headShrinker··on Apple's bright idea for CSAM scanning could start persecution on a global basis
There is big talk of a federal anti-trust against Apple. The rumors have been swirling for months. Apples CSAM initiative might be an attempt to cool things off at the justice department.

My iCloud is not accessible to all my friends, family, work associates, and the public. Facebook/Twitter/insta is. (Depending on your privacy settings)

Scanning publicly accessible material makes a lot of sense and is within the boundaries of section 230, tech companies are responsible for policing removing illegal or threatening material. For private or encrypted information, section 230 does not apply.

The purposes these services were designed for matters. iCloud is meant to be private, facebook would prefer everything you post is public as it’s built in to benefit their business model. Facebook should scan, iCloud shouldn’t. You are purposely obfuscating that detail.

headShrinker··on ImageNet contains naturally occurring Apple NeuralHash collisions
> By the time the FBI comes knocking for your devices, they have a lot of evidence, not a list of hash collisions.

Not necessarily. The FBI knocks on your door when they have convinced a warrant-signing judge, that’s there is probable-cause, or that additional information can be collected to build a case in which the defendant will ‘plead’ or make a deal for sentence reduction. 90% of defendants make a deal and never go to trial because by that time the stakes are so high a guilty verdict includes the harshest possible sentence.

FBI only needs to convince you they can win a case or the judge that there might be fruit behind a locked door, they don’t need direct evidence. It’s really up to the judge.

> people don’t care about that because you’re literally, voluntarily, giving Dropbox your files.

Correct and I agree. I don’t upload my most personal photos to Dropbox for this very specific reason. In fact I stopped using Dropbox when Condi Rice joined the board because she lacks good sense and doesn’t respect civil rights. See ‘The Patriot Act’ and ‘the Invasion of Afghanistan’. It was easy to stop using Dropbox because the alternatives were vast. Apple has me very purposely locked in to this scheme to where the alternatives are a huge transition and compromise on privacy no matter where I turn.

BO took a ton of money during the first round. Now the execs are pissed they weren’t awarded the contract. It seems BO just didn’t submit a compelling proposal and now they are using scorched earth behavior to get their way in court. It’s a shame because the BO team is being humiliated by the execs with their bullying antics. I have a huge amount of respect for the BO team. I KNOW they are really good and care a lot about the mission and space exploration. Too bad about the execs…

The government believes you might have information about a missing child and are withholding it. They are about to restrain you against your will and search your rectum without your consent.

The reason this violation was able to take place is because…

> It’s all an invasion of privacy until you’re sitting on the other side of the table

The thing about privacy and the government is you must always envision yourself on the wrong side of the table, because you are. Right up to the point they are inside you. [1] Your right to privacy is your strength and without it you are a slave to forces you don’t understand, can’t see, hear, taste, or smell.

Privacy or lack there of changes who you are and how you act. It changes what you say and why.

Be very careful how you submit to surveillance. The privacy you forfeit can never be recaptured.

> It’s all an invasion of privacy until you’re sitting on the other side of the table where you have a vested interest in getting access to the information.

That’s the thing about privacy that so many don’t want to admit. “Everyone deserves it, until they don’t”. All of society’s privacy is more important than your single child, sorry.

Meanwhile I created this great new technology. It runs in the background super efficiently on your phone. It immediately detects housefires and alerts you. It uses a combination of sensors to literally detect the spark of flame and there’s only one in 1 trillion false positives.

Simply download the app and give it permission to sample your microphones, cameras, accelerometers and historical gps data to build a profile, then flick a lighter anywhere in your house and sure enough your phone alarm goes off.

How it works is incredible, an algorithm listens for supersonic soundwaves created by the chemical reaction during combustion. Video and sound samples are then reviewed by one of our technical representatives.

Housefires and house fire deaths will be a thing of the past. The only compromise is that our algorithms listen to all of your video and audio and occasionally monitored by a human technician, which might include audio of you making love to your wife.

headShrinker··on Apple plans to scan US iPhones for child abuse imagery
> So this means it is checking if you are sharing known CP images?

No. NeuralMatch was “trained” using 200,000 CP images. “Neural“ is likely a reference to the perceptual matching that it uses. It is not a bit for bit match.

Perceptual matching is a technique used for categorizing images based on characteristics and content.

The algorithm will scan your library containing new information and compare it to what it understands as CP.

headShrinker··on Apple plans to scan US iPhones for child abuse imagery
There won’t be any collisions. It’s not a bit-for-bit Comparison. The algorithm uses machine learning to categorize images using perceptual match.

There will be many false positives, they will be reviewed by people. When there’s more than a few false positives, you will be investigated by the FBI.

headShrinker··on Apple plans to scan US iPhones for child abuse imagery
I’m pretty sure you don’t know what you’re talking about. Perceptual matching is not image matching.

Perceptual matching is used to sort categories of images. A quick DuckDuckGo will turn up many results. No stretch of the imagination will turn this into a bit for a bit comparison. This is a machine learning algorithm used to categorize images. https://www.ibm.com/blogs/research/2019/10/learning-implicit...

headShrinker··on Apple plans to scan US iPhones for child abuse imagery
You are wrong. It is not a numerical Hash of the exact image.

It is a perceptual Hash of the images characteristics and perceived continent by the algorithm, that’s the “neural” in neuralmatch.

Apple, for yours has been building-in machine learning dedicated chips into their builds so this shouldn’t affect battery life.

headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
> actively engaged in behaviors that are abhorrent to the church

This is bigotry plain and simple. It’s the ‘gayness’ the church has a problem with.

Saying 'If he had sex, he's immoral and should resign as priest and the religious order' is consciously or unconsciously issuing a homophobic attack because it was Grindr for gay sex with a man. If it was a man that had sex with an adult woman, no one would care, The Pillar wouldn't have publicized the data findings, this wouldn't be an article on arstechnica, and you wouldn't care either. Also Priesthood isn't a job you leave. It isn't a job, it's for life. There nothing to go to after.

It would be like saying ‘if you smoke pot, you are “actively engaged in behaviors that are abhorrent to the“… country because it’s listed as a Schedule I substance, federally banned, so you should leave and go to another country. No I won’t. Will stay here smoke my pot, thumb my nose at you and change the laws. And we did, we’ll change the church too.

headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
You go back & forth defending then attacking the church then the priest. I really don't understand your issue. I'm clear, I have issue with the churches 1: priest obstinance policy and 2: gay policy; it's unrealistic with a catastrophically negative outcome.

I have a problem with people attacking gays or straights for wanting love. I don't care what your religion or organization is.

I grew up in the church. I have friends in the church. I know a lot of priests and I knew a lot of gay priests. There are a lot of good people there.

If none of that was good enough to change your tack, you will N E V E R defeat the church, and people need/want it. The're the single biggest land real-estate owners in the world with 1.3 billion baptised Catholics worldwide as of 2019. Money is power and this scandal will blow over, they are on a long-term plan. You can help the church evolve to a kinder organization; kinder to its priests and its parishioners.

Personally, I don't like church, it's not for me. Deep down everyone knows right and wrong, and existence a god doesn't help answer any questions I have. The idea of heaven allows people to think there is something better after. There isn't.

headShrinker··on Why 'I Have Nothing to Hide' Is the Wrong Way to Think About Surveillance (2013)
> TL;DR: "if I have nothing to hide I have nothing to fear" is absolutely a correct observation

False. You’ll fear losing privacy and freedom to speak freely even if you have nothing to hide. We have seen this effect in real-time as governments began “secretly” monitoring communication in 2006 and even more so as tech companies started banning speech. You will self-censor even when you have nothing to hide.

Privacy is like the bathroom door. We close it even though everyone knows what we are doing. It’s not a secret.

It’s like the freedom to speak even if you have nothing to say.

You wouldn’t use a public bathroom stall that didn’t have a door. You would be plenty angry and confused if I started arbitrarily dictating what you could and couldn’t say.

You have plenty to fear even when you have nothing to hide.

Privacy should not be confused with secrecy. These two are often conflated by those who wish to compromise your privacy.

I really don’t know how much more clear I need to be with you.

Vatican bars gay union blessing, says God ‘can’t bless sin’ https://apnews.com/article/vatican-decree-same-sex-unions-ca... This is from March 2021…

You seem to be talking out of both sides your mouth. You are continuously wrong and willful in not acknowledging it.

Just to be clear I speak from experience when I talk about the church. My uncle was in the seminary, my other uncle is a catholic priest, my father was in the seminary, my best friend is a devout Catholic who’s been going to church every day for the past 60 years. I know church doctrine. I don’t think you do

I’ve met all the nice catholic people you describe. I’ve also met the not so nice people you pretend aren’t a large influential part of the Catholic Church. Maybe your state is a wonderland. Travel a bit and see the rest of the world and know what it actually looks like when you are gay

headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
Sorry. I did not assert that the church considers being a gay a sin. I insist that the church has consistently been against gays and it would be out of character for them to be different. You confirmed this with your comment
headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr

“ It's more like the Catholic church only wants virgins and people who can't be proven otherwise as priests right now.”

But let’s be honest it’s unspoken that they prefer straight virgins right?

Actually it’s spoken. Quite verbose in fact. The church is constantly attacking gays and for them to be non-bias in this case is completely out of character and you are giving them way too much courtesy.

headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
He knows that and is alluded to the fact that the article mentions the gay bar to taint his character and create a narrative that he is lurking on the down low.

Many people go to gay bars not to hook up, but to be around other gay people. Gay bars are not a hookup app.

headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
And hopefully you don’t have sex with children. Though we don’t have any evidence to indicate that you don’t… so you are suspect. Hopefully you only engage in sex acts with consenting adults
headShrinker··on Catholic priest quits after “anonymized” data revealed alleged use of Grindr
“ makes me wonder if I should feel bad for him. I don't, because my gut reaction is that he…”

You don’t know him and you can’t claim to know what he thinks or believes. No one follows the catholic theology to absolutely strict adherence. Just some are more strict about some aspects. You accusing him of having no faith or belief in the religion he has dedicated his life to is offensive. Your quick judgement is probably because he’s gay… and religious, thus a hypocrite, in some peoples eyes. Just remember it’s the Church that turned away from gays not the other way around.

Having to abstain from physical contact with another adult human is a deeply unnatural and inhuman protocol. I don’t judge any one for wanting to touched and loved.

As for your quick and abrasive judgement: A group of men preparing to stone an adulterous woman to death were addressed by Jesus with the words: ‘He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her’ (John 8:7).

headShrinker··on What it's like to be cancelled
I can relate on a small scale. People feed on chaos. Their evening primetime dramas aren't enough to sustain them so it spills out on twitter. No amount of apology or understanding will stop them because if they accept the conclusion, their favorite reality show ends with a thud.

I got canceled in the group I founded. 12 years ago I started a reddit community based on my relationships and attractions. After building to 28k subs 10 years later, fb groups and meetups around the country. Animosity toward leadership and mods began to form. A small group of users formed resistance and started a scuffle in a post, then threats toward meetup attendees directed at mods started appearing on the discord. Complaints started appearing on the facebook group. There was no reasoning or logic to their complaints and they almost seemed incorrigible... like a bloodlust. In the end, I was forced out and exiled. I would later learn that the resistance was mostly unstable crazed users who fed on drama. Since the event their reddit and facebook profiles document a life in chaos for each of them.

It's weird not being able to speak in a community you designed and built over a decade. Even as your face/likeness and artwork is still in use in all the published materials. Thankfully things have mostly calmed down now.

headShrinker··on The rich shouldn’t feel like the enemy’: Is New York turning on the wealthy?
Which is exactly what they did, and is how we ended up here.

Yes the game is afoot. Everyone is hedging. I’ve lived in the city for 12 years now and even in that short time I’ve watched it change. The value of these company’s stonks have sky rocketed and that translates in to people on the ground and buildings in the air, in my city as well as others. We know what Amazon did to the Seattle real-estate markets and the culture. Well they (FAANG) did it to NYC too. There were other biggggg problems before but this feels like people are upset, maybe as you point out at the wrong target.

A ridiculous amount of the apartments go unoccupied because they are someone’s pietaterre or just an investment asset. That to me is insulting and am a little bitter that they benefit, cause rent prices to sky rocket and yet don’t even live here and barely visit.

I have watched the culture; food, art and music scene die here as the rich buy convert and transform everything in to their playground; Hudson Yard, and Avenue of the worlds school where tuition for kindergarten is $60,000. The restaurants are worse yet more pretentious and more expensive than ever. Many business store fronts go unoccupied, because the asking price is too high yet the landlords never drop the rent, because they don’t have to. The building is an investment asset. So premium storefront goes unused and papered over for years and in some cases, decades.

The rich maybe aren’t the problem but they seem to be causing a lot of problems...

Edit: to be clear, I live in one of the neighborhoods that is actively being “gentrified” after it was already gentrified in the 90s so I have a front row view to all this development.

headShrinker··on What I learnt shopping for decent computer speakers
An audiophile would spend more than $25k on a pre-amp, amp, and two speakers. A single speaker cable might cost more than $1000. $300 headphones are vastly better than $30 pair. That is a difference an untrained ear can hear. However they don’t even scratch the surface of high-headphones much less something an audiophile would purchase. A pro level reference headphone might be in the range of 2 or 3k. Pros can hear the difference and properly identify characteristics. A 10k or 15k headphone? Many would conclude that the unbelievable pricing of some ultra expensive audio is snake oil because claims are subjective/unsubstantiated and the science behind them are flimsy or nonexistent.
