Sexually fulfilled?
harry8··on 20 years of Git
Every single action, including Telnet, including typing help, the nc command, was suggested by the audience with Tridgell prompting with a minimal “how are we going to find out…”

A bk client was hacked by the audience in 2 minutes.

It was the most devastating take down I’ve ever seen of the attacks. Linus later said the “git” wasn’t Tridgell at all, but in fact Linus himself.

I think that was the only lca Linus missed for a few years either side.

harry8··on Rsync replaced with openrsync on macOS Sequoia
> So for iOS, it’s pretty obvious why they don’t use gplv3… because it would violate the terms.

Apple using "openrsync" because they want to close the code more than the rsync license lets them.

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
The government threatening legislation unless a company censors in line with the government's wishes is wrong and a violation of the 1st am.

Your excuses & justifications, maga's, no different when it comes to the health of the 1st am.

"Because it's THEM, they're worse! They're the baddies! You can't compare this evil thing to their evil thing which is so much worse!"

FIRE have non-partisan credibility. Maybe see what they think.

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
One example of plenty.

https://twitterfiles.substack.com/p/how-twitter-let-the-inte...

From no. 20 but you should really read all of it. The cynic in me expects the goalposts to move and more smear.

20. “Were Twitter a contractor for the FSB… they could not have built a more effective disinformation platform,” Johns Hopkins Professor (and Intel Committee “expert”) Thomas Rid told Politico.

"Were Twitter a contractor for the FSB," the Russian intelligence agency involved in the 2016 campaign to meddle in the US election Rid Said, "They could not have built a more effective disinformation platform."

21. As congress threatened costly legislation, and Twitter began was subject to more bad press fueled by the committees, the company changed its tune about the smallness of its Russia problem.

Republican partisan's probably see it as treason. Democrats partisans pretend it's a "nothingburger." Everyone else who notices is getting despondent which is probably just as bad.

FIRE, Greenwald, Taibbi have stood and continue to stand on principle not partisan and will get relentlessly smeared with insane lies because of it.

edit: sidenote. For me the google search "twitter files taibbi" without quotes returned Tabbi's publication racket on page 4. From there I could get the twitter files separate publication. That seems like a very bad search fail. I wonder why it is like that.

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
The government successfully threatens a private company to make then censor.

Is that ok? Not for them.

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
That is false.
harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
You don’t stand on principle don’t expect the principle to stand.

No it’s them it’s always them…

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
What about we stand on _principle_. What about we criticise and oppose /all/ transgressions of that principle. What about we all do it more loudly for whatever tribe we have some loose membership of and don't excuse it because it is politically expedient.

That's whataboutism nowadays.

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
> refusing the FBI and then suffering no consequences

The whole thing was clearly just a partisan smear job in your eyes. Precisely the same reaction as the views of current maga types about the current first am disasters.

It's worth revisiting /precisely/ in relation to fighting the current assault. It's worth noting who publicly opposed /both/.

harry8··on How each pillar of the First Amendment is under attack
Now might be a good time to revisit the twitter files and really try to understand what was in them and why it was horrifying. Seems many people wanted to pretend they were nothing because it didn't suit their partisan narrative. We're seeing the same kinds of justification now just with different partisans.

If we don't call out abuses by our own tribe (whichever that is), maybe we're part of the attack.

harry8··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
Never trust a suggestion algorithm. Exponentially mistrust it with a developing mind.

You watch and approve everything in advance or don’t let them watch at all.

Alphablocks, numberblocks aren’t bad. Hey Douggie is ok.

There is decent stuff on YouTube havfunlearning or similar but you’ve got to play projectionist.

harry8··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
In Aus, among the most traditional and emotionally hardest of hard men includes the cricket community. It involves physical pain “suck it up!” And psychological warfare and abuse.

Bluey reduced most of them to tears in episode 47 of season 3. Directed right at them and if you’re not a cricketer it will be tough to see why it’s extraordinary. Just a huge wow of a piece of writing for those of us who grew up with the game and its associated culture.

In Bluey, it’s all great, all of it. But the writing is something beyond that.

harry8··on Apple takes UK to court over 'backdoor' order
Why would the UK government limit itself to being reasonable?

I can imagine most CEOs pausing before picking a fight with the intelligence services.

harry8··on Math Academy pulled me out of the Valley of Despair
Tried it for one of my kids, mini-review:

From Parent: Expensive Alpha quality - missing absolute value signs, auto-marks "1./2" as wrong compared to "1/2", parental controls have bugs, eg you want to pause, then change the date won't update the date you're pausing to. Uses XP (experience points) as gamified motivator and then doesn't respect their value by docking unnecessarily or due to bugs. Emailed on sign up to be "personally welcomed and invited to respond with feedback, or any questions" So I did, because I want this kind of effort to succeed. Response totally ignored all content of the email and suggested he could delete the account for me(!)

From student, who is quite a way ahead of his peers in math. "boring, annoying and stupid"

Account is paused due to the above, if we cancel it I'll be pretty annoyed given the unused portion and expense.

Khan Academy has very similar merit. You can donate a lot less than USD$50 / mth.

Maybe we got unlucky and the good intentions of "personally welcoming and requesting feedback, inviting questions" was lost due to getting snowed under so response LLM happened and totally ignoring follow up rather than being deliberately rude? Could well be.

Lotta hype about it, justified? I didn't see it.

harry8··on Trump's 'Crypto Reserve' Is Such Brazen Corruption
Sell it to prop up the dollar and/or pay down debt, same as gold reserves.

Whether crypto is a good idea for that purpose is a matter of opinion. I lean toward no. Strongly. Make the case either way and it can be a sensible discussion.

harry8··on Trump's 'Crypto Reserve' Is Such Brazen Corruption
Nonsense it is absolutely corruption when anyone from any party does it.

It may or may not be illegal and whatever lawyers and judges tell us about that it still stinks just as strongly.

Third option is that it's absolutely illegal but you won't get a conviction so it passes.

Maintain the outrage no matter who and especially if you feel they're on your "team" in the partisan BS.

harry8··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
Another one supporting the sequence CNN interview, then pedo tweet:

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-05-12/elon-musk-faces-defam...

>Mr Musk called Mr Unsworth a "pedo" in a July 15 post on his Twitter account after Mr Unsworth, in an interview with CNN, dismissed Mr Musk's attempts to help rescue the boys as a "PR stunt".

Hate on Musk (or anyone). Be accurate is the message here.

Musk calling a hero a pedo with no evidence in response after (correctly?) being accused of having a garbage solution that couldn't work and he could stick it on international tv is appalling.

Added: I wonder if it was the pro or anti musk faction that flagged the call fo accuracy ad provided references. Even more amusing if both.

harry8··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
I don’t disagree with any of that other than I’m pretty sure the sequence is the other way around. The guardian story linked, published at the time has the sequence cnn interview calling it a publicity stunt and the pedo guy tweet after that. Unless I’m reading it wrong somehow or they messed up the story?
harry8··on Spotify's Beta Used 'Pirate' MP3 Files, Some from Pirate Bay
Why did Spotify prosper and grooveshark fail?
harry8··on Carlos Slim cancels his collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink
I have the sequence the other way around. The pedo guy quote in response to the hero of the day describing musk those terms.

Is there source that confirms the sequence either way?

Added: Checking, the guardian story I linked has the pedo guy tweet after musk’s submarine was described as a publicity stunt on cnn.

harry8··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
Objection? No. Concerns yes, as have been detailed at length. No good trying to ram it through without doing the work. We can't manage the project for you etc. etc.

There is no silver bullet. You have to treat each one in the way that works for them. Those who do it well, it's a talent.

Or have the compromising photos of the boss and copies of the bank statements so he's scared and backs you publically always and then just roll anyone who isn't effusively enthusiastic. That works too. Wouldn't recommend it.

harry8··on Ask for no, don't ask for yes (2022)
IME you often get a response that seeks to turn it into s “conversation.” Keeping everything super vague but something that can be pointed to on s paper trail as “I expressed reservations”

Neither approval, nor disapproval just straight up quagmire.

There’s no silver bullet to getting things done successfully in any large organisation of humans.

harry8··on DOGE's only public ledger is riddled with mistakes
20 years ago I read a story about an obstetrician in the USA.

His premiums at that time for professional negligence were $1m per year. He would have to keep paying those premiums for 18 years after his retirement.

Same for every obstetrician.

Professional fees then must be set to cover those insurance premiums.

Has that changed for the better in the USA? Seems very unlikely to be the same in Europe.

Obstetrics is obviously a illustrative case. How are the professional negligence premiums across the other specialties?

Why does the effect of the US legal system never seem to come up much in the “US healthcare is insanely expensive” discussion? Is the effect of it really not significant?

harry8··on What happened when REM went mainstream
Really? Shows how far I am out of it. That must have been Ghastly. Back in '95 or so they seemed to play smaller capacity venues than sports stadiums (mostly with roofs?) The talk was that this was deliberate. I found it believable.

"Angie" seems more folk influenced than blues, for mine. Compare it to whatever you think is a good example of its genre and I'm sure you get the point. It's fine. Is it great?

Anyway The Stones remain an inspiring example to us all of sticking at it.

harry8··on What happened when REM went mainstream
And REM seem to have been determined not to be. Commercial decisions not to play stadiums and not stoke exaggerated tales of excess that would make Hunter Thompson blush?

It's kind of cool how longevity has worked for the Stones while they've been so consistently second rate. Starting not remotely in the same class as the Beatles but rebels. But by 1970 they weren't in the Beatles class of rebelliousness either. Songwriting improved but it needed to and not to Lennon-McCartney levels. Does anyone much rate them above Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Howlin Wolf, Hendrix or even Bert Jansch? Still they persisted. Their solo projects consistently sucked no matter what talent they brought in so the Stones continued and their cultural relevance grew.

Somehow I doubt anyone will care any more about Stones songs than Jagger or Richards solo songs 50 years hence. REM may fare no better. Could be wrong, only time will tell. Jagger's lips and tongue logo was another seemingly purely commercial decision that has greatly boosted their cultural relevance. In 1995 they were deemed by Microsoft to be second choice to REM on what we might assume to be a cultural basis.

harry8··on What happened when REM went mainstream
Plausibly, sure. Almost any decision is given people sometimes make terrible commercial decisions. We should acknowledge that the Windows 95 international saturation marketing blitz to the sound of "Start Me Up" failed to end the Stones. Sometime after that they did a concert film directed by Martin Scorsese, a movie featuring hanging out with Bill & Hillary Clinton and they also still seem to sell out 80,000 seat arenas playing their octogenarian loud blues. It seems slightly more plausible to me that the Stones made a commercial decision but again, maybe it was purely artistic or ethical because people also sometimes make terrible decisions on the basis of those motivations.

In the end we can't prove we exist and we deal in probabilities given evidence.

harry8··on What happened when REM went mainstream
Way back when, the big story about REM was that the world’s richest man, Bill Gates, wanted “It’s the end of the world” for his advertising blitz for windows 95. REM, they said, told him to take a hike so he had to settle for the Rolling Stones “Start Me Up” instead. Windows 95 was culturally pretty big.

Turning down a very large sum of money suggests you believe something in a way that simply lecturing others doesn’t.

I don’t know what the members of REM believe, probably not all the same thing. But whatever it is, maybe they do really believe it. That counts for something. Contrast Mick Jagger & Keith Richards.
