hector_vasquez··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
This seems like an eminently solvable problem.

My car knows when its key fob is inside it with great precision, to the point that I cannot even lock the doors while it is inside. My iPhone knows when it is itself in the car, so when I want to use it while driving, I have to dismiss a warning message, which I adeptly do with muscle memory.

Seems to me if cars supported driver and passenger authentication, most illegal device usage could be stopped rather trivially.

hector_vasquez··on Oxide Computer Company: Initial boot sequence
People who worked at Docker, Joyent, and Sun would be the ones to answer your question :). Consider the possibility that the kernel and the h/w are increasingly at odds on commodity server hardware.
hector_vasquez··on Is Inequality Inevitable?
How are you defining a "calorie"? The number printed on the package? Because that number is basically meaningless.

Nor is there any evidence whatsoever that deficit spending harms overall growth. In fact, deficit spending is utterly indispensable for optimizing growth.
hector_vasquez··on Ford and VW Agree to Share Costs of Self-Driving and Electric Cars
A lot of folks said the same thing about their horses and buggies. 20 years from now, people will roll their eyes at the view that electric vehicles are inferior to gas guzzlers. You'll come around.
hector_vasquez··on Dear Agile, I’m Tired of Pretending (2018)
Nobody in charge cares about the estimate of an individual task. They care about progress toward program goals. With experience and skill, estimation mistakes tend to come out in the wash.
hector_vasquez··on Self-Driving Cars Have a Problem: Safer Human-Driven Ones
For many years, manually flown aircraft have required radically different safety practices from manually driven cars. I wonder why you think the addition of automation changes that.
hector_vasquez··on Sign In with Apple [video]
The SSO "market" is only a market if the SSO providers are monetizing your data at the expense of your privacy. Private authentication is not a "market" almost any of us needs or wants, but rather a right that we deserve.

Your "they're stealing my emails!" outrage is hard to sympathize with.
hector_vasquez··on Cambridge's Ambitious Protected Bike Lane Law
As a former NYC cyclist, I can say that your accusations are patently absurd. First, if cyclists blasted through red lights without looking we would all get hit by cars within a few intersections. Second, of course cars have come close to hitting you. It's New York. That's how they drive there. It is always jarring to hear what I anecdotally believe to be a minority of pedestrians who actually believe that cyclists are in any way, shape, or form more of a threat to their safety than motor vehicles. Luckily for us all, NYC is getting more and more friendly to cycling, though it still does have a long way to go.
hector_vasquez··on Tesla sues former employees for allegedly stealing data, Autopilot source code
People claiming that Tesla logistics is a "shit show" does not mean that Tesla failed to build a valuable logistics system. Check your logic there. Your saying something doesn't make it true. It would be far more plausible to claim that the repeated theft of Tesla logistics IP implies Tesla has valuable logistics IP.
hector_vasquez··on Tesla sues former employees for allegedly stealing data, Autopilot source code
Seems quite odd that people keep trying to steal worthless property.
hector_vasquez··on US Government Tracking Journalists and Immigration Advocates
Involuntarily locking up and interrogating someone for 13 hours isn't "asking for information," and yes, it is unreasonable. In the land of the free/home of the brave that is known as an "arrest," and it can only be done if there's a charge. This is simply using passport flagging and ports of entry to persecute the political enemies of the current administration.
hector_vasquez··on How badly are we being ripped off on eyewear? Former industry execs tell all
Don't get me wrong, it's great that you found a way to reduce the work stress in your life! But ... I genuinely cannot tell whether the guy posting on Hacker News that he "dropped out of society" is being serious or tongue-in-cheek.

If paying society's currency for all the solar panels and the batteries and the gas and the generator and the refrigerator and the laptops and the deeded property and all the other stuff that society created is dropping out of society, I wonder what it is like to be a member of society.

hector_vasquez··on A listing of companies that don't do whiteboard job interviews
As a manager, finding folks who can turn thought into code is certainly required. However, a whiteboard does not and cannot measure that. The only effective way to measure the ability to turn thought into code is for them do it for real. Writing on a whiteboard is simply not coding nor is it an adequate proxy.
hector_vasquez··on Showing the world how real soy sauce is supposed to taste
D.O.P. Balsamic Vinegar, the only authentic Balsamic Vinegar, goes for well over $100 for a tiny 100ml bottle, and given the multi-year, multi-barrel method of brewing each bottle, it is a miracle it can be found for even that cheap. Congratulations for having a cabinet full of it! May I come over sometime? ;)
hector_vasquez··on Product-building articles by PMs at major tech companies
I work at a big company and about half the PMs I work with were developers, myself included (for around 15 years). I have found this to be totally normal both when I was coding all day and now that I'm managing all day. There are no lanes.
hector_vasquez··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2016)
Nearly every single one of those guys has left, and for very good reason. Ask around.

Small, start-up like environment. At Wal-Mart, a Fortune-1 company. Think about it. (Also, having worked there ... um ... no. The place is worse than Oracle.)
