hbossy··on The coming tsunami of fakery
The word robot derives from the Slavonic word robota, roughly translating to servitude, forced labor, or drudgery.

No it doesn't. It just a word for work or job, without negative connotations.

hbossy··on “Science must respect the dignity and rights of all humans”
„If the facts don't fit the theory, change the facts.“
hbossy··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
It's just cheaper to design and certificate one part and put it on multiple models than making dedicated analog controls for every new design. Touchscreens are just cost cutting measure. I wonder how many people died fiddling with car radios so one pencil pusher could get a bonus for skimming $10 off manufacturing cost.
hbossy··on GM makes $1,500 subscription mandatory on GMC, Buick, Cadillac Models
Stickers in Europe show both pre and post-tax prices. Online sales just charge you with the tax of their origin country. Anyway difficulty to advertise is no reason to not show real prices on in-store stickers.
hbossy··on GM makes $1,500 subscription mandatory on GMC, Buick, Cadillac Models
How many roads with no passersby still have cell coverage? How many of them allow for speeds great enough to knock you unconscious on impact?
hbossy··on Dotfiles being hidden is a UNIXv2 mistake (2012)
I like my terminals a little bit cleaner:

    printf '\033c'; while true; do echo -en " $(date)\r"; sleep 1; done
hbossy··on Retirement of Amazon MOBI eBook file format
That's too bad. I used it a lot to produce epub fitting on my old Sony PRS-300. It couldn't parse pirated epubs with tables of contents, diacritical signs and illustrations, so it was easier to download mobi and convert it in Calibre to epub. It worked nine times out of ten, compared to maybe 10% with epub->epub conversion.
hbossy··on Future trains could provide carbon capture
There's more trees in Europe than in roman times.
hbossy··on How a cooling vest invented by a furry made it's way into the US military (2019)
I wonder how we went all the way back to every solider wearing plate armor like it's 1500 again.
hbossy··on Wikipedia has blocked editing ‘recession’ as people change definition
It's more reasonable to assume that all politicians lie the same and "fact checkers" are biased against one party.
hbossy··on Has the world become less colourful?
Quick check on Volkswagen site tells me that changing default silver to red on new Polo increases the price by about $656. That's just about the minimal wage where I live.
hbossy··on Google Launches Carbon, an Experimental Replacement for C++
I would argue that convenience of users is more important than easy of parsing.
hbossy··on Google Launches Carbon, an Experimental Replacement for C++
That's only true because they used build-in int type. Why would I prefer to use: var inst : MyClass; over MyClass inst;
hbossy··on Google Launches Carbon, an Experimental Replacement for C++

    var r : i32;
How is this any better than

    int32_t r;
? all I see is additional, unnecessary keyword to type.
hbossy··on Excel: Getting rid of everything except numbers
Switch to R1C1 Notation. It makes a lot of Excel magic easier to understand.
hbossy··on Looming natural gas shortages has the EU scrambling for solutions
Renewables were never an alternative to gas. They can supplement it but not completely replace it. They are simply not stable enough. Maybe except for hydroelectricity. Meanwhile they did everything they could to prevent any development of new nuclear projects.
hbossy··on My business card runs Linux
Next goal: business card with edge HDMI connector, so you don't need to compromise your computer security.
hbossy··on Schroedinger's streaming service just died
>But how do I prove I own an MP3 file? It's not your job to prove you own something but their to prove you stole it.
hbossy··on Webcams aren't good enough
I don't _want_ a good webcam. There's really no need for my colleagues to be able to count freckles on my nose. All I want others to see is my general contour and expression on my face. In fact I wouldn't use it at all if it weren't mandated by company policy and no one used one until after HR drones started complaining about it. We had one guy join the weekly call with some crystal-clear, HD cam once and entire office started joking about his alleged "online side gig".
hbossy··on USB-C hubs and my slow descent into madness (2021)
I just checked the official Thinkpad USB-C dock model 40a9 and it's using the same rtl8153b chip.
