hackerboos··on AlphaBay, the Largest Online 'Dark Market,' Shut Down
AB didn't send emails. At least not in the last 12 months.
hackerboos··on AlphaBay, the Largest Online 'Dark Market,' Shut Down
Not having an extradition treaty doesn't mean you won't be deported.
hackerboos··on AlphaBay, the Largest Online 'Dark Market,' Shut Down
Wow it was up last night.

Are Tor hidden services compromised?

hackerboos··on Things to learn in React before using Redux
My bad it's a "patent rider". I should know better.
hackerboos··on AlphaBay, the Largest Online 'Dark Market,' Shut Down
Hansa has already taken AB's place.
hackerboos··on Things to learn in React before using Redux
How does Preact not violate React's patent if it's a drop in library?
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Should a solo developer use AWS for his public side project?
I used to be like OP. Trying to save as much money as possible hosting with OVH or Linode and provisioning my own servers.

Then my projects would die because I spent far more time doing this than writing application business logic. The classic "solving scaling problems with zero customers".

Heroku is expensive when you have scaling issues, but until then, it's $7 a month with the free Postgres and Redis options...

hackerboos··on Ask HN: Coping with Loneliness
Thailand's a notoriously conservative country despite its international reputation.

Far more likely to get chatted up in the West than there.

hackerboos··on UK has best health system in developed world, US analysis concludes
France ranks higher in some studies. I did a lot of personal research after "Sicko" the movie was released.
hackerboos··on Toward Go 2
I think 1.8 addressed the issue.

hackerboos··on Your own company? You can do it (2011)
Even in countries with 'universal' healthcare like Ontario, you still have to cover drug costs and dental yourself. Which can be really expensive.

This has even made me think about relocating back to the UK or Ireland before trying to start a business.

hackerboos··on Apple's 2TB iCloud plan will only cost $10 a month
Reads are really slow. Thumbnail previews take ages to load.
hackerboos··on Apple's 2TB iCloud plan will only cost $10 a month
ACD involves dumping all your data into one folder. iCloud has better integration with OSX.
hackerboos··on Open sourcing the Firebase SDKs
Until this[1] is fixed I'm not sure that Firebase would meet my needs for many projects. It's such a fundamental requirement to be able to query multiple fields without creating a mess of permutations of each field.

hackerboos··on Proton.B: What this Mac malware does
You run it against the DMG not the app.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Startup outside the US
Yeah 'dependent agent' in HMRC's guidelines would cover a group of UK based founders launching an LLC from the UK.

So you can certainly open an LLC from the UK but you'll be liable for UK Corporation Tax so I'm not 100% wrong.

I should clarify my previous statement. You can, of course, incorporate anywhere you like from the UK but HMRC will just ignore the fact you have incorporated abroad and tax you as if you were a UK corporation.

hackerboos··on Ask HN: Startup outside the US
Depends if they see it as a vehicle for tax avoidance.
hackerboos··on Canadians on TN Visas: What's your plan when the US withdraws from NAFTA?
Trump has stated that he is no longer withdrawing.

hackerboos··on Ask HN: Startup outside the US
Will HMRC even let you direct a US company from the UK?
hackerboos··on Bangkok plans to ban all street food by year′s end
Same same but different.
hackerboos··on Bangkok plans to ban all street food by year′s end
Sukhumvit, Silom, Ratchawithi etc.
hackerboos··on UK Prime Minister Theresa May announces intention to hold general election
The great thing about a GE is that the media forgets about the election expenses scandal.

Only those of us that follow Michael Crick on Twitter are kept up to date.

hackerboos··on Apple's cash hoard swells to $246B
Actually, most countries do this.

Don't confuse the taxes levied on a US citizen's income when living abroad with Apple's situation.

Apple is a US corporation.

hackerboos··on Banks scramble to fix old systems as IT 'cowboys' ride into sunset
We have 50,000 lines of RPG code we need to replace over the next decade. Since the last RPG dev at our company is over 65 years old and can retire at any moment.

It's going to be funny when we replace it with Java and our business guys ask why it runs much slower.

hackerboos··on Ask HN: How much do you make?
Toronto: $94,000 CAD and 5-10% bonus. Pension is matched 13% defined benefit plan.
hackerboos··on Ask HN: Would you move to DigitalOcean if they offered a managed DB service?
Yes but there are guys doing this and it's pretty expensive (hobby instance is cheap but then a major jump to next level).

hackerboos··on Why I will not exercise my GitLab stock options
Doesn't inspire confidence in the platform...
hackerboos··on The Mac Pro Lives
I've built one before. Updates involved losing sound. To get it back run an installer and restart.

Odd kernel panics used to happen once every 3 months. Black text would scroll down the screen and you have to hard reset the system.

I would keep a legit backup around but the power/price ratio cannot be beat. I'm looking at building another soon.

hackerboos··on WhatsApp accused of giving terrorists 'a secret place to hide'
Amber Rudd the UK's Home Secretary was on the BBC today requesting a backdoor be placed into Whatsapp so they can access messages in an event like this.

hackerboos··on Gitlab 9.0
That's how I exported all my private Github projects and cancelled my pro account.
