Computers are glorified calculators, yet they power most of our lives
handzhiev··on Kimi K2 is a state-of-the-art mixture-of-experts (MoE) language model
I tried it a couple of times in comparison to Claude. Kimi wrote much simpler and more readable code than Claude's over-engineered solutions. It missed a few minor subtle edge cases that Claude took care of though.
handzhiev··on The hidden cost of AI coding
No, because it's usually a few years old and already obsolete - the frameworks and the language have gone through a gazillion changes and what you did in 2021 suddenly no longer works at all.
handzhiev··on OpenAI cofounder John Schulman is joining Mira Murati's startup
Has Mira shown anything from her new startup so far? Genuine question. I am trying to keep up with the space, but never heard anything about her after leaving OpenAI except that she got some investors.

Indeed, even design and prepress required quite expensive hardware. There was a time when very expensive Silicone Graphics workstations were a thing.

handzhiev··on Lead and cadmium found in muscle-building protein powders, report says
Many perfectly respect your privacy but don't want to be bothered reading 100 pages vague legal document from the EU.
handzhiev··on Ask HN: Are you unable to find employment?
I don't think healthcare alone is stopping people from going on their own. What could a developer do on their own? Start a startup? Extremely hard and risky. Freelancing? Requires marketing and lots of other stuff most of us suck at. And the freelancing market isn't that much better now either.
handzhiev··on Ask HN: Are you unable to find employment?
If such a ban is in power, many companies will either close or move abroad. It's as simple as that. I agree, it will be totally destructive.
handzhiev··on DeepSeek-V3
How is this not on the front page. It's a remarkable release.

I've heard similar statements about human translation - and look where the translators are now
handzhiev··on The tooth, the whole tooth and the jawbone too
Teeth treatment alone is enough to be very very thankful that we live today vs even a century ago
handzhiev··on My second year without a job
You may be surprised but the majority of people who own stuff do not worry whether they should get a third monitor or a new kitchen appliance. We just use some items and don't care much about them. If the TV breaks I'd look for a new one, but otherwise I don't care.
handzhiev··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
Everyone who has been to Japan in the last 20 years or so could argue about the quality of life. Japan is not quite "shiny" and people are not rich.

handzhiev··on Ask HN: Recommendation for a SWE looking to get up to speed with latest on AI
For news-like content I follow accounts on X: @kimmonismus @apples_jimmy and the accounts of Antropic, Mistal, Gemini / DeepMind and OpenAI. I think everyone who is really interested in the hot AI developments must also follow what comes from China. I follow https://chinai.substack.com/ but I am open to hear about other Chinese resources.
handzhiev··on The tech utopia fantasy is over
Pro-AI comments regularly get downvoted. I find this amusing or sad. Or maybe both.
handzhiev··on PHP 8.4
That's not true. For mission-critical apps we route the traffic to the stable version while uploading the new version. This may be similar to what most CI tools do but it doesn't change the fact that we just upload the files and can do it as we see fit. Another good solution is to simply switch off a feature for maintenance while uploading it's files. If your software is well planned, that's a breeze and still keeps the whole process very simple.
handzhiev··on PHP 8.4
I do it all the time, thank you very much. For a simple web app I don't even need a framework - you can literally create a simple files/folder structure, include files, include folders and get stuff done. An yeah, you can also upload the files by FTP. For something more complicated I'd use WP or Code Igniter depending on the specific project. And then you can again just SFTP those files to the server.
handzhiev··on Claude AI built me a React app to compare maps side by side
And of course every time such comments get downvoted. Folks, you can downvote as much as you want - I don't give a fuck even if my reputation goes negative. This won't make you right.

This desire of deniers to prove to people who actually get tons of benefit of LLMs that they aren't getting it is becoming more ridiculous every time.

"You can't use LLMs for this or that because of this and that!!!".

But I AM using them. Every. Single. Day.

handzhiev··on Ask HN: What hacks/tips do you use to make AI work better for you?
"No one includes complete detail at saying it’s useful and life-changing too"

There are at least 3 posts in this very discussion sharing details and githup repos with code written mostly by LLM.

handzhiev··on How I write code using Cursor
I also find it fascinating how in almost every LLM-related discussion there are people always writing arguments to prove that LLMs do not work.

OK, I understand. Maybe they can't get much use of them and that's fine. But why they always insist that the tools don't work for everyone is something I can't make any sense of.

I stopped arguing online about this though. If they don't want to use LLMs that's fine too. Others (we) are taking their business.

handzhiev··on Crossing the USA by Train
The Balkans are also a great place to experience efficient train travel :)
handzhiev··on Why Freelancing Isn't the Dream It's Made Out to Be
I'm doing various forms of small business including freelancing for 20+ years. Some of these years I was working as a consultant for one client, a few years were primarily focused on own products, some years were "pure freelancing" similar to what's described in the article. Now again working primary for one client but still managing my own products and taking small gigs on the side.

Except in the beginning, I've had no issues with income but as the others said you need safe cash cushion and financial discipline.

Context switching and overburning is a problem but ask any small business owner outside of the IT and they'll tell you something alike.

Freelancing is just a form of small business and small business is hard. But the level of freedom is higher than that of the employee.

handzhiev··on The Static Site Paradox
<?php include("header.html');?> You only need to allow PHP to run in .html files (if you insist your files being named .html(
handzhiev··on Filed: WP Engine Inc. v Automattic Inc. and Matthew Charles Mullenweg [pdf]
I can hardly imagine anyone being in cult with WP. People use it because of the huge ecosystem around it and the accessible talent pool. One can hardly be impressed by the tech itself - in fact almost everyone thinks it sucks.
handzhiev··on Sorry, GenAI is NOT going to 10x computer programming
And it's not just the speed. The mental energy I save from having AI do some work vs. me doing it is allowing me to feel better, have mental energy for different things, be more productive, or just have some rest.
