But that is not even the point -- when facebook invokes the nullification clauses in the patent grant, you're simply back to no patent grant, at all. How is having a patent grant not strictly better?

No, I'm not happy with that, but that is also not what's happening here. You're still welcome to sue Facebook if you want, but you'd lose all patent licensed to you in the PATENT file.

I'm also not happy with spreading FUD. Bringing up non-software patent is a strawman.

> A deeply arrogant and ignorant notion.

This sentence is quite arrogant in itself.

> If you think this was about FUD you really don't understand why people protest React as a core component inside WordPress.

Then please explain what this is about? Numerous other posts in this thread (including mine) have explained that you are strictly better off with the PATENT grant. I have yet to see a post that explains why this is bad without FUD.

As I replied above, this takes you to the same place without a patent grant.

Umm, no. You can still sue them, but the patent grant is nullified, which takes you back to the place where no such patent grant exists.

Hence, you're strictly better off with the grant.

I don't understand this: how are you not strictly better off with the patent grant? This whole fiasco seems to be nothing but FUD. See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14780979

tl;dr:

License with no patent grant: Facebook can sue you for infringing patents,
even if you are using a clone!
License with patent grant: Facebook cannot sue you for infringing patents,
    unless you do it first.

And now github is using the same license too :)

No, it is not. If you sue people with software patent, I’m happy you lose that ability.

But no one is saying you should use instant messaging or informal communication for everything. It's a tool, and it's good at certain roles, for example, a log that includes context for investigations into incidents.

For design docs, formal notifications, etc., there's still email and services like Quip. They are not mutually exclusive.

Having day to day discussions in informal channels and consolidating them into a more formal form of communication is a workflow I enjoy working with.
