hackmiester··on FindMyCat – Open-Source Pet Tracker
I definitely think it’s inexcusable that the control center buttons are so misleading, but at least “Hey Siri, turn off Bluetooth” (or Wi-Fi) really does it.
hackmiester··on Chromebooks will get 10 years of automatic updates
How does this look like Apple? Google is far worse about obsolescence than Apple, and, afaik, always has been.
hackmiester··on Square is down
Everything of theirs is down. Not just the registers. I only use it to invoice my contract customers and I can't even do that right now.
hackmiester··on NSO group iPhone zero-click, zero-day exploit captured in the wild
You don't have to use iCloud Backup.
hackmiester··on Clean mount lists in Linux
If it's possible to include (rather than exclude), you can:

    $ df /dev/sda1 /dev/nvme0n1p1
And get only those file systems.
hackmiester··on Google Maps is a critical dependency for nutrition facts on mcdonalds.com
And yet if you want your app to be listed on the iPhone App Store, it must be equally functional if the user denies location. So, I always do it, and have no problems, although sometimes it is slightly more annoying to use the app.
hackmiester··on I only lost 10 minutes of data, thanks to ZFS
Because of this, I always buy a different brand as well.
hackmiester··on ZFSBootMenu
This does work inside of rEFInd, which can load a kernel EFI blob directly, and supply it args.
hackmiester··on Speed Test
I was about to bring up T-Mobile because fast.com shows AWFUL results for me, revealing that T-Mobile is in fact throttling Netflix.
hackmiester··on Some tactics for writing in public
> I think I didn’t mention -n in that post because at the time I didn’t know why the -n flag was useful (it’s useful because it turns off this annoying reverse DNS lookup that tcpdump does by default so you can see the IP addresses).

Meanwhile, I remove -n from all tcpdump commands, because we use hostnames all the time at work, and I can remember them, and I can't remember a bunch of numbers.

hackmiester··on A list of recent hostile moves by Google's Chrome team
I have chrome installed and just cast my screen, minimize it and keep using firefox. I also don’t own any chromecast devices anymore, so this only really comes up at Airbnbs, the odd meeting room, etc.

I’ve heard you can do the same with Brave.

hackmiester··on Got called to a professor’s office after a complaint his SPARC4 was running slow
I last did this in about 2011-2012 and was shocked and/or pleased to discover many images on my friend's Xbox 360 dashboard turning upside down!!
hackmiester··on Changing the Android captive portal page (2020)
Yes of course. Most devices on the Internet don't have IPv4 addresses.
hackmiester··on 40 years ago yesterday Air Canada Flight 143 ran out of fuel mid-flight
If so, the pilot would have done better to keep his mouth shut. Why the hell would someone say that to a bunch of passengers who are presumably totally untrained in aviation?
hackmiester··on Target's EasySweep – Simplifying Skimmer Detection
[first bit removed because I was wrong]

I imagine it is possible to do something wrong at the processor to make this not work, due to the device card number shenanigans you mention. But, are there really still processors who still do it wrong? The device card number is associated at the issuing bank, not at the processor (unless I am missing something).

hackmiester··on Changing the Android captive portal page (2020)
I guess that is true, but the IP address space today is so large as to be unscannable. Practically speaking, you have to have some evidence that some host is there before you can start prodding at that host.
hackmiester··on Target's EasySweep – Simplifying Skimmer Detection
You don't have to have an agreement with Apple or Google to accept Apple Pay or Google Pay. If the customer holds a Visa then the phone presents a Visa to the reader. There is no special thing you have to do to accept those payments.
hackmiester··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
No, no need for a warrant. If the cops ask nicely (as opposed to making a demand), and the provider provides the info, there was no need for a warrant. That is the common process today.
hackmiester··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
It won't shut it down. The cops aren't compelling or pressuring the providers to give the info. They're just doing it.
hackmiester··on France passes bill to allow police remotely activate phone camera, microphone
Sure, that seems like something that could happen. However, meanwhile, in practice, my friend was having a mental break and the cops narrowed my friend's location down to 3 possible houses in a neighborhood.
hackmiester··on Dear Ubuntu
On Linux I expect one command to install the app. I don't want to download anything, use a web browser, or anything else.
hackmiester··on Building a Raspberry Pi based ultrasound imaging development platform
I have moved to NanoPi. Raspberry Pi is dead to me after years of indifference toward the hobbyist and small business sectors.
hackmiester··on Dear Ubuntu
I'm sorry but that is pretty awful. If I wanted to do all that, I'd run Windows.
hackmiester··on Dear Ubuntu
Sure. I got seamlessly migrated from X as well, when I upgraded my Debian major release. I am not "that kind of hacker" anymore (hence running GNOME), so I was OK with this. Didn't even notice the change for a while.
hackmiester··on Dear Ubuntu
Fedora does that.
hackmiester··on The networkQuality tool on macOS
That surely makes a bit of difference. But, I corroborate the ideas about the clients' differing abilities as well.

We run Microsoft and Apple workstations at work, but for Wi-Fi planning reasons, we keep some cheap laptops around as well. If we only test with our good machines, some issues will be invisible to us. And since I am in higher ed, many students cannot afford the high end computers, but they still need the service to work, so we have to test with cheap computers with terrible Wi-Fi chips, which reveals issues that are invisible to the latest Macs/Surface Pro machines.

hackmiester··on Apple wins antitrust court battle with Epic Games, appeals court rules
Let's not let that get in the way of a snippy sarcastic comment though... ;)
hackmiester··on Windows on Btrfs
I would say yes, but I'm not pushing it exceptionally hard. I would say it makes a good default unless/until you run into a problem with it.
hackmiester··on Windows on Btrfs
I haven't stubbed my toe on the former yet, but I agree it's not great. I'm mainly storing media, photos, etc. (relatively not compressible) so the latter doesn't matter much to me. I think that's probably a common use case for a drive you can read anywhere, so I still like ExFAT for that, generally speaking.
hackmiester··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
This literally happened to me and is the reason I no longer use Authenticator. Everything else on my entire phone restored, but not Authenticator.
