hans··on Foursquare Gets $45M and a New CEO to Build Out Enterprise Business
I would've spit my coffee up as an investor back when they told me they're ditching check-ins. That was such a terribly bad move, caused so many users to forget them, really Crowley should've moved all the way out.

It was one of those "we're going to be like steve" and do some jerk product design move, but it wasn't like steve in that it failed.

Rule #1 for the net: if you ever get so incredibly lucky as to define a verb (like google it, or tweet that), like they had with check-ins but we just didn't get to fully grok it and then they whacked it ... grow that like gold.

They should've built out check-ins as this powerful "where am i now" related kind of thing .. it could've been a real mobile local gem beyond anything today. Think the star trek moment where you scan where you are and it tells you all sorts of interesting things, useful utility links, cool data.

But instead they called it "swarm" and made it all about your bro's ... maybe that says something about Sf? oh wait they're in NY.

Another great book on this subject:

The Nazi Rocketeers by dennis piszkeiwicz

hans··on What The New York Times Didn’t Say About Amazon
Just love that Bezos quote: "that's not the amazon that i know" ... hmm gee uthink? billionaire founder has a different experience, wow who'd a thought?

glassdoor has spelled this out for a long time but its amusing that amazon doesn't admit they'll change.

my thinking is: a company that relishes in frugality = your machine your monitors and your coffee will suck, you will never get promoted, stack rank Plus all this bs about suing via nda and indebtedness around relo assistance etc sounds like the suck .. amazon is downright hostile

hans··on Loyalists vs. Mercenaries
yep and the issue of real estate + housing costs in SF pretty much ensure that you have to be mercenary or you don't live there ..
hans··on The days are long but the decades are short
our culture is so tone deaf to aging, you turn 30 and think life is behind you, old man before death's door ..

(anyone know the W.Blake drawing?)

in another decade 19yr olds will be drafting up long blog posts about recipes for success, how they made it, legacy concerns et al.

its like the old man's domain got poached, and now old people have nothing to say they are so far out there .. :]

hans··on My experience of interviewing for a job at Apple
when i interviewed, at the end of the day, the dude went out of his way to tell me they'd let me know, no matter what, either way, in a few days. Then crickets .. i still resent how he was so insistent that i would hear from them. Just be honest jackass har har.
hans··on Amazon has sold no more than 35,000 Fire phones, data suggests
I see it as zon just beefing up their mobile abilities: build know in android and top level mobile software, lay the groundwork for future dev, as mobile grows just like pc grew but way more, your ability to take advantage of mobile growth improves. This phone stuff is just a learning curve, and as hardware decreases in cost over time, zon can get a foothold and take advantage.
hans··on Three Mozilla Board Members Resign over Choice of New CEO
i guess "mozillans" sounds too much like "villain"
hans··on Three Mozilla Board Members Resign over Choice of New CEO
never heard of "mozillians" ..
hans··on Mystery signal from a helicopter
cool thing is, we can start watching them back ;/

and critique whether they're joy riding or actually working etc

hans··on Why Are American Colleges Obsessed With 'Leadership'?
why is the tech industry obsessed with 'entrepreneurship' ?
hans··on The sad story of Facebook Platform
we really thought fB was going to become the user auth + data persistence layer for the entire web as they were pumping this platform idea: like noone would need to build user account storage ever again, and all the world would base their user accounts on top of fB ... that would've been worth billion$ but n0t g0nna happ3n.
hans··on You Are Naturally Short Housing
this can't be good, that hedge funds are currently buying up housing in a huge way, moving into rentals especially, going long housing, expect a rent grip like no other in the next 3-5yrs :

hans··on Engineers suck at finding the right jobs
Also when you get to early 40s doing web dev or web apps, especially if you dont have a GooG or stanford degree, your competition for work is essentially early 30 somethings, and age discrimination really becomes apparent. I have no idea what to do next for challenge and m0ney.
hans··on 2013 Automobile of the Year: Tesla Model S
Good thing Romney keeps wanting to throw Tesla under the bus, way to support innovation, way to cheer for jobs n0t.
hans··on Why Windows Just Can’t Win
I sat in on a MS presentation the other day, and it was a disaster. The terminology is off the chart confusing, the presenter constantly dropping terms then backing off with "oh but we aren't supposed to call it that" and then "oh but if marketing isn't listening i'll just call it that" ... back and forth.

It took forever just to explain metro (not metro) and windows RT (not metro but metro) and windows pro (with metro but not metro, i mean RT or ARM, or modern UI). ARM but not intel, desktop but including ARM/RT/metro but not metro. Just build apps for windows phone (but not mobile), but metro no wait not metro on mobile (i mean phone).

Honestly really crazy stuff, round and round.

hans··on 42% of US Internet Users Have a Facebook Account. For Twitter, It’s 16%
ok I admit, got that quote from the calacanis + sacca interview, awesome interview btw
hans··on 42% of US Internet Users Have a Facebook Account. For Twitter, It’s 16%
twitter is where you find people you want to know, facebook is where you find people you used to know ...
hans··on The GitHub hiring experience
ah good to hear, just joking love the Git! these articles usually remind me of exercise mags where a 20 something person brags about their abundance of health + energy level, oblivious to how hard it is to retain that after late 30s, ok i'm rambling ...
hans··on The GitHub hiring experience
So long as you're younger than 35 har har ...
hans··on What about Los Angeles?
yes E A is up there and seems to recruit a bunch ...
hans··on The Sun is Setting on Rails-style MVC Frameworks
as if we know what Foop is, lol
hans··on Ubuntu should zig to Apple’s zag
same here! I've been mulling over a mac book as this unity desktop is killing me, just have the mac as the desktop, and keep it headless linux.
hans··on My Neighbor, Steve Jobs
I know he's going, we all do, but man it feels like a kick in the gut for tech. Yes we know tech is actually bullshit, in the grand scheme of things, to keep us occupied, but somehow no Jobs means something less ... like the suits will kill off all the beauty because they don't understand that.

We need a new big visionary in the higher boardrooms but I don't see any, lately they're all just wall street and more so with time.

hans··on This Tech Bubble Is Different
yup, and this time it's mostly about unwinding desktop/workstation motifs, as well as single app as moat, apps are now fluid points of integrated services. we're going to learn how to unwind our boxes into all kinds of things. it feels like more of a baroque bubble, emotionally we'll change ... and that leads to opportunities.
hans··on Grub with the partners of Sequoia Capital
Isn't that a bootloader, that loads VCs on startup, and leverages equity resources as the company shell starts up?
hans··on Bankofamerica.com down since this morning
still down
hans··on Twenty Billionaires Who Started With Nothing
Another "you suck for being poor" story ... [update] really? 4 neg points, nice.
hans··on Meet The Team
Pretty sad to see such ridiculous cliches, even photographed like some cheap sitcom.
hans··on Ping: It's even worse than it appeared
Apple can't do social, nor any kind of web service? This is a blind spot for them, sure iTunes vod/commerce is a web service but as far an API or integration outside of their ownership must be impossible like a nerd attempting to dance ...
