haltist··on Ask HN: How AI/ML can be applied to improve our phone usage habits?
You can use the same principles that Google and friends use to intervene on other behaviors. First you need data to make a model and then you use the model to optimize some metric. In this case it seems like you want to reduce screen time so the intervention in this case would be to lock out applications that seem like unproductive time sinks. Alternatively, you can look into developing better meta-cognitive skills and you don't need extra software for that other than spending some time every day meditating.

You don't even need AI for this. Just track application use and then gradually increase the lockout time for the top 3 applications.

How do you think ad targeting works? First google and friends build a model of your digital habits and then they figure out the best ways to intervene in the digital space with ads that you will click on. Same with Facebook. These companies make billions every day and that's because they are very effective at using AI (linear regression) to modify user behavior on a mass scale and increase revenue for the advertisers.
haltist··on Ask HN: Daily practices for building AI/ML skills?
LLMs can't do math but if someone pays me $80B then I can teach any LLM how to do arithmetic by first building an AGI.
haltist··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
Hopefully you get rich then and contribute to the inevitable AGI development.
haltist··on Technology to stop drunk drivers could be coming to every new car in the nation
The developments of the "panoptic computronium cathedral"™ could be accelerated if someone gave me $80B. Problems like drunk driving become a non-issue in my architecture and piecemeal deployments of sensors for preventing bad actions like drunk driving are automatically accounted for in my AGI architecture because everything is monitored 24/7 and no one does anything without permission from the AGI.
haltist··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
The changes are already in progress.
haltist··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
Indeed.
haltist··on Tacit Knowledge Is Dangerous
Intriguing possibility.
haltist··on Tacit Knowledge Is Dangerous
This is very much like my panoptic computronium cathedral™. I only need $80B to build it to achieve AGI. The AGI requires 24/7 surveillance for making optimal decisions because it needs access to as much information as possible. The second stage will require worshipers to ingest nanosensors so that even their bowel movements can be tracked and analyzed by the AGI. This is all for the benefit of those who are under constant surveillance in the cathedral.
haltist··on Ask HN: What are your predictions for 2024?
Everything will continue to get worse.
haltist··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
Anyway, good luck. I am certain the pursuit of profitable monetary value will create AGI so the more people there are who want to make more money the faster we will all get to the singularity. This is documented by Marc Andreesen in his manifesto so I know it is the right path.
haltist··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
Good luck chasing money, I'm sure it will work out for you. As a homeless member of the techno-optimism church I believe profit incentives and corporate institutions built for worshipping money will get humanity to the technological singularity and the merger of biology and silicon.
haltist··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
There is no money in creation. You can do with that what you will.
haltist··on Ask HN: Is ChatGPT making tech publishing obsolete?
AI doesn't make writing obsolete, it makes it even more important because human inputs are necessary for all existing systems.
haltist··on 16-year-old Looking For Guidance
Most things are not hard if you spend the time and effort to learn. I recommend Francois Chollet's book on AI. It has good reviews so it will help you learn the tools, techniques, and concepts in AI and ML.

If you can't afford to buy the book then there are online libraries like Anna's archive which should help you get a copy and then buy the book once you have a job and can afford to spend money on books.

haltist··on The Handbook of Artificial Intelligence
The Advanced Research Projects Agency of the Department of Defense and the Biotechnology Resources Program of the National Institutes of Health supported the Handbook project as part of their long-standing and continuing efforts to develop and disseminate the science and technology of AI. Earlier versions of Handbook material were distributed as technical reports of the Stanford Computer Science Department. The electronic text-preparation facilities available to Stanford computer scientists on the SAIL, SCORE, and SUMEX computers were used.
haltist··on Is Grok Basically Just an OpenAI Wrapper?
Ask it for the latest news on Hamas and Israel. What does Grok say about it using its root access to X.com?

The best use cases for Grok are going to be in advertising. Corporations that pay X.com a lot of money will get privileged access to Grok features for sentiment analysis and ad placement. Basically, the AI is going to optimize advertising revenue because real-time access to data will allow advertisers to optimize their targeting as quickly as Grok can manage to summarize the relevant metrics for impact of the current ad campaign. Advertising agencies are not dumb so I suspect they will start pivoting to using generative assets for their A/B testing and optimization which means that something like Grok with the proper generative plug-ins will let them do a lot more with a smaller team of marketing "creatives".

haltist··on Is Grok Basically Just an OpenAI Wrapper?
Unlike religion which is indisputable.
haltist··on Physicists unveil 10-year plan for exploring the quantum Universe
Let me guess, it requires a lot of money. Every time I read an article about physics research I lose respect for the field. They're always asking for more money and promising breakthroughs that just end up being disguised weapons research for the military-industrial complex.
haltist··on Ask HN: As tech companies scale bigger, they scale down customer support
Because customer support is a cost center and big tech is in the business of profits. It is common and accepted because everyone agrees that making money is a good idea. If you're a shareholder of big tech stock you want the profit graph going up and to the right because that means your stock is a valuable commodity that you can trade for more money than you bought it for. This is all econ 101.
haltist··on StableLM Zephyr 3B
You can do this by just following a tutorial: https://huggingface.co/docs/diffusers/main/en/using-diffuser.... ML/AI models are just function graphs and most of the frameworks support saving and loading safetensor serialized graphs.
haltist··on How many people does it take to keep a conspiracy alive?
Jesus only had 12 followers so not that many.
haltist··on Wikifunctions
It is a formalization of knowledge with formal expressions. One could say it is a formalization of knowledge with executable/computational semantics. WikiMedia is actually an AI company and that's why they are always asking for donations.
haltist··on Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank
Never had that but it sounds delicious.
haltist··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
In my architecture everyone is treated equally like an idiot so there are no haves and have not because the machine god treats all people the same and provides for all their needs within the "panoptic computronium cathedral"™.
haltist··on Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank
This is a great idea. Banking and social media are meant to be together like peanut butter and jelly.
haltist··on Virtual Machine as a core Android Primitive
You can inspect their hypervisor code and verify the host kernel can not access the VM after creation but if you are running as root then you can obviously inspect whatever process is under host/hypervisor control.
haltist··on Job openings fall in October, lowest since 2021
We are in a recession but I can solve this recession and all future ones for $80B.
haltist··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
No problem. Cool site, very minimalist.
haltist··on Ask HN: Why is it taken for granted that LLM models will keep improving?
They don't. They say things like "infinite resources for everyone" and "compute/electricity too cheap to meter" and so on and so forth. I have distilled the techno-optimist manifesto down to what it actually looks like in reality, i.e. a global panopticon that controls everything with algorithms.

Per usual, I can build this technological panopticon/utopia for a bargain price of $80B. Some people think it can be done for cheaper but they haven't spent as much time as I have on this problem. I have the architecture ready to go, all I need is the GPUs, cameras, microphones, speakers, and wireless data network. The software is the easy part but the panoptic infrastructure is what requires the most capital. The software/brain can be done for maybe $2B but it needs eyes, ears, and a mouth to actually be useful.

The second stage is building up the actuators to bypass people but once the panopticon is ready it won't be hard to build up the robot factories to enact the will of AGI directly via robots acting on the environment.
