hanikesn··on Bosch's brake-by-wire system may be the next big leap in automotive tech
Then you shouldn't get in a car. Bosch is the main manufacturer of airbag controllers and ECUs.
hanikesn··on Things we learned about LLMs in 2024
I'm curious. Can you go into more detail what kind of bug it found?
hanikesn··on Amazon Aurora DSQL
>Aurora is Amazon's own relational database. You can't run it yourself, only with Amazon. It can pretend to be either Postgres or MySQL. And it'll be cheaper and faster and have higher availability. But it won't be the exact same bits and bytes as your own Postgres, so there's some risks.

That doesn't ring true to me. From my understanding rds aurora mostly replaces the storage engines of these DBs and the frontent mostly follows upstream releases and is compatible with them.

hanikesn··on No Nat November: My Month Without IPv4
But no package would ever make it back as none would be sent to the gateway and even then the gateway would send it to the local network.
hanikesn··on Some Automattic employees accept severance package offer
Wow, blocking ACF is quite the move. All serious WP instances I know make heavy use of that.
hanikesn··on I got everything off the cloud: I'm now paying 10x LESS money
Did you ever hear of colocation, root servers and VPSs?
hanikesn··on Overview of cross-architecture portability problems
Looks like non 4k page sizes are missing, which tripped out some software running on asahi Linux.
hanikesn··on Using S3 as a Container Registry
That's seem standard AWS practice. Implement a new feature so you can check the box, but in practice it's a huge pain to actually use.
hanikesn··on Intel-undervolt: CPU undervolting and throttling configuration tool for Linux
Undervolting mostly helps with power consumption under load.
hanikesn··on 25 Years of Krita
Imagine porting a web app to new frameworks over 25 years or keeping up with Macs ui Framework over that time frame ...
hanikesn··on Swift sucks at web serving or does it?
He's wrong about increasing somaxconn. That'll just increase 'bufferbloat' if you're service can't keep up processing requests and is overloaded. The upstream load balancer will notice far too late and keep sending you way too many requests.
hanikesn··on Passkeys: A shattered dream
Strong mitm and phishing protection.
hanikesn··on YUI Compressor (2013)
>Symfony is still a pos framework

Symfony was a bit rough in the beginning, but I'd definitely rate it as one of the most well engineered web frameworks out there right now. I've been keeping small and large projects up-to-date for the past 10 years with only minimal effort. You just have to keep 3rd party deps in check.

hanikesn··on ArgoCon – Vendor-neutral Argo-focused Event
Absolutely, and argo really falls short when you have more complex patterns, like monorepos and promotion between different envs. Then you have to revert to argo events and workflows anyways and script your way through it.
hanikesn··on Linux network performance parameters
Because implementing TCP not just as a toy is incredibly difficult with tripwires that even subject matter experts struggle to get it right without decades of in field testing.
hanikesn··on Google Maps has become an eyesore
As so oftrn it's legal. For snti-competition reasons Google is not allowed to hotline Google Maps as first result on the search page.
hanikesn··on Hunting for Nginx alias traversals in the wild
It does when you use the root directive. Alias should hardly be used if possible for those reasons.
hanikesn··on BundesMessenger, a secure messenger for Germany’s public administration
The bwmessenger pilot started already in December 2019.
hanikesn··on Modern PHP features – PHP 8.0 and 8.1
symfony flex
hanikesn··on Kubernetes reinvented virtual machines in a good sense
Looks to me like an example of aws not having good defaults put of the box and not an k8s specific issue. Having to specific a `sleep 30` shutdown hook on pods is quite annoying though and some built-in should be added instead.
hanikesn··on Speed boost achievement unlocked on Docker Desktop 4.6 for Mac
On Linux you don't need Docker Desktop and and run docker natively without any VMs. FS is managed via overlayfs which provides near native performance.
hanikesn··on Fleet, a Lightweight IDE from JetBrains
Why not use intellij ultimate? You can easily add all the language plugins (mod clion based ones).
hanikesn··on Was Google Earth Stolen?
There's also https://cre.fm/cre222-terravision in German, which goes into a lot of detail with the ex CTO of ART+COM.
hanikesn··on Seven Years of Factorio Friday Facts (2020)
There's a verilog2factorio compiler: https://github.com/Redcrafter/verilog2factorio
hanikesn··on Higher quality audio makes people sound smarter
I can recommend USB speaker phones/headsets like the Jabra Speak series. Anker recently released their own series as well and there's also beyerdynamic phonum. The big benefit is that noise cancellation is builtin and USB sound is sufficiently standardized that there shouldn't be any issues.

Though I went to the trouble recently to configure builtin pulseaudio noise cancellation and got quite good results as well.

hanikesn··on Okta to Acquire Auth0 for $6.5B
FusionAuth looks quite interesting. I'd like to see a comparison with AzureActiveDirectoy as well as in my last company we ended up sticking with it instead of migrating to auth0/octa/servicenow. Especially because Developer self-service works very well there. I couldn't find any details about this on your website.
hanikesn··on I'm tired of this anti-Wayland horseshit
I'd love to use Wayland, but having to use proprietary nvidia drivers for performance and working screen sharing via Firefox, Chrome, Zoom and Teamviewer force me to stay with X11 for some time. Though there's much progress on the Chrome Firefox front I fear it will take some time until proprietary apps will follow.
hanikesn··on Slack’s Outage on January 4th 2021
Interesting, I was wondering whether using a shared VPC would have been the better solution, but it turns out they use a shared VPC per region and peer them via TGW. IMHO it'd be worth peering those regions individually, to get rid of that potential bottleneck. Of course you loose quite a few interesting features.
hanikesn··on Factorio 1.1 stable
Had a blast with Krastorio 2. Thanks for your Industrial Revolution recommendation!
hanikesn··on HopsFS: 100x Times Faster Than AWS S3
Quobyte claim to have solved the synchronized distributed POSIX filesystem (mod geographically ).
