harper··on An Amazon Order Might Lock You Out of Trusted Traveler Programs
This is correct and exactly what the CPB officer told me.
harper··on Looking to start or join a support group of CTOs and engineering VPs in Chicago

harper··on Ask HN: How do you manage your contacts?
This is exactly how I manage my contacts. It works super well.

I also started using the full contact mobile carddav sync - which has worked super well.

The card scanner with fullcontact is also nice, but paid.

harper··on Ask HN: Developers above 35 – what are you doing?
36, running my first company as CEO. First time not 100% tech focused. I only code dashboards.
harper··on Uber Picks Obama’s Former Campaign Manager to Wage Its Regulatory Battles
They are very similar. Similar players in both worlds. Slightly different skills - but mostly the same basic work. just different constituents.

harper··on How do I deal with a difficult programmer joining an open source project?
Surprised that this isn't in the thread already.

Brian Fitzpatrick and Ben Collins-Sussman from Google have done a bunch of great talks about exactly this: How Open Source Projects Survive Poisonous People (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q52kFL8zVoM)

They also wrote a book about the topic: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920018025.do

All of their advice comes from their experience running the subversion project. It is also good general advice for dealing with humans/engineers/etc.

me too
harper··on Obama Campaign AWS Infrastructure In One Diagram
We used a lot of Akamai. For all user facing services.

The same systems are not used for the next election. Bitrot, differing requirements and a general distrust of technology all account for the political machine to rebuild each cycle.

This is obviously not ideal. I hope that OFA 4.0 will release a bunch of it as open source and it will help make the next cycle easier.

harper··on OFA + AWS
Turns out it was released. We had been working very hard to get this diagram out. Last I was involved, it was stuck with lawyers, etc.

OFA is awesome for releasing this. Hopefully next will be some of our codes and projects.

harper··on OFA + AWS
i guess this leaked. ;)
harper··on Meet the Obama campaign's $250 million fundraising platform
This is true. We looked at a lot of things post transaction to make sure the contribution was legit. We returned a lot of contributions.
harper··on Meet the Obama campaign's $250 million fundraising platform
In regards to Akamai and not Cloudfront - Akamai had a different offering than cloudfront. JdotP mentioned in this thread that we used Akamai GTM, it allowed us to do a lot of fun failover management which cloudfront didn't offer. It also allowed for SSL.
harper··on When the Nerds Go Marching In
we used python, ruby and php. a bit of java and what not sprinkled around for fun.
harper··on Nest learning thermostat gets refreshed with a slimmer design
although not necessarily a public api, you can control the nest via rest.

harper··on ZippyKid - The Next Generation of WordPress Hosting
I spent some time with the ZippyKid team that other day. I was quite impressed with what they were up to and the technology they were looking at for the future.

I am glad that they are focusing on support and service. This is a win for the wordpress hosting world.

harper··on 37signals invests in The Starter League
I am very happy for Neal and his team and, of course, 37signals. This is a great partnership and will lead to some great work.
harper··on Show HN: Markov Baby Name Generator
I built one of these quite awhile ago to help a friend pick his babies name.

https://github.com/harperreed/Baby-Chains

The names it generates are hilarious.

Markov chains are wonderful things. A good markov chain bot will really spice up a company IRC channel.
