harichinnan··on Google changes Palestinian location from 'Territories' to 'Palestine'
If it was this easy, google should take a survey in asia and redraw the map of every country there. A map of India with Line of Control with Kashmir and Line of Actual control with China as real borders should permanently resolve the issues between three nuclear armed nations.

There is more. The island between Japan and China. The island between Russia and Japan. Also for Sri Lanka create a map of Tamil nation with Jaffna as capital. And Taiwan..

Wish it was so easy...

harichinnan··on The Myth of America's Tech Talent Shortage
Back in days when I was looking for a job, Infosys was the dream company to work for in India for a lot of top talent. They would hire only the toppers from top 10 colleges in India and that too with a proper puzzles test like all top US companies. So they hire people based only on academic credentials and then train them for 6 months in a "Infosys University".

I think the perception in US about the unqualified Indian engineers is because you might have seen engineers mostly in their budding years(1-3 years). As with everything else, those people do learn a thing or two as they gain more experience.

I came from India(never worked in Big Bodyshop like Infosys) and have been in US for 5 years now. I have seen really a lot of really dumb people and some really good people on both countries.

Check out the puzzles book that Infosys uses to hire people in India. http://books.google.com/books?id=F-idu9oxkdgC&printsec=f...

harichinnan··on In India, 'no frills' hospitals offer $800 heart surgery
That's a factual statement. Just like you could've gone to the dentist in Oklahome and got H1V or Hepatitis. http://abcnews.go.com/Health/60-oklahoma-dental-patients-tes...
harichinnan··on Top Reasons I like Postgres Over SQL Server
I would recommend Talend Open Studio for the ETL portion. You'll get the same SQL bulk load feature as SSIS with any Database. http://www.talend.com/products/talend-open-studio

Choose Big Data or Integration downloads.

harichinnan··on Lockheed Martin pays $10M for D-Wave's Quantum Computer
Did anyone try their developer portal. I'm all excited to hear that they'll put up their quantum computer online after Beta. http://www.dwavesys.com/en/dev-portal.html
harichinnan··on H1B Visa Lottery for FY 2014
The program was first come first server after financial crisis. Now US economy became more attractive to foreign engineers and consulting companies once again.
harichinnan··on Zombie VCs
dmor stands to profit with the list if some VCs send non-public data to her to get them off the list. That's extortion. She could become the Verisign of VC business. dmor approved VC list.
harichinnan··on A mother tongue spoken by millions of Americans still gets no respect
Hindi is written in Sanskrit letters and Urudu is written in Arabic script. The languages use same words. Hindi is the primary official language for India and Urudu is the primary national language for Pakistan.

Two dialects protected by armies navies and nuclear bombs.

harichinnan··on Arch Linux: MariaDB replaces MySQL in repositories
Mysql cannot do parallel query. That's a single query won't spin off multiple threads and work in parallel. This makes it a bad solution for say aggregating over large data. Mysql can handle lots of threads(queries) in parallel making it an ideal solution for web.

Postgres can do parallel query.

harichinnan··on Apple's Data Centers Now Running on 100% Renewable Energy
This is like Power To Choose in Texas. You could choose a renewable energy source from the list. You might be supplied from the nearest coal based plant. However you are still helping the few companies that produce and sell renewable energy to the grid.
harichinnan··on The Play Framework at LinkedIn
You are one lucky B!!! Not everyone gets such a choice. It would be either Play or Spring and family.
harichinnan··on 184 year-old Indian library goes digital, including 444 yr-old book on Alexander
I think the library and the books survived because the Kochi-Thiruvithankur area was never under foreign rule.
harichinnan··on Michael Moritz on immigration reform
It sounds like marxist unionism that I'm so used to. However that's not how free market works. Nobody can build a business paying people an ever increasing salary. Until and unless there are lots of companies in U.S that could pay people an ever increasing salary, there's a shortage of tech skills. So a simple measure of shortage of skills is to look at median wages for let's a 5+ years experienced engineer in a particular technology. If the graph points upwards over last few years, you have a tech shortage and sooner than later, some companies(usually startups) would get starved of well qualified engineers.
harichinnan··on Ask HN: Open source app idea. Get rid of my gun app
Can you provide details of the guns that were used in last few mass shootings, starting with yesterday's. I heard two pistols and a semi-automatic with which he sprayed bullets. And his mother went through all the training and background checks to buy them.
harichinnan··on Ask HN: Open source app idea. Get rid of my gun app
People with mental health issues usuaaly won't have the techincal know how/ skills to build a bomb using toilet cleaners. I come from India, where there are groups that make low tech bombs. Not individuals. Often times they injure themselves than kill a lot of people. The ones that kill 100's often require well regulated chemicals.
harichinnan··on Ask HN: Open source app idea. Get rid of my gun app
A man stabbed 22 children. Nobody died. They are in hospital. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/man-stabs-22-child...

I wish the man in Connecticut stabbed the kids instead of using an assault weapon to blast them away.

harichinnan··on Ask HN: Open source app idea. Get rid of my gun app
I'm asking for regulation on assault weapons. Not a ban on guns. This will be more like asking people to wear seat belts and take a license test than banning cars.
harichinnan··on Ask HN: Open source app idea. Get rid of my gun app
If successful, this would become a grass roots level gun control movement with lots of press coverage. However I couldn't find any documentation that has instructions on how to get rid of a gun if the owner changes his mind/fears misuse by family members.
harichinnan··on The Pinboard Investment Co-Prosperity Cloud

harichinnan··on High-skill green cards get lame-duck push in Congress
You have to put things in context here. Companies exist to make money. They have a business build around making money by hiring people at a set upper bound on salary. I wish there were more companies that would pay million dollar salaries with bonuses to Software Engineers. Until that happens, a skills shortage means, there's a lack of people who would work at a certain salary range, possessing a certain skillset. We certainly have a skills shortage in software industry.
harichinnan··on Ask HN: Help, HN'er in trouble, we need a laywer in Delhi immediately
Lawyers certainly help. However you could also have someone contact a local women's rights group. Also put the word out to some of her Indian friends. May be someone could get some "political" help to get things going. That's how it works in India. If you know someone really rich in Delhi, they could also help. Most likely they know a M.L.A or an M.P or someone high up in the police. I hope fellow HN'rs with political contacts in Delhi would reach out to you.
harichinnan··on Ask HN: Help, HN'er in trouble, we need a laywer in Delhi immediately
Next time you need a lawyer urgently in India urgently, walk upto a court house. There'll be swarms of lawyers coming your way. Talk to a few of them in a group. Pick the one you feel comfortable. Lawyers are under employed in India, except for a select few who graduate to there own offices and staff. The rest ply the court houses looking for work.
harichinnan··on Google Street View: A wolf in sheep’s clothing
May be they swap the on-board computer with some custom firmware that has hooks for the self-drive module.
harichinnan··on Indus Valley Civilization’s Collapse Explained
Watch Story of India in Netflix if you are interested in Indus valley civilization and India's history in general. It's pretty unbiased, coming from BBC.
harichinnan··on Twitter Rolls Twitter.com Back to a Server-Side Architecture
I wonder if this could be remedied by using a front end Web App Server consuming the JSON API. So you would have a JSON API server and a front end Web App say in Node using the API as a database. You would have the advantages of building a SOA architecture, letting the API server do the heavy lifting. And you could reuse a well tested API for Mobile Apps. I would think a Meteor.JS like front end would be an ideal solution for low traffic websites(Not twitter!)
harichinnan··on Docking standard for the International Space Station
Mating Interface Definition.. Androgynous Docking System.. Soft Capturing..Hard Capturing.. Someone in NASA was watching porn when they wrote this.
harichinnan··on How India Became America
Another disillusioned Indian here. I'm in the middle of a month long vacation after living in US for 3 years.

After a boom of 10 years, we now have really good highways in most part of the country. However I saw at least one bullock cart, some stray cows and people trying to cross a 4 lane US Interstate like Highway. Also the entries to highways were ill-planned. Traffic regulations and speed limits were not updated in light of recent developments.

Tamil Nadu, one of the growth engines of Indian economy gets 10 hr power cuts everyday because the chief minister refuses to open a newly constructed nuclear power plant.

Engineering colleges in India track their students round the clock and report to parents on their activities. Someone I know goes to a school where they conduct "aptitude" classes 3 saturdays+ one sunday a month for preparing students to attend Infosys(Wipro, TCS)( All three have the same business models, body shops) interviews. Kids literally buy their thesis(project) from companies that have a ready made project for them, so they could focus more on getting into one of the Body Shops.

Also I just read that many of the companies that got into "emerging "(Airlines, Telecom) Indian economy are either running on losses or never made a profit.

harichinnan··on A myth called the Indian programmer
Most of the Indian Software Engineers work in Software Maintenance business, production support, database administration, network maintenance etc. They are all challenging jobs. Some companies perform custom software development for large clients, and they perform on par with "in-house" software engineers in US and Europe. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Zynga and other coll companies also have offices and they hire the best and brightest programmers in India. India does not have a startup culture like US.
harichinnan··on MITx Opens First Course for Enrollment
I come from India. We have the world's toughest entrance examinations to get to public funded courses. I got an engineering degree through one of those. However once I got through the admissions, I found the courses outdated. The professors got into colleges after bribing the managers and were sub-par in their teaching, the labs under-funded and there were frequent strikes at school for things like proper lodging. However the tough entrance exams meant that most of the students graduated and became successful self-taught professionals. I think something like Mitx, has the potential to become the single curriculum for the entire planet. Kids would be demanding this instead of the stale university offerings. Some of them pay ridiculous amounts of money for getting into private colleges without any merit scholarship. Check the below link. Mitx could become the university of alderaan for planet earth!!! Think about a million hungry Mitx grads a year getting through grueling MiT level coursework. That could take technology to unforeseen levels.
