rights. After all she was from a wealthy family, and I was poor. (sorry about reminiscing.)

Now most of you think it was my dick pic, but it wasen't. I think she thought the computer was nerdy?

She wasn't happy with my Bullmastiff either, but I loved my dog. She didn't like it when my dog had her period. She once said to me, "It's the dog, or me?". I didn't say anything, but my Elsa was my family. It was no decision to be made. I would have died for that dog.

I don't think we ever liked each other, but boy was she attractive.

She's now some big wig at a computer company, and consultes on computing.

I only bought it for word processing.

I wasen't a computer guy. I just knew at the time college was a joke, and if I was going to write all those useless papers; I wasen't going to do it on a IBM, with Whitout.

I felt like I was cheating.

Got my degrees. Had a nervous breakdown. The world seemed grey, and depressing.

I got tired of looking at that horrid beige idle computer on my desk one day, and tossed it all. (I'm color blind, but thought that beige was horrid.)

I wish I kept it now though.

(I miss my dog, and computer. My girlfriend not so much, but she was stunning. Way out of my league.)
