hahn-kev··on GrapheneOS protections against data extraction from locked devices
Honestly, I feel like I'd be more suspicious of someone who had little to nothing installed on their phone.
hahn-kev··on Oh-my-pi: A coding agent with the IDE wired in
When I tried it, I kept trying to login with some accounts via OAUTH and they all said to only accept logins from their official tool, which makes me think using this with on of my subscriptions will get me banned.
hahn-kev··on My car’s OTA update broke Android Auto
Fair
hahn-kev··on My car’s OTA update broke Android Auto
You act like there's no benefit to the user either, plenty of software gets better because of updates shipped after the fact.
hahn-kev··on The bread paradox: why convenience always wins, and why SaaS isn't doomed
Integrations are good. But most people don't need ALL integrations, there's just a couple that are show stoppers, and even then it probably doesn't integrate how you want it to. I think the future is a platform with a good data model that people can vibe code plugins on top of.
hahn-kev··on Tiny data centre used to heat public swimming pool
> The heat generated by a washing-machine-sized data centre is being used to heat a Devon public swimming pool.

You mean server.

hahn-kev··on Markdy: Like Mermaid Diagrams, but for Motion
Hey at least it's not AI
hahn-kev··on Linux eliminates the strncpy API after six years of work, 360 patches
Couldn't they at least give them better names?
hahn-kev··on If you are asking for human attention, demonstrate human effort
The malicious answer would be to prompt inject your coworker.
hahn-kev··on Twenty One Zero-Days in FFmpeg
I use it in WASM on the client and call it a day. It works for our use case, but obviously not most.
hahn-kev··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
Reading through that list. None of those were breakthroughs when they first came out. It took time, in some cases a long time for them to become good.
hahn-kev··on .NET (OK, C#) finally gets union types
They do this often actually. They will likely watch how people use it and tailor the design to fix that.

As for performance, in lots of use cases it's not going to be a big deal. If you are super sensitive to performance issues then you can just wait, meanwhile everyone else gets to use the new feature. You have to start somewhere and waiting to satisfy everything usually ends up with doing nothing

hahn-kev··on .NET (OK, C#) finally gets union types
It always boxes them TODAY. Lately the team has been releasing an MVP and improving stuff (like perf) later on. I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same thing here, as noted in the article you can already work around that yourself.
hahn-kev··on .NET (OK, C#) gets union types
I'm glad to finally see this making it's way into C#. Not so much because I want to use unions purely in C#. But because I want to be able to define them when interfacing with other languages.
hahn-kev··on GitHub confirms breach of 3,800 repos via malicious VSCode extension
Sadly the LSP pattern means that most extensions launch their own process so there's limited sandboxing options there. Sure not every extension needs its own process, but if most of them do then there's very limited benefit from permissions or sandboxing. As nice as the LSP is, the design basically means any IDE wanting to use common ones need to let extensions include and start their own processes.
hahn-kev··on OpenAI is connecting ChatGPT to bank accounts via Plaid
That's not how it worked last time I used it with Chase Bank. It used something like Oauth with my bank where I logged in on my bank website and asked what accounts I wanted to share with Plaid.
hahn-kev··on Moving away from Tailwind, and learning to structure my CSS
I always feel like the distinction between interference and document is missing in these types of discussions. Often times they're as different as native vs web dev and if you don't realize that then you're arguing about totally different things and nothing will make sense.
hahn-kev··on I didn't think I could get addicted to weed. I was wrong – and I'm not alone
Dose, frequency and role. Exactly like alcohol.
hahn-kev··on Valve releases Steam Controller CAD files under Creative Commons license
But they're not drivers included with steam. In order for it to work you must launch the game through steam.
hahn-kev··on Agentic Coding Is a Trap
Vertical integration is valuable at many different scales
hahn-kev··on GitHub CLI now collects pseudoanonymous telemetry
Isn't the gh CLI useless if it can't connect to GitHub.com? Or does it work with enterprise GitHub and that's the use case you're talking about.
hahn-kev··on The dangers of California's legislation to censor 3D printing
To be fair that's more or less how we prevent printers from printing counterfeit money.
hahn-kev··on Rescuing old printers with an in-browser Linux VM bridged to WebUSB over USB/IP
This is pretty cool! Thanks for sharing.
hahn-kev··on Post Mortem: axios NPM supply chain compromise
If you're paid then sure. Otherwise... It depends.
hahn-kev··on ‘Energy independence feels practical’: Europeans building mini solar farms
The grid doesn't need to be down, your solar just needs to produce more than you're using.
hahn-kev··on Data centers are transitioning from AC to DC
It's called USB power delivery
hahn-kev··on Project Nomad – Knowledge That Never Goes Offline
Yeah that's a very strange choice.
hahn-kev··on Retailer denies memory replacement due to 4x increase in DDR5 pricing
D: give them money at the original price of the ram.
hahn-kev··on Nanny state discovers Linux, demands it check kids' IDs before booting
You could argue that we have security licenses (eg SOC 2), however I don't think it actually succeeds in making software safe. I think software is hard because unlike a bridge, which is built with limited scope and the risk is known when it's designed, software grows to become load bearing without us really realizing it. Eg CrowdStrike, I never would have assumed that an outage could affect so much of the world.
hahn-kev··on MonoGame: A .NET framework for making cross-platform games
Dev tools in the browser are a direct editor, sure you can't drag things around with the mouse, but you can edit values live and see them change. Big difference from recompiling to see changes.
