hboon··on Show HN: Bluesky Analytics
I started building this a few months ago and have iterated quite a bit. Want to know your feedback. Login (free) with Bluesky account after you create an app-specific password at https://bsky.app/settings/app-passwords.

(Initially scheduled posting was only for Bluesky, but I've recently added cross-posting to X because cross-posting seems the way to go and I wanted to try that hypothesis out).

Chain of trust (i.e like HTTPS certs). You'll have to have trusted oracles any way for blockchains. No way around that.

hboon··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
I'm building and running a Bluesky analytics and post scheduler site, with a couple of tools on top. The network is showing good growth and promise at 33M users at the moment so I'm optimistic about it.

If it doesn't cost much (time/money) to change, TypeScript everything.

Tell the doctor/optician what you are going to use it for (distance, long hours, environment) and the least they can do is to test the comfort level to match it correctly.
hboon··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2025)
I have been building https://theblue.social which provides analytics and post scheduling for Bluesky along with a little side-tools for following-back followers and cleaning your followings.

Been on this the last few months. Have worked on a few other ideas before that but those didn't fly.

hboon··on Ask HN: Is there an equivalent of Cursor for Vim?
Aider, open source. It's not a vim plugin, but I use it with Neovim.

This particular feature which lets you write instructions/notes as code comments is most relevant https://aider.chat/docs/usage/watch.html

hboon··on Evo: Version control that works the way you think
Darcs was also very very slow when I used it.
hboon··on Aider in Your IDE
I have been using Aider for a while but not Cline. It looks like Cline has more functionality but I am have been pretty satisfied with Aider. I like the simplicity. I use Neovim instead of VS Code, so couldn't quite get into Cursor.

You originally/usually run Aider from the cli, but with this new feature, you can insert instructions and notes into the code as comments which will be acted on. This is similar to Cursor's select code+Cmd K.

hboon··on How to use Postgres for everything
Not the answer you were looking for, but I had been shopping recently for slightly overlapping reasons (I want to ship projects, but they are all smaller MVPs that might run for a while and I didn't want to pay for 1 database service for each one on Render).

I found https://www.thenile.dev/pricing which supports which apparently supports unlimited databases.

hboon··on Show HN: Void, an open-source Cursor/GitHub Copilot alternative
Yeah, my first thought is the plugins are going away sooner or later.

I hope they use Jetbrains as a base instead of VS Code (or roll their own). I strongly prefer IdeaVim or over the one in VS Code. It's the main reason why I don't use Cursor.

hboon··on Show HN: Void, an open-source Cursor/GitHub Copilot alternative
They have announced they are building an editor; so while I'm a subscriber, I'm not sure how long the plugins will last

I thought they have a little indicator that says it's a partial result set?

> I'm pretty sure ONE of these five hundred 'run' functions

Yes. Same thing with all unannotated dynamic languages. Like Smalltalk has a bazillion `#value` and `#value:`s, but there were options to scope it down. You can do that in RubyMine, but I forgot if you can do it by class/gems without manually creating a scope.

Just saying that such navigation isn't impossible with Ruby.

hboon··on Mastering Ruby Code Navigation: Ruby LSP Enhancements in the First Half of 2024
I'm aware of the limitations of a dynamic language in terms of the looking up references and implementations of types/functions.

For everyone commenting about those and who haven't, I suggest trying RubyMine to set expectations on what is possible first.

hboon··on Show HN: Haystack – an IDE for exploring and editing code on an infinite canvas
You don't have to get rid of files; while the Smalltalk image was great and offer some advantages, there has been Smalltalks that worked on files and Lisp showed that you can have still have a working image with files.

> navigation to/from callers was not possible in Smalltalk

You can navigate implementations and references to symbols, which mostly work like how unannotated dynamic languages (like Ruby, Python) would work.

There would be false positives; but it isn't as bad as it sounds unless you look up common symbols like `#value` and `#value:`.

In some Smalltalk environments and some extensions, you could narrow them by scope, like look up references to this symbol within that package. I think Dolphin did that.

hboon··on Show HN: Haystack – an IDE for exploring and editing code on an infinite canvas
I tried finding a screenshot which showed what I was thinking. But gosh it's so hard. Here's one, but really low quality https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2F....

I have always opened multiple windows/panes of source code at the same time out of habit. It's a great paradigm.

Haystack looks good. Thanks for sharing.

Is it partly inspired by Smalltalk browsers?
