heckerhut··on Why don't governments mind that companies are explicitly trying to make AGIs?
True. Now imagine those brains are not attached to people but to high bandwidth io. Ie Futurama.
heckerhut··on Why don't governments mind that companies are explicitly trying to make AGIs?
I think you’re on to something. You should explore that in an essay.

Well an NFT has way more utility than this thing. It makes you part of an online community. Naturally it has a different value.
heckerhut··on Aaron Swartz Rememberance Day This Monday
For sure it’s complex and there are branches of the multiverse where he was never confronted with that decision because he had no major crises. But in this universe he made that decision consciously and ultimately voluntarily.
heckerhut··on Neal Stephenson reacts to Facebook name change
Let’s see who will be proven right. I am fully committed to saving the climate etc but in my mind NFTs have absolutely nothing to do with that. NFTs are real and however we prevent climate change will not prevent the continued existence and rise of NFTs. I’m saying that with 0 skin in the NFT game in terms of investment. So take that as you will. Just don’t be such a dick on the internet. It’s not conducive to you or anyone learning anything and that’s what we’re all here for. Thanks.
heckerhut··on Aaron Swartz Rememberance Day This Monday
I think I could’ve been friends with Aaron, he seemed like such a great person. That he took his own life says something about his attitude towards it and it resonates with me. It’s a choice and there may be reasons why you are willing to commit to it. Of course I wish he hadn’t but I respect it.
heckerhut··on Neal Stephenson reacts to Facebook name change
By making it an NFT I think he creates something bigger than himself, something that could last generations. If he just gets a donation from FB, that would be some random amount of money…who cares.
heckerhut··on Neal Stephenson reacts to Facebook name change
He should auction an NFT and Zuck/FB/MVRS should buy it for a decent amount

The Strangest Man by Graham Farmelo is a great biography of Dirac. Wholly recommended.

> undemocratic lawlessness

What is that supposed to be? It’s not a known concept. If you think it means something you should define it.

As a lawyer, it’s perfectly legal to circumvent a law by designing around it. Crypto does that perfectly. So does everybody else. Heck, the whole open source movement does it.

This is super valuable for the audience it addresses. It’s well researched and easily understandable. This is money well spent. I wished everything that comes out of Europe would be so current.

heckerhut··on Nobody ever commented on the Polkadot chain here on Hacker News
Thank you for these two posts. Very informative and unbiased. People here simply don’t want to know. They have become what they despise in other people that are ignorant of certain technologies. There’s absolutely nothing you can do to change their mind. They will simply be surprised one day to find that every single interaction they have with money and finance is intermediated by a Blockchain. They will then accept it. But they will have missed out on being part of the adventure to build up the infrastructure. And that’s fine.
heckerhut··on Ether as a Computation Unit
Have you looked at DFINITY? It seems they want to get into that space.
heckerhut··on Bitcoin has few attributes of money but all the attributes of a collectible
The point everyone is trying to make is that because the bitcoins are technically not fungible they will, over time, also become practically not fungible due to, eg government intervention (AML, CO2, whatever). That is pretty much set in stone.
heckerhut··on Bitcoin has few attributes of money but all the attributes of a collectible
Not true even within the bitcoin specification itself. Look at how transaction fees are calculated. Older coins pay less fees than newer coins. They are not fungible. It’s one of bitcoins biggest weaknesses. Even Adam Back agrees with that (Google some older ltb episodes)
heckerhut··on Bitcoin has few attributes of money but all the attributes of a collectible
There’s something true to that.

It’s a thin line. I’ve been running a service a few years back that required KYC. Lots of people from African countries could not sign up for a lack of ID. In that respect it is a human right. But I agree with your double speak sentiment as well. It’s almost impossible not to be abused.

heckerhut··on Copyright infringement by German contact tracing app
Oh the irony. The LUCA app has been co-initiated and financed by Smudo [0], a famous German rapper. He was a supporter of Metallica suing Napster back in 2000 for copyright violation [1].

Recreating fiat in a fully decentralized system is huge. It’s indeed the driver behind DeFi. There’s no limit to what you can build with this.

Re NFT: what we’re seeing now is only the beginning. Is there hype? Sure. Is there a deeper underlying point though? You bet. NFT access control will come. But it’s not that crucial of a point as you seem to believe.
