hb3b··on Martin Shkreli has been sentenced to seven years in prison
His video series on investing and chemistry are like an adult version of Khan Academy. Martin literally sat on-air for weeks on end with a Chemistry textbook and went chapter-by-chapter explaining each topic in pretty good detail.

hb3b··on Martin Shkreli has been sentenced to seven years in prison
Cruel and unusual given the crime. Half the sentence of Jeffrey Skilling who destroyed thousands of families. No question in my mind that the judge had it out for him from the get-go.
hb3b··on 23andMe Granted FDA Authorization for Genetic Test on Cancer Risk
Flatiron Health was just acquired by Roche for 2 billion dollars. A few years ago Flatiron purchased a company called Altos Systems and as a net result acquired an EMR and patient data for 20%+ of cancer patients in the US. A major part of Flatiron's business was de-identifying patient data and flipping it to pharma companies. They do contribute to some FDA studies and submit papers here-and-there, but the largest sources of income are the EMR and pharma, pharma, pharma.

Are you really comfortable with one company owning so many parts of patient care? I'm not.

hb3b··on The metrics behind Spotify’s IPO
The statistics point towards users wanting music from the big four labels. This may be one of the reasons they have double downed recently on their discovery products. If they can continue to divert user interest to artists from less expensive labels, it's a win/win. (Former Spotify employee, have no idea what I'm talking about).
hb3b··on What Managers Need to Know About Slack, Yammer, and Chatter
They're not. They promote knee-jerk reactions and just-in-time decision making. I see some value in Slack interactive message buttons for BPM approvals but that's about it. Don't get me started on Chatops.
hb3b··on I got my iPhone’s battery replaced, and I’m angry Apple didn’t tell me to sooner
I would hope that it gets done sooner than later. Had a 6S with a serial from a bad batch and sent it to Apple for repair/replacement. They refused to fix it citing "3rd party modifications" with no further explanation or evidence. It wasn't until I escalated the issue up 3 levels and provided photos of the phone in stellar condition at the time of shipping did they finally back down. The experience bothered me so much that I switched to Android. Your post made me realize that perhaps engineers are so overwhelmed with 6S repairs that they are just declining them.
hb3b··on Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon 5th Gen Laptop Recall

Q9. How did you discover this problem?
Lenovo has received three customer reports worldwide of
overheating which resulted in damage to the PC. Lenovo has
received no reports of damage to persons or property, other
  than to the laptop PCs.
There is something missing here. Three people reported that their machines overheated and Lenovo went all-in on a lab investigation and CPSC recall?
hb3b··on How I sold my stock options
Can anyone advise on which documents would be worth requesting under Delaware company shareholder rights to help assess stock value?
hb3b··on How Atlassian Built a $10B Growth Engine
I came for this comment. The big difference between JIRA and SAP is that SAP is a "batteries-included + kitchen sink" package (which tends to require molding business processes around it). My problem w/ JIRA is that anything beyond the simplest workflows/BPM requires purchasing a ton of paid plugins that tend to be abandoned over time. Atlassian knows what users want but they are dog-slow at bringing them to fruition.
hb3b··on Amazon Will Resume Selling Apple TV, Google's Chromecast
That's right and I can't believe there isn't more disgust at Google for the Echo Show drama. They blocked Youtube.com on this device -- the website, not an app. It's the most recent example of throwing net neutrality out the window.
hb3b··on Apple Buys Shazam to Boost Apple Music
A castle in the sky valuation, maybe?
hb3b··on AT&T wants you to forget that it blocked FaceTime over cellular in 2012
And no one blamed Apple for giving in to AT&T’s demands for this and for ensuring customers paid extra for a personal hotspot charge.
hb3b··on Reprogramming a $13 consumer wifi-enabled outlet
Except in the US as this frequency is used for amateur radio.
hb3b··on You’re working in the wrong place if you’re working in an open office
Peopleware debunked the myth that open office plans raise employee productivity. It should be required reading for all startup office managers. If there is a common struggle amongst employees with noise, demand a quiet room/area and a headphones subsidy.
hb3b··on Ask HN: Which programmer do you look up to?
I came here looking for Fabrice to be mentioned.

hb3b··on Elon Musk, Zuckerberg Trade Barbs Over Artificial Intelligence
Elon's tweet: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/889743782387761152
hb3b··on How CircleCI Processes 4.5M Builds per Month
A provision they have never enforced.

On the topic of QA testing/automation, it really kills me that Apple servers won't sign older iOS releases which means QA teams need to protect stock devices from accidental upgrades. The AWS Device Farm iOS devices are all jailbroken.

hb3b··on Basecamp Employee Handbook
Puppet/Salt/Chef.
hb3b··on Windows as a service? Now, there’s an argument for Linux
And of course in typical Azure fashion this service requires an enterprise agreement, can't be tested using free credits, and requires a 12 seat up-front commitment. I'm interested to know if anyone knows of a cheaper service than this or AWS Workspaces from a reputable provider.
