helge9210··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
> Not sure why 2019 specifically, it's 2024.

Because in 2019 real estate was not only expensive by itself, but also all the future growth was added to a price.

Today in 2024 you can buy very cheap in some places (north, for example).

> there was a stock-market crash in 1983

Not just stock-market. By the time of the crash, Likud laid waste to the whole economy to undermine "the left".

helge9210··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
I never had my own room. Up until age of 14 I slept on bunk bed sharing a room with my brother and my parents, so it doesn't always mean a separate room.
helge9210··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
But your parents didn't live in Israel 2019. Israel 1983 was more like today's Venezuela or Argentina. If you move today to a place comparable to Israel in 1983, you'll be able to afford even more space than your parents.
helge9210··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
Absolutely not. "Jihad" is mainly about personal internal struggle. "Amalek" is only about genocide.
helge9210··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
The main lesson of the Holocaust is: if someone is saying he is going to kill you, you believe him and act accordingly.

Let's for the sake of argument assume you're correct and these were just words. How come at least 200k civilians in Gaza are dead as the result?

helge9210··on ICC issues warrants for Netanyahu, Gallant, and Hamas officials
He referred to Palestinians as Amalek.

Since there are not many Hebrew books written over the centuries (for obvious reasons), modern literature is heavily relying on religious texts for metaphors and analogues.

Calling someone Amalek is a call for genocide.

> There is no right to firearms in the way there is in the US. You don’t really have school shootings out here, and society seems to be ok? Nobody seems to want to band together to make a militia. Nobody in Germany is like, “we need more guns to prevent government overreach.”

There are people that want to make a militia for exactly this reason. Just very few of them.

In general, the country feels like a modernized fragment of Holy Roman Empire. The feudal system was painted and polished, but the divide between nobility and serfs is still visible under a proper angle.

helge9210··on Programmer in Berlin: Culture
> It’s not a slippery slope, and the country hasn’t devolved into authoritarian groupthink.

Society position on COVID-19 and (more recent) Israel-Gaza situation (the word is deliberately wrong, but this is not the main point here) really walks and quacks like groupthink.

helge9210··on Ractor – a Rust Actor Framework
Seeing "channel" and "actors can inter-communicate, via remote procedure calls" do I understand this correctly this is not an actor model implementation?
helge9210··on 12 Months of Mandarin
I emigrated twice within ten years (move, learn the language, find a job, than find a job, move, learn the language). I sometimes wonder how does it feel not having to run and push all the time just not to fall behind.

The price for the motivation could be higher you're willing to pay.

helge9210··on ChatGPT has caused a drop in demand for online digital freelancers
"Automation-prone fields like [...] software"

I wonder where is this idea coming from?

helge9210··on ChatGPT has caused a drop in demand for online digital freelancers
Intel 4004 was introduced in 1971.

In my opinion, most of the gains in productivity since than can be attributed to automation.

Helen Maroulis is another athlete openly talking about concussion.

I'm a referee in wrestling (Olympic styles) and I don't let the match to continue until the competition doctor clears the wrestler after a hit in the head.

helge9210··on 'Like we were lesser humans': Gaza boys, men recall Israeli arrest, torture
> But how exactly would you propose to remove Hamas from power without a lot of civilian deaths?

Did you consider that massive civilian death could play into Hamas' hand? One of the insurgency techniques, where the action causes overreaction to amplify support ("action-reaction-revolution").

What happens in Palestine (a territory of the state of Israel plus the territories under the occupation) is called insurgency. To end the insurgency you can either withdraw, exterminate the insurgent population and/or convince the population to not support the insurgent.

Insurgency is always a fight for the legitimacy. The problem with this conflict is the fight for legitimacy happens not only between Israel and Palestinian Arabs, but also within these parties. Israel has official stance on supporting two state solution and un-official de-facto single state goal. Palestinians have Hamas, PLO, Islamic Jihad etc.

helge9210··on Fossil Fuel Use Increasing, Not Decreasing
Soviet Union had almost all the technologies to create efficient plans.

I see Soviet Union and modern tech giants as two extremes here. In USSR party people had a final say in planning, often disregarding "efficient" part. In tech giants people are out of the loop and decisions are made "by algorithm".

Which alternative do you like more?

helge9210··on EV Sales Now Equal 17% of World Auto Sales

In Germany new Tesla Model 3 is cheaper than any comparable (275 HP, multimedia, cruise control, full size) ICE car.

helge9210··on Taking on SpaceX: Why Germany is building its own spaceport
It's more complicated. Companies have no access to senior software engineers, so companies can't handle complex/large projects, so management doesn't get the experience to derive more value from the engineering work, so the company can't afford senior software engineers (a feedback loop). In this environment junior engineers become senior only by the length of tenure, not by the experience of handling more complexity.

I immigrated to Germany from Israel (and to Israel from Ukraine), so my University friends are all over the world, but not in Germany.

helge9210··on Taking on SpaceX: Why Germany is building its own spaceport
> finding a decent developer is near impossible

Like in a joke about Mongolia, where the population density is so low, some Mongolians never seen another Mongolian.

I'm two years in and yet to see a senior software engineer in real life in Germany.

helge9210··on Taking on SpaceX: Why Germany is building its own spaceport
From what I see in Germany, this project will be drowned to death in meetings to prepare meetings to define policies even before the first rivet is ordered to be produced.

Nothing to see here. Just naked propaganda.

helge9210··on [dead]
> overthrow of the Ukrainian government and spiraled into a civil war in Donbas

There was no "overthrow". President, prime minister, other members of the government disappeared (later appeared in Russia), so fail-safe mechanisms, already present in the law, were enacted.

There was no "civil war" -- it was Russian invasion from the start.

helge9210··on Musk attacked German support for migrants and promoted call to support far-right
AfD are the hybrid between a populist and a political prostitute. They voice the real pain points (COVID madness, high cost of energy, immigration etc.) but the proposed solutions are either stupid or paid by their sponsors or both (for example, avoiding vaccines entirely, leaving EU, lifting anti-Russian sanctions etc.)
helge9210··on Musk’s X Is Biggest Outlet of Russia Disinformation, EU Says
It's the first time I saw someone counting it in trillions.

When certain (randomly picked by me) set of accounts for a year talks about "gender something...", "man something else...", "2nd Amendment...", "new use of chat AI..." or just some memes and all together (perceived by me empirically) start to translate "Instead of sending help to Ukraine Biden should send help to deal with Hawaii/SF fentanyl.../South border...", I jump to conclusions. Without mentioning Ukraine all these problems are real and do require some form of government intervention. The moment Ukraine appears in the discourse it makes one wonder how shipping M142 HIMARS or MGM-140 ATACMS to Hawaii would help.

helge9210··on Musk’s X Is Biggest Outlet of Russia Disinformation, EU Says
I did notice some groups of accounts synchronously shift into Russian-Ukraine war topic while posting previously on some unrelated subjects (like crypto, stocks in general, internal US politics, health, etc.)
helge9210··on Appeals court rules White House likely overstepped 1st Amendment on social media
> a case where the government should not step in

There are limits to government mandate, it's not allowed to cross, no matter what.

In addition to this case, there are several cases (in Germany, in Israel etc.) where the court pointed out the limits were crossed.

There is a possibility to change the limits through democratic process for a following government.

helge9210··on Elon Musk Acknowledges Withholding Satellite Service to Thwart Ukrainian Attack

helge9210··on Elon Musk Acknowledges Withholding Satellite Service to Thwart Ukrainian Attack
I was under impression, that providing service in and around Crimea would be a violation of the current sanctions. So, I guess, for any request by Ukrainian government directly to US-based company to provide communication service over sanctioned territory in a warzone the default answer would be "No".
helge9210··on Ask HN: Why there is a labour shortage in Germany?
There are several reasons to this.

"Arbeitsbeschaffungsmaßnahme" (job creation) is a one. Amount of people employed has higher priority than efficiency. So instead of having 5 people doing everything efficiently companies hire 50 to do everything manually for food. If the company wants to do things efficiently, the other reason kicks in: psychological inability to pay competitive salary, so most of the companies in Germany don't have access to competent engineers and management.
