happycube··on ELKS: Linux for 16-bit Intel Processors
Very awesome work indeed... I haven't looked at ELKS in a long time and seeing everything it can do now is heartwarming.

The 8018x/ROM mode sounds like it could make for a fun breadboarding project, not that I'll likely wind up doing it myself. Is there any way to run it in emulation?

Running native compilers on XT/286 hardware does indeed sound sloooow. At least it can be tested, probably automatically, in emulators where it'd run faster than the native compilers did back when this all started :)

---

It's funny... 7-10 year old hardware back in 95-96 when this started could barely keep up with current software at all, and I'm writing this on a 7 year old Dell Precision (albeit upgraded well beyond stock :) ) that still runs Linux pretty darn well.

For embedded uses, 1GB is certainly big enough to not need to be 32-bit, so it makes sense IMO to use the same 64-bit binaries/toolchains/BSPs as larger platforms, especially since they're better supported by upstreams now.

It's a hobby, not big and professional like GNU^H^H^HLinux.

Seriously, I haven't worked on this in a long time (I'm Chad) and I'm very impressed by the changelog! Wouldn't have ever thought it'd run DOOM. ;) (and the use of OS/2 for medium model is clever too)

Got curious and did a quick search - at least on this one sample a regular Core 2 Duo runs circles around the IIIi:

Ouuuuch. There oughta (still) be a law.

heh... IMO AI often works better when you ask it "how do/can I?" instead of "do this for me!"
happycube··on Zen5's AVX512 Teardown and More
I'd say 2018 ~= 2024 instead of 2014 (those craptops all too often had dual-core i5's and i7's, 15" TN 768 screens, and HDDs), but yeah things have slowed down a bit.

Desktop Ryzen 4's and newer have a very small iGPU that's just enough to put up a desktop (and presumably a framebuffer fast enough to feed a discrete card's output into)

happycube··on The Space Quest II Master Disk Blunder
Yeah it'd be interesting to have a full analog floppy reader/writer for data recovery. Might as well make it fast enough to read early hard drives (at least through early IDE) too.

Probably could stuff quite a bit more data using today's methods on a disk, too, even though in the scheme of things it'd be pretty pointless... but why should that stop someone? ;)

Aside from very early prototypes, there were LD singles which were thinner and made more like CD's. Mostly 8" but there were a few 12"s made by Sonopress in Europe.

The source released is for the IBM-started version of DOS 4.0, but most of the talk here is about the Multitasking DOS 4 files (a binary copy of the first beta)

Case in point, the Xeon X5698, which was a 2-core 4.4ghz base freq Westmere made just for HFT. The regular ones were 3.6@4C and 3.467@6C, so it was quite a boost.

happycube··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
Yup! I started quite a long time ago (2013 or so), and then Simon Inns in ~2018-2019 built the duplicator and did a great job disseminating things.

oyvindln then worked on VHS decoding as well independantly, and there are quite a few other people helping out too that I can't remember to credit right now.

So my thought is if you're going to get sucked into a big hobby project, it's better to make it something other people can build and get into as well!

happycube··on He spent his life building a $1M stereo
Subwoofer and/or chair-mounted bass shakers?

In any case $x00 and the ability to say 'eh, good enough' in the end should do...

... OTOH my quixotic project was figuring out RF capture of Laserdiscs which involves digging pretty deep, but it's all open source and it's not just my thing anymore.

This all makes me think of Kermit talking about dreams that get better the more people you share them with.

happycube··on New GeForce RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, RTX 4070 Super
For running AI models etc the 4070ti is the best value of the bunch by far. Memory size and bandwidth are the most important things in that order (which makes the 4050, er, 4060ti 16GB a weak card)

Ergo, there's a decent chance it won't sell for MSRP.

Google has a ton of scanned books and magazines from libraries etc, on top of their own web crawls. If they don't have the equivalent of libgen tucked away something's gone wrong.
happycube··on Show HN: Audio plugin for circuit-bent MP3 compression sounds
Analog audio was first, and video was always analog, but most of the time laserdisc audio playback is literally CD Audio (not merely 16bit/44.1khz but the same intermediate data/error correction/scrambling... even CD-G was recycled into LD-G)

That said, assuming a pilot signal was added one could probably put two to three hours of PAL-frequency analog audio (which completely went away with digital sound) onto a CD.

happycube··on OpenAI's chaos does not add up
The problem with that is... humanity is doing a good enough job of messing things up without AGI. So if AGI was delayed by such, there's a non-zero chance humanity fails to create AGI or survive in the new timeline.

Between the Earth's climate/environment being wrecked (we're well into some of the pessimistic projections for the 2050's) and SARS being allowed to run unchecked playing Russian Roulette with peoples' health (including literal brain damage), we're going to need a miracle.
