hackerboos··on Show HN: Store.js v2.0 – Cross-browser storage for all use cases
JSON.stringify/JSON.parse before getting/setting from localstorage.

The other requirements localstorage alone can't address.

hackerboos··on Show HN: Store.js v2.0 – Cross-browser storage for all use cases
Personally, I wouldn't use a library at all unless I had to support IE<8. Localstorage is supported enough across browsers:

hackerboos··on UK government considering a “cut-off date” for EU citizens’ rights to residency
They're not violating the treaties, they are saying if EU citizens come after a certain date then their residency is not guaranteed.

EU citizens will be free to come right up until the UK exits the EU but those that came after said date will likely have to apply for visas. Those before will keep residency.

hackerboos··on UK government considering a “cut-off date” for EU citizens’ rights to residency
Here's the same headline from the Britain's pro-Conservative paper the Telegraph:

"Theresa May poised to announce end of free movement for new EU migrants next month"

I'm at $95k Canadian. These threads make me feel bad.
hackerboos··on RIP LivingSocial: The fast rise and slow demise of a daily deals company
A monopoly on “an industry that doesn’t really exist” - citing the article.
hackerboos··on RIP LivingSocial: The fast rise and slow demise of a daily deals company
You think a company that was using SHA1 [0] to hash passwords was actually logging IP addresses?

hackerboos··on Buffett Assails Money-Manager Fees as Berkshire Reports Profit Rise
Which Vanguard index did he buy into?
hackerboos··on The Programming Interview from Hell
At what point do we just take someone out of high school and teach them to program?
hackerboos··on The Programming Interview from Hell
Knowing of data structures is more important IMO. The hoops I've seen people jump through in code because they don't know about sets.
hackerboos··on Reflecting on one very, very strange year at Uber
That 50-70% is a loss leader for Uber. Did you read the post of their financials? They are hemorrhaging money.

hackerboos··on $5 Showdown: Linode vs. DigitalOcean vs. Amazon Lightsail vs. Vultr
According to the forums they weren't working on this as late as August 2016.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: What are some books where the reader learns by building one project?
I know India's a big place but it's a bit of a coincidence that you and the author are from the same city ;)
hackerboos··on Discovering Anomalies in Real-Time with Apache Flink
"The Apache Flink project is a relative newcomer to the stream-processing space. Competing Open-Source platforms include Apache Spark, Apache Storm, and Twitter Heron."

Can someone explain why Apache are creating projects that compete with each other? Why not focus on one?

hackerboos··on How to get rich in America
That's a fair point.

Average earnings of Canada's 1% - $358,238 USD - http://globalnews.ca/news/3079173/heres-how-much-canadas-top...

Average earnings of US's 1% - $1,153,298 USD - http://www.mlive.com/news/index.ssf/2016/08/see_the_average_...

Couldn't find averages for the poorest but Canada's bottom 20% is 0-13,223 USD - http://www.moneysense.ca/save/financial-planning/the-all-can...

America's bottom 20% 0-18,500 USD (US Census Bureau, 2006; income statistics for the year 2005)

Looking at raw numbers skips over a lot of things such as healthcare and education. You're probably better off being poor in Canada and rich in the US.

hackerboos··on How to get rich in America
Handouts from America's thread-bare welfare system?

You should really listen to the show from RadioLab. NPR's On The Media aired some of it too.

hackerboos··on The Basics: Kubernetes, Mesosphere, and Docker Swarm
They both support Heroku-like buildpacks. Major difference IMO is that Flynn supports databases and other stateful services.

I evaluated Flynn, Deis and Dokku and wasn't entirely satisfied with any of them opting for Heroku instead.

I've promised people a blogpost on this and I will do it once I get time to evaluate RancherOS too.

hackerboos··on GitHub commit search: “remove password”
Yes.
hackerboos··on GitHub commit search: “remove password”
Some of these commits are PGP signed...
hackerboos··on High-Memory Instances and $5 Linodes
OVH basically tell you not to use these for production applications. I have 3 that I use for as gitlab-runners and as a dokku development server.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Does a viable alternative to ScreenHero exist?
There's a shutdown notice on their homepage...

hackerboos··on London’s Lonely Unicorn: Two Frugal Expats and Their Billion-Dollar Startup
Only for large amounts of money. I'm sending roughly $2000 in each transaction.
hackerboos··on London’s Lonely Unicorn: Two Frugal Expats and Their Billion-Dollar Startup
I use them every two weeks to move Canadian dollars to British pounds.

Nobody else comes close in terms of exchange rates and level of service.

hackerboos··on How Elixir helped Bleacher Report handle 8x more traffic
Also not many jobs. I've been looking for an Elixir job in Canada for months.
hackerboos··on How Elixir helped Bleacher Report handle 8x more traffic
Elixir hasn't gone through the usual hype phases because it's just syntactical sugar, less boilerplate and more modern than Erlang making it more palatable for Ruby/Python devs.

The BEAM VM is what makes all this possible and the BEAM VM has been around for decades.

hackerboos··on Container orchestration: Moving from fleet to Kubernetes
Yeah. Forgot to mention I had Docker for Mac already installed.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Why do companies outside the US pay so much less?
I'm guessing you don't get 6 weeks vacation either.
hackerboos··on Container orchestration: Moving from fleet to Kubernetes
brew cask install minikube

brew install kubectl

Then follow the tutorial https://github.com/kubernetes/minikube#quickstart
