hanifbbz··on Show HN: Hacker News Link Generator
Yes, that's the inspiration. The difference is that this one generates a link (rich or plain text) that can be put in a web page. It doesn't require the audience to have bookmarklet installed.
hanifbbz··on Show HN: Hacker News Link Generator
This post itself was generated using the web app.

Use case: Putting a link in your pages (e.g. blog posts or newsletters) to make it easier for your readers to share it on Hacker News. It is open source.

hanifbbz··on TeamTopologies
Good summary of the book.
hanifbbz··on Don’t Build Software
It's true that many businesses which build software have no business writing software.
hanifbbz··on Technical Committee Lifecycle
> To keep the committee alive, it expands scope, recruits more people, and assimilates their mandate to the hive. Internally it feels like a grass-root movement on the rise. In reality, it’s about repurposing an expensive tool (recurring meetings with high-pay participants) for every problem. It may even emit some manifesto or generic vision and mission at this point.

One leg of the problem is the environment that allows the committees continue way past their expiration date. How can they get away with it?

hanifbbz··on The Dangers of Enforcing a Premature RTO Policy
Amazon layoff caused a lot of uncertainty internally. Inflation made some people work extra and some picked a side gig. Turns out the percentage of people who think they are being monitored is less than the managers who do monitor them! Meanwhile tax-breaks and municipalities have a say in forcing the employees to come back to the city.

The article is in favor of hybrid work but with a policy that doesn't back-fire with attrition of top talent and hurting the economy long term. There's also one example RTO policy.

hanifbbz··on We invested 10% to pay back tech debt
Story from a job I had couple of years ago. At the time I took it for granted but I haven’t seen something quite like it before or after.
hanifbbz··on Coping with the Layoff Hangover: Imposter Syndrome, Internal Conflict and Shame
"Remember who you were before the layoff and remind yourself of that success when you feel the imposter creeping in."
hanifbbz··on I failed three job applications, here's what I learned
Author here. I do hire staff engineers these days. A few points:

1. Spotify is a Swedish company with a strong brand identity. Conformity culture is a bit strong, so I can totally understand why they would want "someone like us" than someone who would ask the challenging questions. That's my take on that interaction but maybe I didn't write it well. I edited the article a bit.

2. Staff is a leadership position and like other leadership roles, the impact of your personal belief will not stay at the individual level but rather spread. A positive attitude pays dividents. In that particular example, I went in with negative prejudice. The right interaction would be to have an objective argument and share their view as someone who bought into it and is working at the company. The least they could do is to use that as an opportunity to set the record straight. At least that is what I do if a candidate asks the hard questions. I don't have to convince them, but I'll do my best to honestly answer it and quite frankly maybe I learn something about the company I'm presenting that I didn't know.

hanifbbz··on I failed three job applications, here's what I learned
Would be fun to sit in the room where they motivated it: "we need a kick ass office to hire the best talent to be able to maximize the ..." I don't know where I was going with this! I have no clue how they got away with it :D
hanifbbz··on I failed three job applications, here's what I learned
In this particular case I guess questioning the business model of the company by bringing some controversy on the first interaction wasn't very strategic. Maybe the staff engineers they have hired don't do that!
hanifbbz··on I failed three job applications, here's what I learned
Good to know. Thanks for sharing.
hanifbbz··on I failed 3 job applications, here's what I learned
Author here, it is the layoff season and some of us may need to get into the interview mode. I've done hundreds of interviews in the past few years to hire the best talent but I've spent a significant time on the other side of the interview table as well.

In this post, I will go through my top 3 favorite interview lessons hoping to shorten the learning curve for someone who may be on the job market.

hanifbbz··on [dead]
The "years" is a quantitative metric which doesn't map well to the quality of challenges, one's learnings, performance or growth. How to make most of our years? Exposing ourselves to challenges, even synthetic ones.
hanifbbz··on [dead]
First they ignore you. Then they ridicule you. Then they copy you.

That about sums up how traditional manufacturers reacted to Tesla as a phenomena.

This article goes into the curious explosion of software in the mobility industry and why it's not about software. It then defines 4 maturity levels in the mobility industry.

hanifbbz··on Why none of my books are available on Audible
Ironically it is paywalled by Medium. Commenting is only allowed when using their app (I'm on phone).

Was it intentional? Can someone ping the author and see if they can remove the paywall to increase the blast radius of such an important piece?

hanifbbz··on Tell HN: Read up on your GitHub Support SLA
How does multiple orgs reduce costs?
hanifbbz··on Tell HN: Read up on your GitHub Support SLA
Reading SLA can be complicated but it definitely pays back both in terms of money and reduced risk. Here's a dissection of S3 SLA as an example: https://alexewerlof.medium.com/dissecting-the-s3-sla-26421dd... and Amazon is quite good.
hanifbbz··on Ask HN: Best European companies to apply for a Master's degree internship/thesis
Schibsted is one of the best in EU. They're basically like the Google of the Nordics but they are behind many brands instead of just one. The company culture is very diverse and there's a lot of opportunities inside the company as you can move from team to team and company to company inside the mother company.

Disclaimer: I am a happy employee there.

hanifbbz··on Ask HN: Is it possible for non-Ivy grads to land a job with a top company?
Maybe the problem definition can be changed a bit. Instead of asking "am I good enough to work for a top company?" you can ask "how can I create a business where smart people compete to get into?"

I highly recommend "Rich Dad Poor Dad" by Robert T. Kiyosaki (Author)

hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
Obviously you are not a Chrome user. It's possible to avoid this dialog. However it is quite annoying over a long usage period. And that's where you don't feel the pain ;)
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
And that happened in a released product. Not sure if Chrome engineers bother to test the product thoroughly now that they have such a quick unobtrusive update system. Updates are bad. They are the reason for the demise of Windows. They ease mistakes for sloppy people.
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
work of art! :)
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
I hate it when the software becomes some sort of big brother or parent. Trust the user and respect their choices, even if you're designing software for young kids! :D
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
exactly. Now that the browsers have built-in popup blockers why should they show a popup of their own? It's like police selling weeds! WRONG! :-D
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
The zoom feature seems to be site-wide. i.e. if you have two tabs from the same site, they have the same zoom level. It's a little unexpected.

The full-screen popup is also very annoying. +1

hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
Can one translate a page after turning off this feature in Chrome Android?
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
and that is one reason people should be able to use Google Translate as a last resort! ;)
hanifbbz··on Chrome added an annoying translation feature
Totally agree. If Chrome was used by a small group of people it wouldn't matter, but for a browser with world domination ambitions it's just wrong to miss a big user base. Arond 10% of the world population are immigrants and a bigger group are language learners. Chrome annoys both.
