This post and the attention it garnered will bring him more customers than he'd hoped for (customers who will think about what he said, and maybe pitch in that dollar). Whether it was intentional or not, it's a clever marketing ploy I find.
Probably off topic, but the deadline point struck me most about the video. I'm a firm believer in self-directed learning, but I must admit that one of the benefits of having an overarching system that pushes you to deliver on time, such as school or a boss, can also have its benefits in setting the deadlines for you (and enforcing them). It takes a great amount of self-discipline to stick to one's own deadlines.
The people you asked aren't the skeptics. I'm sure almost everyone that commented here is aware that RIM is Canadian. (It's HN after all...) But yeah I get your point.
Thanks matomesc. What tends to happen is that I end up dedicating all my efforts and energy to excelling at work, leaving me no time for my personal projects (or very little at least). The kind of projects I wish to undertake will require a full commitment.
