hamdingers··on Just Bury Your Trash
The cardboard isn't the problem, the plastic is. Looking at energy use of packaging alone is myopic as other comments in this thread have already pointed out.

I can go to a bulk store like re_grocery with my own reusable airtight container and buy fresh uncrushed cereal with zero packaging. This should be an option in every grocery store.

hamdingers··on 9000 RPM is faster than your screen refreshes
Your monitor refreshes a bit faster than my motorcycle. '09 Yamaha FZ6 14k redline, 240hz would be about 14,400 rpm.
hamdingers··on Just Bury Your Trash
Just let me buy things without forcing me to buy so much trash too. Every grocery store item is over-packaged.
hamdingers··on American Airlines' Legendary Mechanic Passes Away at 100 After 80-Year Career
It takes a rare multi-talented person to do this though. First you have to attain mastery of the craft itself, then you have to master (or at least be competent in) the art of communicating it to others.

Some mechanics are just good mechanics, and that's okay.

hamdingers··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
That's missing the point. There were official native MacOS builds and now there aren't.

Can't be too mad about it though, it was free back then too.

Do you never have agents working on multiple tasks in parallel? You'll become much more productive when you figure out how to stop micromanaging.
hamdingers··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
I have never had any interest in using Bambu's cloud. It works in LAN mode with none of this rigamarole.

If you want to feed all your print activity to Bambu's servers anyway, why bother using an open source plugin in the first place?

hamdingers··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
It's the networking plugin that talks to the printer over the network (while exporting gobs of telemetry to Bambu's servers).

Without the networking plugin you cannot monitor your printer or send prints to it remotely. You can copy files to a flash drive and print that way.

hamdingers··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
Probably this one: https://github.com/greghesp/ha-bambulab

It's excellent for monitoring and setting up automations around printer events, I use it all the time too.

hamdingers··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
I only sent one test print through Bambu so I can't make a comparison, but it's <10s from clicking print to the printer starting its warmup dance.

Speed is not why I set my printer up this way though. I live in a state that may ban 3D printers unless they include invasive surveillance, so I wanted to get a high end pre-ban printer in case that becomes law.

hamdingers··on An ongoing 3D-printer AGPL violation
For current owners who want to avoid Bambu's servers entirely, consider LAN mode with OrcaSlicer and this open source reverse engineered networking plugin: https://github.com/ClusterM/open-bamboo-networking

I have verified that my P2S in LAN mode never attempts to make external connections at all (blocked it anyway, of course) and OrcaSlicer + this plugin never attempts to connect to any of Bambu's servers.

My P2S is easily the best printer I've ever had, they really do make incredible machines, it's a shame they have created this ridiculous situation just to (as far as I can tell) collect telemetry.

hamdingers··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
Yes they do, but is it enough?

Given a fixed per-gallon gas tax, if you assume a 3000lb, 2 axle vehicle that gets 30mpg is paying enough road tax to cover its usage, then an 80,000lb, 5 axle vehicle would need to consume 320 gallons per mile to be paying gas tax proportionate to its road usage.

They don't (thankfully), so it's not. Trucks are massively subsidized by everyone else.

hamdingers··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I don't see how. Regardless of how you feel about the lawfulness of the overall situation, Tunick gave an agent false information which resulted in the phone being wiped. That's intent.

This requires no action whatsoever from the phone's owner, you could even be unconscious/dead and it would still work.

hamdingers··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
When I've gotten secondary screening the first thing they do is take all my belongings and rifle through them on a table. That seems to be standard practice and I'm sure it was step 1 in Tunick's ordeal.

Both approaches have situations they wouldn't work in. If you're extra paranoid you could do both.

hamdingers··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I was imagining only the BLE beacon living in one of those little faraday pouches people put their key fobs in. They should be pretty much transparent passing through the x-ray and a pouch with an airtag in it wouldn't raise any suspicion at all at the airport.

Only once you're getting invasively searched would they (ideally) dump the pouch out into the tray with your phone.

hamdingers··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Or keep it in a faraday bag and have the phone wipe if it sees it. If you're ever searched (or otherwise indisposed), they'll open the bag and wipe your phone for you.

Ah yeah, mine takes a while to connect to wifi too. I assumed that was just how it was, luckily I do it rarely.

I got the BW over the Color only because I had read the color screen wasn't as sharp, though I've never compared them side by side.

hamdingers··on Kobo can run apps now
What does the two-core CPU get you? I'm very satisfied with my BW with KOReader, haven't noticed any shortcomings but I only read books on it.
hamdingers··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
So because you use them to stealthily film your 2 year old, there's no way other people use them to stealthy film other people in less acceptable ways?

This confirms it, you're being deliberately obtuse.

hamdingers··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
But, critically to the conversation we're having, does not produce harmful particulates when it does so.
hamdingers··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
Good analogy. If there was a tool that could do everything a knife can do without being able to cut people, knives wouldn't be nearly as common and anyone who insisted on carrying one in public would be suspect. "I need it to cut vegetables," would not be a reasonable excuse, because there's an alternative.

There is an alternative to your stealthy camera glasses, which you are aware of, and your admitted use case for them is filming people who are unaware that you are filming. Yet you can't imagine other people use them for the same purpose? I'm trying to assume good faith but you're not making it easy.

hamdingers··on California's new tire efficiency rules could save drivers $1B a year
That's backwards, trucks are the cause of most road damage in the first place. Trucking companies should pay enormous fees to use the roads given the disproportionate amount of damage they do to them[1].

It should be cost prohibitive to use trucks for anything but local deliveries. Before you say "this will increase costs for consumers," recognize consumers are already paying for these roads.

May I introduce you to the steel wheel rolling on a steel rail?

hamdingers··on Meta Files Patent for Facial Recognition, Automatic Recording of People
> without making the phone camera an ever present intrusion while outdoors

You don't have to be constantly filming your kids, that's optional.

This is a cute spin, but what you're saying is "I like the glasses because I can film people without them knowing" it just happens the people in this case are (mostly) your children.

hamdingers··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
McDonalds was that and more first. They established the template that In-N-Out continues to follow, as anyone older than ~30 remembers.

McDonalds chose to aggressively enshittify, In-N-Out did not. You're probably right that McDonalds will never be that again, I don't think they even want to. If you cut minimum wage in half today, they'd keep the same staffing levels and the franchise owners would pocket the difference.

hamdingers··on I requested a copy of my data from McDonald’s loyalty program
> Don't underestimate the equally intense downward pressure on staffing that minimum-wage hikes have provided (for instance, in California).

In-N-Out allows us to discard this notion. They've maintained full staffing while simultaneously paying staff above-market rates (even in California). They only charge 30 cents more for a basic cheeseburger, and the burger is much higher quality, so even that is hard to attribute to wages.
