harry8··on A friendly tour of process memory on Linux
Think about using a modern x86-64 cpu core to run one process with no operating system. Know exactly what is in cache memory. Know exactly what deadlines you can meet and guarantee that.

It's quite a different thing to running a general purpose OS to multiplex each core with multiple processes and a hardware walked page table, TLB etc.

Obviously you know what you prefer for your laptop.

As we get more and more cores perhaps the system designs that have evolved may head back toward that simplicity somewhat? Anything above %x cpu usage gets its own isolated, un-interrupted core(s)? Uses low cost IPC? Hard to speculate with any real confidence.

> ...buy us anything.

Totally depends on who "us" and isn't. What problem is being solved etc. In the aggregate clearly the trade off has been beneficial to the most people. If what you want to do got traded, well you can still dream.

True.

But they could give consent in advance.

If this horrific disease progresses to the point where ... I give my consent for ... Subject to final approval from family member/doctor/whatever.

harry8··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
Because then you get a fight. Signal moves to F-Droid and F-Droid gets a huge mindshare increase and much harder to kill.

Signal is today's thing the security state in Europe & the US clearly hate and want to backdoor and destroy. So let's speculate they'd rather be able to make sure that no app, for any purpose that they don't control can survive or succeed?

harry8··on F-Droid and Google’s developer registration decree
Anyone else thinking this looks like precursor to banning Signal and similar?

1) Put google in control of what you can install.

2) Get google to block it.

Noting that making it harder to install does most of the job as you need you contacts to use signal before you can.

harry8··on FFmpeg Assembly Language Lessons
No way.

Apple stopping support for security upgrades is the issue requiring a phone to stop being used, by you or the 2nd hand recipient. Same issue for the various android vendors.

That sure won't change if your phone uses a little less battery decoding movies and your battery use will still be dominated by screen use.

harry8··on FFmpeg Assembly Language Lessons
Yeah power. But less so. My phone or laptop battery lasts shorter between charges. I’m not buying more phones or laptops to take up the slack. Powering the screen dominates battery usage between charges. It isn’t nothing, sure.

I’m in no way defending electron. It’s just not taking back the power and machines saved by ffmpeg. Which is a happy accident that’s nice. Restart your electron hate all you want.

harry8··on FFmpeg Assembly Language Lessons
They run on machines that are designed to have unused computer capacity. Desktops, laptops, tablets, phones. Responsiveness is the key.

Ffmpeg runs on a load of server farms for all your favourite streaming services and the bajillion more you’ve never heard of. Saving compute there saves machines and power.

Your point is well taken but there is a distinction that matters some.

harry8··on IQ tests results for AI
>Putting aside all of the discussion on whether IQ is a valid construct

>Having a computer score well on them is better than the computer scoring poorly, but probably does not mean anything close to what the same result means in a human.

The first caveat is important because if you don't "put it aside" they do in fact mean pretty much the same, i.e. nothing useful or relevant. You can use IQ to measure subnormal intelligence. Average or above scores mean nothing beyond that you can get those scores on an IQ test.

Worth repeating every time it comes up.

I was against Charles Manson, doubly so because he had a bad haircut.

See it?

No. Should have precisely zero baring on anything at all.

harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
Fair enough.

Go on then, show us your estimate for the cost of renting a fully charged towable battery for 2-3 days.

I'm struggling to see it being much cheaper than renting an ev for 2-3 days if such a thing were wished into existence.

harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
Well something is up because i simply do not see that counter argument anywhere in this thread. Crazy huh?
harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
I think maybe there’s some cross thread confusion.

The comparison I’m making is an external phone battery is $10. Replacing an ev battery is, hell i dunno, $10.000?

Not needing an external phone battery would be nice.

Needing external ev batteries is far more likely to be cost prohibitive. Adjacent to this thread people have raised size and weight issues as well. I didn’t even bother going that far because the straight up price puts it in a different ball park to an external phone battery.

Hope we’re all on the same page again!

harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
Uh. How much do car batteries cost again?
harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
for $10, right?
harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
I’d take a phone double the thickness to get double the battery life between charges. Options on that front are limited. Had an ulefone for a while which was better than most until the screen started getting constant phantom presses making it unusable.
harry8··on BYD begins testing solid-state EV batteries in the Seal
I’m out for 2-3 days. Better take an external battery for the phone. Done.

Doesn’t work with a car.

Really easy to work around Apple’s utterly crap battery life. If it were better that would be nice to have.

Going a certain distance so can’t take an ev at all. It’d be nice if you could, if your usage is mostly very urban, sure that’s just nice. Gotta visit Dad on the farm a dozen times a year or whatever? That’s not your life so you don’t see it as essential even if the rest of the driving is much shorter range.

so hard to track these things down with google nowadays. Treats every word you add as an "or" like yahoo used to when google took their search market. The move from search engine to suggestion engine has been a disaster from my point of view. Hard to see how it would be more profitable.

If you perform it from memory in public without paying royalties then yes, yes it is.

Should it be? Different question.

harry8··on Sly Stone has died
Not arguing.
harry8··on Sly Stone has died
I'd call it James Brown, then Sly. I actually prefer Sly's stuff but you can't really deny the star power of James Brown.
harry8··on Sly Stone has died
Oh no. No way.

Will never, ever be forgotten due to neglect.

Came right in the middle of arguably the greatest song-writing streak ever heard.

(random google hit about it, bound to be plenty of others others) https://firebirdmagazine.com/lists/steviewonder

I love Dark Side, it's great. Stevie on that form was something else and isn't going to be forgotten for a century or two at the minimum as long as civilisation survives to remember one of its high points. Maybe Sylvester Stewart had an influence in it too.

harry8··on Sly Stone has died
One story I heard of his influence was that Stevie Wonder did a guest spot in a Sly & the Family Stone gig and could feel the energy of the whole place, heaving.

Took that feeling and with a new record deal giving him creative control did Superstition, Higher Ground and all those classics.

It's hard to be cynical enough about rock history you see on tv, but it's at least plausible that one genius can inspire another, thinking of a Haydn & Mozart kind of thing.

"If You Want Me to Stay" probably my favourite Sly Stone track.

I never got around to listening to his stuff with Funkadelic, maybe today is that day.
