Of course.
helge9210··on The country where having a pet could soon land you in jail
Israel has a law proposed (by religious parties) to tax dogs $2500 annually.

helge9210··on A Look Back at the USSR Computer Industry
My uncle spent time in prison for selling imported goods.

Are we discussing the same USSR?

helge9210··on Political Activism: What's the Point?
> The Inefficacy Problem

In February 2010 during inauguration of President of Ukraine there were no more than dozen of us, protesters and political activists, surrounded by no less than five hundred of the riot police goons. We knew the president would prepare and weaken the country to be taken by Russia.

You don't think "what can I do alone?" You assume you are the only one knowing the truth.

In the end we were right. Personally, I would choose being wrong back than any day.

helge9210··on A Look Back at the USSR Computer Industry
> Mid level family could import computer from west

In USSR mid level families didn't have legal access to imported goods.

helge9210··on A Look Back at the USSR Computer Industry
> Why didn’t they have more computers?

One of the reasons: ideology.

Replacing 50 people team with 5 people team and a computer (less people working less hard) while possible technically wasn't desirable.

> were to be used

This is the key phrase. The intent was there, but actual deployment in _some_ schools happened much later, in 1990-91.

> he benefited from the enmity between the Social democrats and the Communist

To support Hitler Stalin ordered German Communists to not join forces with Social Democrats.

helge9210··on China mortgage boycott data erased by censors as crisis spreads
Let's assume, there is no censorship and anyone can join the boycott. What is the intended successful outcome of the boycott?

If noone would do anything (no boycott), some customers would have to pay mortgage for apartments that won't be finished ever.

With boycott, the blast radius will be bigger, possibly affecting the banking system.

What options do authorities have?

helge9210··on To Ruby from Python
On the surface, Ruby and Python are mostly equivalent languages.

Internally, memory management is done differently, for example.

Now add a magic of Ruby on Rails and ActiveSupport to one side and machine learning toolsets to the other.

helge9210··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
Example of compensation not tied to a time spent: a company might pay someone to do nothing, so this someone doesn't do something for a competitor.

Value sharing is a basic framework for compensation negotiation. Employee wants to get all the value derived from own contribution. Employer wants to pay absolute minimum employee is willing to accept. Paying more than derived value doesn't make economic sense, so compromise will be somewhere within this range. If acceptable minimum is below the derived value, compromise is impossible. Time spent working is a free variable in all this.

helge9210··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
> and abundant housing

Not relevant to the topic, but this one is not true.

helge9210··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
> should be compensated in proportion to the time

This assumption doesn't always hold.

Employee and employer might agree to share the value created which is not always a function of time spent working.

helge9210··on Why programmers are not paid in proportion to their productivity (2009)
USSR was exactly like this.
helge9210··on Any self made millionaires here? Was it worth it?
First third of my life I was living in a state that officially refused to recognize private property (USSR). Modern Russia, for example, while officially recognizing private property rights, does not uphold them.
helge9210··on Any self made millionaires here? Was it worth it?
I mean having a concept of private property.

> and save [...] a year from age 21 to 67 you’ll have [...] in savings

Assumption of savings vehicle being available for 46 years sometimes doesn't hold.

helge9210··on Why the government took home prices out of its main inflation index
> $600k in total interest and principle for a $300k sticker-price house over 30 years

Present value of $600k paid over 30 years is less than $600k. Depending on the discount rate it might be even less than $300k now.

helge9210··on State Dept Guidance on DPRK IT Workers [pdf]
By the time USSR started to crumble KGB decided to embed spies and criminals into Western societies hiding them amongst a wave of refugees and economic migrants.

I would expect the same happening this time.

helge9210··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
The latter.

As an example I can think of:

- jQuery, Backbone/Knockout, React progression

- C++03, C++11

- Qt Widgets, Qt Quick

- SQL to NoSQL and back again

- Windows NT, 2000, Server

On the other hand, AWS Lambda seems like CGI/FastCGI all over again, but with proper automation, so I have at least one data point on 20 year cycles (to confirm we need someone who is in profession for at least 40 years).

helge9210··on Ask HN: Why can't I learn anymore?
Half life of knowledge in our profession is more or less a year and a half.

This means 5 years of experience is the maximum you can accumulate.

Maybe years are not a good metric for experience.

helge9210··on Zelensky Compound NDA
Thank you for your support!

Expecting current situation I and my family left Ukraine in 2012, so we currently help refugees arriving to Germany.

helge9210··on Zelensky Compound NDA
> We lost the previous war with RF, then paid a huge price for that in 1932-1934

My grandfather survived this and was the one who told me about the famine.

Since then I have panic attack from time to time from the idea I won't have anything to give my children when they ask for something to eat.

It's even worse now, because that's what is happening on occupied territories.

helge9210··on Zelensky Compound NDA
> I don’t know who would enforce the NDAs for Zelensky’s bunker

Leaking this information would be enforced by court under "Leaking the state secrets".

I'm not a lawyer, but if I remember correctly, in Ukraine you can't be prosecuted for leaking the secret information unless it's clearly labeled as secret and you signed a consent to access it. If you don't sign, you are not supposed to get access.

So this is the case, where to access the secret bunker they have to know what is the secret and sign they understand the implications.

Edit: in some cases before the war it was better to not consent. This would limit access to certain data, but would also give more freedom in case you want to travel or work abroad.

Sometimes (I don't have a statistic) in Israel this is used for placebo effect. Patient doesn't control anything, but still might feel a relief.
