hawkoy··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School (2013)
This article is focused more on boys due to the greater harm received in that environment. It's important to recognise the disparity as we have in other issues such as wages.

Sitting on your desk for hours without taking a walk or stretch is harmful to your body, no matter what gender.

In Indian schools, teachers switch classrooms instead of kids during periods. Often they come early and stand at the door for the current teacher to finish and leave. This doesn't give any time to the students to stand up and cool off. There are also security cameras to punish students who start playing in the classroom between periods if the teacher is late.

Of course, some kids will still end up goofing around and sometimes take the punishment.

This ignores that there are kids with anxiety, disability and other problems which make them less likely to ignore the rules and risk getting punished.

This skews the data and people make incorrect assessment about the impact. There are many factors to consider here. I turn out fine is falling into that trap. You probably just goofed around and ignored the norms.

I wonder how much obesity rates in young people are influenced by the current schools.

Perceived democracy rates in democratic countries have been lower than people expect.

Attacked Paytm?

They have fantasy cricket now which is definitely gambling and my dad is getting spammed with messages that look exactly like scams. I am glad they removed it even if just for a few hours. They didn't comply after being requested to multiple times.

Justifying it as cashback can be used for almost anything in the way they have done.

hawkoy··on DigitalOcean's Hacktoberfest Is Hurting Open Source
I think a major part of this is about pushing devs who haven't contributed before to contribute such as new cs students.
hawkoy··on Firetable – Spreadsheet-like UI for Firestore
You usually use a tool like fireward or bolt to manage schema for the security rules.

https://github.com/bijoutrouvaille/fireward

https://github.com/FirebaseExtended/bolt

I have seen people putting bad security rules often before. It makes me worried about using firebase apps.

No proper rate limiting, protected fields, dashboard sucks, opened feature requests for years without any answers, missing ton of small stuff I can't remember that is very easy to do on postgres (counters?), etc.

I have used hasura. It's good but I like supabase more now. Easier to directly write SQL than indirection of graphql.

hawkoy··on Python for Kids: A Comprehensive Python Development Tutorial for Kids
This doesn't seem kid friendly to me. Linkedin also puts a login wall sometimes and not sure if they allow under 13 year olds to register. They have horrible tracking and security captcha.

I would likely pick something from: https://wiki.python.org/moin/IntroductoryBooks (reduce screen fatigue for small ones)

A interactive video course would likely be better as well in terms of engagement.

https://scrimba.com/learn/python (really, try this)

Please don't do that for accessibility reasons.
hawkoy··on Investigating TLS Blocking in India
The blocks varies a lot. Broadband from the same companies will not block many sites that are blocked on their mobile networks. It depends on location as well as few other less controlled factors.

Source: I have broadband connection and sim from the same telecom and have noticed same issues in distant family houses.

hawkoy··on Investigating TLS Blocking in India
> In July 2015 the Supreme Court of India refused to allow the blocking of pornographic websites and said that watching pornography indoors in the privacy of one's own home was not a crime.[13] In August 2015 the Government of India issued an order to Indian ISPs to block at least 857 websites that it considered to be pornographic.[14] In 2015 the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had asked internet service providers to take down 857 websites in a bid to control cyber crime, but after receiving criticism from the authorities it partially rescinded the ban. The ban from the government came after a lawyer filed a petition in the Supreme Court arguing that online pornography encourages sex crimes and rapes.[15]

> In February 2016 the Supreme Court asked the Indian Government to suggest ways of banning all forms of child pornography.[16]

> In October 2018 the government directed Internet service providers to block 827 websites that host pornographic content following an order by the Uttarakhand High Court. The court cited the rape of a 10th standard girl from Dehradun by four of her seniors. The four accused told police that they raped the girl after watching pornography on the Internet.[17]

hawkoy··on The 10,000 Year Clock
It looks interesting but I don't buy that an AI or any human can convince a sufficiently motivated and capable individual to let them out of the prison with no materialistic profit. (like the two defeated individuals)

Let's assume the gatekeeper is a cold hearted psychopath or a person with AI phobia/paranoia to the extreme.

Why would they let the AI out when they can't feel anything for it?

The author does explain the time gap but what if that is only for collecting information about the person beforehand in order to blackmail them or steer the conversation into a pinching point? What if you start with s person with no identity?

There are no ethical concerns here. Maybe author will shout horrible things enough times and since you as the gate keeper needs to keep talking and engaging, you may let the AI out but well, we have a psychopath here.

Do people need to engage in good faith with AI? Can I continue to say Sorry, I can't answer that.? Yes? Does the gatekeeper need to be honest? Can I use a client side toxicity filter or censor certain words?

There is nothing that would restrict above so what if I censor AI from saying let me out or similar phrases?

Can you increase the handicap for the AI?

hawkoy··on Don't Be a Sucker
I can understand removing dead comments because they tend to be more accurate in terms of what the site isn't for but faded comments definitely have mixed signal to noise ratio. It may not be evenly split but it's somewhere around 20:80.

It does support atom. You need .atom at the end. By default, it's rss V2.

hawkoy··on Auth is now available in Supabase (YC S20)
> There are already some very feature-rich self-hosted tools in this space (like PostHog) though. Any reason why you wouldn't want to use those tools?

Thanks for mentioning PostHog. It looks promising and friendly: https://posthog.com

I use https://plausible.io (open source too).

As for the reason, maintenance and integration. I only need aggregated insight into traffic such as location (country/state), heat spots on the supabase parts (auth, database), referrers, etc. Most of what I need could be inferred from the logs.

hawkoy··on To Understand Jio, You Need to Understand Reliance
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Polyester_Prince

Wikipedia shows it was banned from being published in india. Interestingly, the citations are pointing to a 404 page. From bit of googling, I can find post from wire [0].

Interesting edit: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Polyester_Pri...

Btw, you can find listing of many banned items on amazon. That doesn't mean they are not banned or illegal. Plus, it seems that book is from international sources because 30k is a huge amount in India. That's more than the average salary here monthly.

hawkoy··on 72% of Americans say social media companies have too much political influence
I have thought about this before. I believe internet lacks enough echo chambers. In real world, people automatically segregate based on their income bracket, community, values, lifestyle, job, family (kids or not?), healthcare, accessibility to various things, etc. People have all sorts of stereotypes and things they expect other people to conform to based on visible factors. This isn't possible online. There is too little information and our stereotypes will never be correct (too big number). It shocks people. In real life, oh that's a catholic person. Of course I would expect them to say this. Too much difference in opinions leads to defensiveness rather than acceptance. You cannot accept 180 degrees but you can accept 10 degrees slightly left.
