halpert··on Scientists find there are 70% fewer pollinators, due to air pollution
This comment is misleading. As you quoted "when there were several common ground-level air pollutants present." Sure, the exact number may not be 70%, but this decrease is a common occurrence.
halpert··on 22-year-old builds chips in his parents’ garage
I never claimed it was. I was replying to a discussion on worker efficiency.

Is self-interested management really an inefficiency if it’s unavoidable? You don’t get to run a company in a vacuum. You have to run it within the bounds of human behavior. Saying that “if only all humans acted in some way against their nature, then the system would be more efficient” isn’t an effective management strategy.

Is it really proximity to the purse string? Because even large, profitable founder-led tech companies, where founders have full control and motive to run the company efficiently, adopt middle management. And what evidence is there that middle management is unnecessary? The only evidence presented is theoretical critiques from engineers who feel they stand to gain from the removal of management.

To me, this is a case to apply Occam’s razor. What is more likely, that this decades old, Dilbertesque criticism of management is true, yet somehow eluded the purview of shareholders? Or that businesses are being run in a relatively efficient manner given the current human condition?
halpert··on Ask HN: What is the best piece of advice someone has told you?
If you’re starting out your career as a surgeon, you really better hope you’re not the best surgeon in the room. People will die. Obviously there comes a point when you can’t grow any more and then it’s ok to be the smartest, but that’s hopefully after a long career filled with growth.

Then why don’t companies adopt a flatter structure with higher compensated engineers? The goal of a company is to make money after all. If management could be removed and top engineers retained with higher salaries, then a company would surely have an advantage in the marketplace. Since this doesn’t happen, there must be more to the picture than people in upper management simply clinging to their jobs. If removing middle management were so obvious a change to make, then shareholders would demand it.

Another piece of advice I’d give to a young person is that older people want protégés. Your ticket into the room is simply being smart, young, and impressionable.

Maybe “it’s not fair to have subordinates earn more” was the justification given to you, but businesses rarely make decisions based on what’s fair. Engineers are valuable, but individual engineers are largely replaceable. Being able to coordinate a large group successfully also has a lot of value.
halpert··on Bitcoin Price Falls Below $35,000 in Tandem with Stock Selloff
BTC is liquid. You can easily convert BTC to a currency of your choice on an exchange, similar to stocks. There is plenty of volume to meet demand. Tether solves the problem of tying on-chain things to the U.S. dollar, which exists off the blockchain.
halpert··on Golang’s most important feature is invisible
This type of synchronous code is most impressive to those who come from JavaScript where everything is clearly asynchronous. For instance, in Go you can read a file synchronously using os.ReadFile and it will generally be performant. In NodeJS, you need a callback to achieve the same result.
halpert··on Ant mill
Deride can mean to call something worthless. A mill, by definition, is worthless.
halpert··on Myths about cooking steak that need to go away (2013)
Have you tried just ordering your steaks medium rare? That's what I do, and I've never had the type of trouble you speak of ordering at steak houses in NYC.
halpert··on Myths about cooking steak that need to go away (2013)
Have you tried measuring your oven temp? Maybe it runs cold.
halpert··on Ask HN: What is the best piece of advice someone has told you?
I think the target audience of this type of advice should be young people beginning their careers. True domain experts likely don’t need advice like this. There does come a time when you reach your limit in terms of what you can learn. But young people hopefully haven’t reached that at the start of their careers.
halpert··on Ask HN: What is the best piece of advice someone has told you?
If you’re the smartest person in the room, then you’ve likely surrounded yourself with people “worse” than you in some way. How can you grow in such an environment? You want to surround yourself with people smarter than you so that you can learn from them and grow. So if you’re the smartest person in the room, then you should go find a new room with smarter people. Unless you’re the smartest person on earth of course ;)
halpert··on Ant mill
The same could be said to you about my comment :)
halpert··on Ask HN: What is the best piece of advice someone has told you?
That’s the opposite of advice I’d give to someone. If you’re the smartest in the room, then you’re in the wrong room.
halpert··on Ask HN: What is the best piece of advice someone has told you?
The best advice I received only applies to younger folks, but it was immensely helpful when starting my career. The advice was to look at those older than me in the workplace and to ask myself if that was the type of person I wanted to be when I get older. If the answer is no, then it’s probably a good time to leave.

Where do you get your food? What are you reading HN on? You’re making “working hard for a promotion” seem like a futile endeavor, and yet you likely sustain yourself and entertain yourself with the fruits of those working the jobs you deride.

This article is about an ant mill, which occurs when a group of ant’s start following a circular track of pheromones The ants think they’re heading towards the colony, but they’re not. What you describe as a “mill” is really just society, i.e. the ant colony. To me, it seems like you’re on the mill, following an idea that ultimately leads nowhere.

What does it mean the follow another human in this context? I went to the store today. I believe I did so by my own free will. I wasn’t aware of anyone else going to the store.
halpert··on Divorce in the rich world is getting less nasty
Alimony is not child support. Alimony is paid to the ex-spouse to maintain their lifestyle. You would need to pay child support in addition to the alimony.
halpert··on Ask HN: What's Up with Google?
I genuinely believe it's because the scraper sites have more Google ads on them compared to Wikipedia and Stack Overflow. The ad load on returned search results has reached astronomic proportions. I use uBlock on my laptop, but it's almost impossible to view search results on my phone.
halpert··on ‘Farms are failing’ as fertilizer prices drive up cost of food
Methane is needed to make hydrogen, which you can easily make from electricity and water. It’s just cheaper to make from methane so there aren’t facilities to make it using green energy.
halpert··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
And yet we outlaw plenty of things that have negative effects on society. And of course, our biggest trading partner (China) does not allow free market access to US companies. Don’t pretend this about some lofty ideal. It’s about profit, pure and simple.
halpert··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
The article mentions that clothing fell from 10% of the average US households budget to 2%. That sounds like efficiency to me, especially if more clothes are being purchased.
halpert··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
I’m not too familiar with hardware, but would you be able to differentiate between the unpressed state with such a scheme?
halpert··on Many clothing donations end up in African landfills
The weird part of this isn’t that fast fashion generates a lot of trash. Almost every part of the American lifestyle generates tons of waste. The strange part is that the US strong arms African countries into buying the “donated” garments from textile recyclers. I’ll be throwing my used garments directly into the landfill in the future.
halpert··on Open-Sourcing our Firmware
It looks like he keyboard state is read by the driver, rather than the keyboard sending the state to the OS. How would you denounce on a hardware level with such a setup?
