harywilke··on As self-driving cars come to more states, regulators take a back seat
I don't see any backlash at all for the ~90 people that were killed today in the US in motor vehicles [1]. I doubt there will be a massive backlash, unless the vehicles were operating in a known dangerous setup. These vehicles are filled with loads of sensors so accident reconstruction will be trivial.

REYES (Render Everything You've Ever Seen) has been the basis of PRMan since the start. Recently PRMan has shifted away from this approach and towards more ray tracing. see the following for descriptions of REYES: http://renderman.pixar.com/view/reyes-renderman-under-the-ho... or the 1987 paper by Cook, Carpenter and Catmul http://graphics.pixar.com/library/Reyes/paper.pdf

cool photos. Every time I see an article about cables like this on HN i think of the Mother Board Mother Earth article by Neil Stephenson. Worth the time if you haven't read it. http://archive.wired.com/wired/archive/4.12/ffglass.html
harywilke··on Greece debt crisis: ECB 'to end' bank emergency lending
The alternative is to start investing in Greece. To build up it's economy so we can end the Greek Depression. As it stands now the austerity packages have cut 30% off of the economy and increased the unemployment rates to nearly 30%, 50% of the youth. Those are Great Depression size numbers. Hard to collect taxes when people are not working. All these bailouts are basically just the Troika hand wringing about giving money to themselves while the country they are helping is bled dry. To date the IMF have made about 2.5 Billion, Germany profited to the tune of 100 Billion.

harywilke··on Calling the Oregon Lottery's Bluff After Poker Machine Dealt a Strange Hand
From the article: 'The lottery’s rules require “a close approximation of the odds of winning some prize for each game” and say those odds “must be displayed on a Video Lottery game terminal screen.”'

Curzi discovered that the odds displayed were not correct and the commission knew about it.

harywilke··on Why reading a book 100 times is a great idea
You change. You gain perspective. You focus on different bits. And you miss things the first time round. Take the Iliad. A young kid might love the gory tongue-splitting spear through the head of the enemy fighting scenes of the Iliad. Later on in life you might dwell on the fact that a good chunk of the story is dedicated to humanizing Hector, the hero of the enemy. Showing us his concern about the fate of his wife and children if Troy does, in the end, get sacked. then again, i can't get my wife to watch or read something twice ever.
harywilke··on I Am Releasing Ten Million Passwords
The buck stops where the Supreme Court says it does. They are the ones who get to decide the meaning of the words in laws and the Constitution. As a side note, the first amendment does not bind the states from creating laws that limit speech as it is written that 'Congress shall make no law...'. This comes from the Doctrine of Incorporation[1] based off of precedents set by interpretations of the Fourteenth Amendment. Now there's an amendment with an interesting history. I'm not sure that Google Trends is a valid metric for this conclusion. It shows both Windows and MacOS X have declining trends as well. Apparently iOS is doing gangbusters in Cambodia and Android is all the rage in Indonesia.

i watched a docu on the large hadron collider and the search for the higgs boson particle where they asked one of the scientists a similar question. what do you expect to gain monitarily from that xBillion dollars we just spent on this? his reply was 'i don't know'. he went on to give the example of how when radio waves were first discovered nobody called them 'radio waves' because no one had thought to use them in that way yet. I think a lot of exploritory science can be framed this way. we do it to get a better understanding of the world we live in.

Apple has had a very long history of absorbing user hacks/extensions into its OS. Pre OSX there were lots if extensions that were bought out or blatantly ripped off that made it into the core of the OS. I'm a bit surprised it's taken them so long on this. I'm a bit surprised that some of the features of XtraFinder haven't been absorbed. Auto adjusting finder column widths are a huge pluses for me

harywilke··on Rise of the American Professional Sports Cartel
Because the Miami heat and the San Antonio Spurs were such great teams back in the 80's and 90's? From Wikipedia: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NBA_franchise_post-se... "Of the 30 current NBA franchises, 13 have never won the NBA championship. The oldest such franchise is the Suns (46 seasons), while the Royals/Kings and the Hawks have even longer championship droughts (63 and 56 seasons, respectively). Only 7 franchises have never been to the NBA Finals, the oldest of which is the Braves/Clippers (44 seasons), and again the Kings and the Hawks have appearance droughts that are even longer (63 and 56 seasons, respectively). The longest a franchise has gone without appearing in the playoffs at all is 15 seasons: the Braves/Clippers franchise from 1977 to 1991."

Only 7 teams have not been to the finals. That's not awful.

For all the crap they do, they still deliver a better end product to the fans than what we have here in Greek football. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_league. Just look at the statistics section. Why bother being a sports fan if the outcome is so easily predicted? Parity between teams should be the goal of all league head offices.
