heftig··on Pack: A new container format for compressed files
I think that point is about it not supporting streaming compression where the output of the packer is immediately fed into something like a pipe or a TCP connection.

You can do this with both tar and ZIP. If all you have is SQLite, you need to fully create the local database (be it in a file or in memory) before you can transmit it somewhere else to be stored or unpacked.

heftig··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
Slack calls and "huddles" still do not work in Firefox, either.

Way back before huddles were implemented it used to work. Then they broke it and now it's Chromelike-only.

heftig··on Chrome's next weapon in the War on Ad Blockers: Slower extension updates
This only applies to changes to extension code and not merely changes to blocklists.

Chrome's manifest v3 requires extensions to ship static blocklists.

heftig··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids
Does it have to be anhydrous? Seems like a waste to go for the more expensive stuff when you're going to dissolve it anyway. Food-grade citric acid monohydrate should be cheaper.
heftig··on Ardour 8.0
I believe most plugins expose their GUI only as an X window that needs to be nested in an application window, so any change here would require reimplementing the GUI of a lot of plugins.

But even if we do want to take this hurdle, is it even possible yet? What interfaces are available to do this on Wayland and embed a plugin-drawn GUI in a GTK 3, GTK 4, Qt 5 and/or Qt 6 application?

My guess is we still need a new spec that would probably revolve around OpenGL/EGL or Vulkan/WSI, but I'm not sure, and there's also the question of how input events are delivered.

heftig··on Windows 11 system components use the default browser to open links in Europe
To enforce the use of Edge, they're using URLs with the "microsoft-edge" scheme.

Some time ago Microsoft made it impossible to reassign this scheme to another app like EdgeDeflector.

PS: It was KB5007262 that "addresses an issue that might improperly redirect OS functionality when you invoke microsoft-edge: links."

heftig··on Switching from Chrome to Firefox
Yeah, they're enabled by default only on Nightly. Apparently they're still considered "experimental".

Officially, you enable them through the MAC extension, which also adds some more UI.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account...

Other extensions (like Tree Style Tab) can also cause container tabs to be enabled.

heftig··on Microwaved plastic containers release microplastics into food
Yeah, toilet paper is supposed to rapidly fall apart when it's wet. If the wipes don't do the same thing they're not actually flushable.
heftig··on I Still Use Windows 95 (2008)
Someone I know is still working with an old HELOS particle size analyzer, which came with a Windows 95 PC and an ISA interface card. Considering the daunting cost of a new machine, they're doing everything they can to keep the PC alive.
heftig··on Google Pixel Fold
It means "not tested", which might as well be zero.
heftig··on Microsoft fixes 5-year-old Defender bug, reducing Firefox-related CPU use by 75%
The effect is created by scaling and blurring the storyboard images that are also used for the seek preview. The image is refreshed every ten seconds, with a CSS opacity animation fading from the old background image to the next over a couple of seconds.

This sounds like it should be relatively cheap if composition is properly accelerated.

heftig··on Sucralose is a negative modulator of T cell-mediated responses in mice
Maybe making "bread" which is almost entirely cellulose would be possible. Still a carbohydrate, but not a digestible one.
heftig··on Sucralose is a negative modulator of T cell-mediated responses in mice
What are time sharing mice?

PSA: Be careful with xylitol. It's lethally toxic to dogs and still 60% of the calories of regular sugar. I would prefer stevia for sweetening.
heftig··on LibreWolf: A privacy-focused Firefox fork
It makes all of the changes supposed to "improve privacy" (both TR and TE), resulting in the conflicts described in that article.
heftig··on Former U.S. congressman, operative pleads guilty to election fraud charges
I think existing systems like Helios have already solved this problem?
heftig··on Google gives Europe a ‘reject all’ button for tracking cookies
I think access logs as generated by most web servers require a GDPR notice to be compliant, as IP addresses are considered personal information.
heftig··on Why are some egg yolks so orange?
Do corporations and other juridical persons also get a social credit score? This abuse was committed by a corp, not some farmer.
heftig··on Rustaceans at the border
Yes, it's always read. If the file didn't require updating, a build with and without `--locked` will be identical. If it did require updating, `--locked` will make cargo exit with an error.
heftig··on Rustaceans at the border
No, it is. Even without `--locked`, the Cargo.lock file is only updated when it no longer fulfills the Cargo.toml because the latter was edited (and then only making the minimal changes necessary), or explicitly using `cargo update`.
heftig··on Firefox UI/UX History
I think using a theme with a high contrast between the active tab and inactive tabs is probably the easiest way to fix the UX for you. E.g. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/proton-redone-hybri...
heftig··on Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses (2020)
Games on cards have a minimum firmware version. The firmware won't let you launch them without updating first.
heftig··on Payhawk is officially Bulgaria’s first unicorn
I guess one reason is that initial growth of online service providers (and especially payment processing) is often driven by sex-related use, e.g. sex work or art.

If the provider becomes "mainstream enough", these uses then get banned to satisfy investors, key customers and upstream services, driving the demand to the next startups.

PS: Or rather, were always banned from the start, but enforcement was lax until they were no longer an important part of the customer base.

heftig··on Worldle
No, you would get the distance from the border to the other end of the large country, since that is longer.
heftig··on PipeWire 0.3.46
The setting is in 10-default-policy.lua.
heftig··on Worldle
You pick whatever gives you the largest distance.

For every point in both territories, find the closest point in the other territory. From these pairs of points, find the pair with the largest distance. That distance is your Hausdorff distance.

heftig··on PipeWire 0.3.46
I actually turned that off as I prefer keeping the headphones in A2DP mode and using a separate microphone.
heftig··on Worldle
Not quite, you'd get the maximum distance from the extreme end of one territory to the nearest point of the other.
heftig··on Version 100 in Chrome and Firefox
Yes and yes.
heftig··on Version 100 in Chrome and Firefox
Except if your UA reports Firefox on Linux, where calls and huddles remain unavailable to this day.

I wouldn't call that a success.
