hammerandtongs··on State of Clojure 2016 – Results and Analysis
Yes this was my thinking on how to proceed.

I'm just kind of surprised and disconcerted how little I could find on the web, specifically for minimizing footprint.

hammerandtongs··on State of Clojure 2016 – Results and Analysis
One of the things that always stops me pushing too far into clojure is memory footprint.

Does anyone have any suggestions or resources for how to keep the upfront memory cost of the jvm to a minimum (and monitor that its still within bounds over time).

128m is not acceptable, for my uses clojure would need to compete with go and rust which I can deliver 10-20m running in memory (and lightning fast).

I don't expect 10-20m but 10x doesn't work for me.

Think of deploying to Sandstorm.io as my goal ie small personal servers.

https://docs.nativescript.org/runtimes/android/advanced-topi...

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding your concern, but it doesn't look like js allocates for the actual object just a proxy for the java.

hammerandtongs··on Tempted to Abandon React Native for Native Android
My next foray into mobile is going to be with this-

https://www.nativescript.org/

Digging through the api it just looks much more capable in directly calling android instead of abstracted cross platform blobs.

hammerandtongs··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
matrix.org with the vector.im and android client have been pretty great so far.

Matrix has solved the right engineering problem first which is the persistence of the chats across all of your clients.

hammerandtongs··on Economic Inequality
It's particularly disturbing when his wealth makes him influential.

He has the material means to not need corn-pone opinions but instead holds to them and encourages them in his followers.

hammerandtongs··on Economic Inequality
Ad hominem doesn't quite mean what you suggest.

The two postings are directly related and not an attack based on his wearing of red shirts on thursdays.

From the wikipedia """Ad hominem reasoning is not always fallacious, for example, when it relates to the credibility of statements of fact or when used in certain kinds of moral and practical reasoning.[3]"""

hammerandtongs··on Economic Inequality
Actually thanks for the web archive method I'll use that again.

I was factually confused by this undated repost, but what was unneccessary or unwarranted?

Does the timing in posts make this deeply self involved opinion ok?

hammerandtongs··on Economic Inequality
Citation needed.

Your quibble over the precise date of the post seems predictive of an inability to deal with the larger points raised.

hammerandtongs··on Economic Inequality
I LOVE that Paul Graham posted this just a day after posting Mark Twain's "corn-pone opinions" with no sense of irony or self awareness.

""" "You tell me whar a man gits his corn pone, en I'll tell you what his 'pinions is."...

The black philosopher's idea was that a man is not independent, and cannot afford views which might interfere with his bread and butter. If he would prosper, he must train with the majority; in matters of large moment, like politics and religion, he must think and feel with the bulk of his neighbors, or suffer damage in his social standing and in his business prosperities."""

This billionaire's opinion of wealth inequality, his own part in it, and the straw men he battles are the very essence of corn-pone based thinking that Twain is speaking to.

Graham's (toxic and highly biased) opinion about wealth inequality is a condition of how he gets his corn-pone every day. To him, however, this corn-pone opinion becomes the very essence of rational thinking amongst himself and his peers (like Marc Andreesen and his periodic twitterisms).

hammerandtongs··on Show HN: GPU text rendering with vector textures
I assume you are thinking through it's implications for WebVR+servo?

I can see questioning the utility for current 2d applications but this is really critical speed when the large amount of translation and scaling of many pages in a 3d environment is the expectation.

The css3d "portal" solution for webgl doesn't seem like it can get us very far at all...

I'd use this today in my webvr/gl project if it was source complete.

hammerandtongs··on The Sad State of Personal Knowledgebases
Emacs and orgmode are probably your next step :)

orgmode is really a superset of markdown with PIM markup added.

It exports to markdown and a ton of other formats.

Cheers.

hammerandtongs··on Email made me miserable, so I decided to build my own email app from scratch
Supporting POP3 seems like an anti-feature in 2015.

It seems to me, that muddling its lack of features into the middle of an application that properly supports IMAP would make your internal api much more complex?

hammerandtongs··on The Dangers of Setting VR Expectations and Valuations Too High
Yes I think you get my drift then.

Based on your example, I would say that VR is even pre-PalmPilot.

It's still a territory for people building the future or for those wanting to peek at it.

hammerandtongs··on The Dangers of Setting VR Expectations and Valuations Too High
You seem to be somewhat conflating "mass consumer adoption" and "useful".

I'm not a fan of Facebook's mass consumer adoption strategy, I don't think it's ready.

I am very long VR over time but I think we are at the Palm Pilot stage not the iphone stage. Metaphors are not precise in these matters but perhaps that one is useful to you.

The input devices are a huge part of the story for VR and the 3d/VR wand controllers ie Oculus Touch and the Steam Lighthouse controllers are only in the hands of a few hundred people at this point.

We've had 2-3 years of tens of thousands of headsets but terrible input solutions so far.

That has produced shoddy demos and kiosk applications because of the lack of good input into the 3d environment.

Facebook is doubling down on this terribleness by going to mass consumer launch using xbox one controllers.

As others have mentioned, VR is transformative when the input solution fits.

Elite Dangerous with HOTAS controllers. Several driving games with steering wheels, Dirt Rally is great fun. Amazing experiences for more serious simulation games.

With proper 3d wands there are a number of new serious game types that will be very compelling but the content needs to be designed from scratch with VR input in mind.

As the serious creative applications (ie Blender or Maya3d, CAD/engineering,medical/science visualization, music etc.) actually get accurately tracked 3d wands I think we will see some transformative creation experiences.

After laying out vertexes in a properly designed VR application I think people won't go back, for example.

Trading desks and financial sectors probably have a lot of territory to explore as the screen pixel density improves.

TLDR; The money in VR is largely seeking AngryBirdsVR but I don't think that's going to happen soonish.

hammerandtongs··on Tell HN: I spend so much time solving problems I feel like giving up
Just get babel running without the webpack and modules gorp.

I thought it was all a mess too and wasted a few hours.

babel ./*js -s -w -d ../../target/

Move on to solving real problems with code.

I agree with your sentiment that you should try at least get es2015 going though.

Good luck.

hammerandtongs··on A CEO's Guide to Emacs
"time saving" and "without taking my fingers off the home row" is an extremely shallow view of why people pick emacs and org-mode as a major portion of their computational environment.

Broadly it's about creating a sort of fabric of textual context around your all of your personal and professional projects. It's about owning your tools as a professional.

Orgmode allows you to capture your thinking around a project in a way that's extremely adaptable to whatever structure you need.

You can create an outline of arbitrary depth with todo items, appointments, executable computation or latex.

There is literally no other environment available with that level of power.

Now even if you can assemble this from the bits of flavor of the month web services which of us will still be able to read and use our environment in 2 years? How about 25?

Cheers.

hammerandtongs··on Sct – set color temperature
Thanks for this.

Over the years I've decided the gradual adjustment lat/long bits are really a negative feature. It engineer cool but it's counterproductive to the goal.

I want the monitor dim between 7pm and 630am regardless of time of year so I cronned that into redshift.

Your body clock probably wants the full blue light in the am fwiw.

I'll give sct a try to see if its more pleasing to the eye.

hammerandtongs··on How I came to find Linux
Not at all unusual. I find OSX to be genuinely dreadful for stability and a 3rd class unix at best in its userspace.
hammerandtongs··on Vim: Takeaways from One Year of Typing
The goal is to be able to FLUENTLY edit text. Lowering the number of keystrokes can aid that but is ancillary.

Fluency comes after learning it well enough that you aren't thinking about it anymore.

Yes you should occasionally reevaluate where you are on that scale but I don't see that as what you are saying.

Enjoy your ide if you have it figured out to your satisfaction.

Cheers

hammerandtongs··on Vim: Takeaways from One Year of Typing
"""an editor that forces me to consciously think about text operations"""

"""I say this as a person that knows vim well."""

These two phrases don't go together.

Would you say you knew how to play a piano well if you were still consciously thinking about where each note was?

If you don't use vim to the level that it's subconscious and "in your fingers" it might not seem all that useful...

Fwiw "ag" and the various plugins around it make your use case pretty trivial.

hammerandtongs··on Show HN: CrushPaper – Open-Source Workflowy and Evernote for Writers, Students
It's difficult for me to give feedback as I'm too opinionated at some level (ie see my "computational document" comment). I'm also a grumpy vim/emacs diehard in general so your keybindings are never going to be to my taste.

Try to avoid the popup modal dialog boxes ie for creating a new note. Focus on fluid note editing within the document.

Alt+enter to end a note? What is the absolute most fluid way you can give the user to create a sibling?

hammerandtongs··on Show HN: CrushPaper – Open-Source Workflowy and Evernote for Writers, Students
For the particle cross section of -

outliner

org-tangle/org-babel, literate programming and/or http://www.howardism.org/Technical/Emacs/literate-devops.htm...

broadly exportable format

calendar/todo/personal information management

etc etc

I'm not aware of anything else that covers that territory.

However Xiki and IPython (Jupyter now) do have some of the aspects of the "computational document" that I think of in this broader context.

hammerandtongs··on Show HN: CrushPaper – Open-Source Workflowy and Evernote for Writers, Students
This whole area is very underserved in how people interact with their computers, glad to see people pushing at it.

You could do worse then really digging deep into emacs org-mode and learning it well.

It takes what you are doing to a much higher level but doesn't exist on the web yet.

Also (as mentioned elsewhere) get yourself up here https://demo.sandstorm.io/demo

hammerandtongs··on Show HN: CrushPaper – Open-Source Workflowy and Evernote for Writers, Students
Your project seems perfect for sandstorm.

The gap between "you can run your own server" and a one click install via sandstorm is profound.

hammerandtongs··on Looking Forward: Support for Secure Shell
With openvpn (which is just ssl) you can simply not respond when someone presents a bad key.

openssh always responds (unless I've missed a recent feature) thus exposing which port its listening on and that you sent a bad key.

The silent failure is preferable for this application.

Port knocking gives you a roughly equivalent layer.

hammerandtongs··on The defiant stand by Yanis Varoufakis in the E.U. economic negotiations
Your moralistic tone might be appropriate in a completely simplistic loan from one villager to another villager.

In the context of the very high complexity of the actual international system we have it doesn't really work or provide any explanatory power.

hammerandtongs··on Rare book experts join forces to stop tome raiders
A very ugly crime.

To me this also suggests that if you own or control one of these texts that its literally your duty to the rest of humanity to make sure it's scanned and available for free and infinite copying SOMEWHERE.

We might lose track of the digital version but without it it's inevitable that these volumes will decay and be lost forever.

What is the the general ethical stance about this in the rare book community?
