It's perhaps more accurate to say sugars and simple carbs are easy to absorb whereas fats and complex carbs are harder to absorb. A single gram fat is the most calorie dense substance by weight that we can consume I think. It's just in practice it's hard to become fat by consuming only excess fat.

I have had to implement it but still I wouldn't use it directly for an interview.
hawk_··on The Basque Country’s Mondragón Corporation is the largest industrial co-op
> instead of dreaming of us all dining endlessly on the the fat of the C-suite.

I thought the issue with such high/concentrated C-suite compensation isn't the envy (though that may be the case for some). The issue is that just by squeezing $116 per employee such a CEO can pay herself. Like if removing armrests from all employee chairs nets you a few additional millions of dollars, the temptation to do so exists.

If there was no such C-suite, there would be less incentives for pennypinching over basic employee wellbeing.

What? really? Do they change your pricing plan? How can they charge more for the same usage?

hawk_··on Writing scalable backends in UDP
> latency trumps reliability

Let's say I don't care about the initial handshake latency, have disabled nagle and have no packet loss. Is there still a measurable latency difference between UDP and TCP? It would appear that there is (based on yours and other comments) - but I don't know why.

hawk_··on Proton Mail says Outlook for Windows is Microsoft's new data collection service
Yes this is truly annoying part of modern tech. They used to say if you don't pay for it, you are the product. Now even if you pay for it you are still the product because they can do whatever they want with your data anyway.
hawk_··on Garbage collection for systems programmers (2023)
Yes - but it's quite consistent. If it was 'noise' it wouldn't be.
hawk_··on Garbage collection for systems programmers (2023)
Strangely in our workloads we have noticed generational ZGC latencies are better than G1 at ~99th-99.9th percentile or below but worse at percentiles above that. The allocation rate is moderate.

Wonder if there is a good term for this. I have been jokingly referring to this as 'headed' and headless as 'beheaded'.

> If you want explicitness and reproducibility please don't reach for Docker

Is it common in C++ builds to rely on the current O/S libraries instead of say making most dependencies explicit, close to full cross-compile? Do dependencies need to be pulled in using apt-get and not something like maven?

hawk_··on YC: Requests for Startups
> In weeks we can develop and roll out features & functionality that our clients just lap up that you would never in a million years build into an ERP platform

Interesting. Just to make sure I understood this correctly, are you taking of a purpose built app/software for each such 'request' as opposed to this being some 'module'/'add-on' in an ERP suite?

hawk_··on What it was like working for Gitlab
But people don't choose to be rich or poor exactly either. As a general rule, discrimination is around things for which there's no choice. Having a choice over where they live or whether they are rich doesn't mean it's easy or practical. But that can't make it grounds for discrimination, even if unfair.
hawk_··on What it was like working for Gitlab
Discrimination is around things that an individual can't choose (religion being the weird elephant in the room). Fair or not, this isn't discrimination.

hawk_··on Ask HN: As a first-time solopreneur how would you go about hiring the first team
> So for instance try doing marketing yourself for a month.

People who try coding for a month and based on that try to hire a programmer make terrible clients/managers. I am not sure this advice would apply to anything that has even a little depth/nuance.

hawk_··on Appending to an std:string character-by-character: how does the capacity grow?
Surely that must be a specific allocator. Does rust allow you to use say jemalloc or alternatives? Or are you saying this lock is acquired no matter which allocator is used?
