haarts··on Crystal 1.2.0
Windows support is an active area of focus but not there yet.
haarts··on MoonHome: Remote Development Environment
I've been doing a lot of this lately. I got the cheapest Macbook Air and SSH into my machine at the office. Tmux attach and go! Lag is never an issue for me. I could get used to this.
haarts··on What's the best SaaS starter kit?
+1 for Jumpstart. I really like it is kept up to date. It also has a forum which is relatively active. Other do not have this.

I considered this too: https://www.getsjabloon.com/.

haarts··on Ferrofluid display cell Bluetooth speaker
Ferrofluid is unstable iirc. I wonder how long this fluid lasts.
haarts··on We may soon have city-spanning 900 MHz mesh networks
What would you use it for? Some IoT project?
haarts··on Bitcoin and other PoW coins are an ESG nightmare
A Dyson cloud is a similar mega structure but not a continuous surface. I think it is more commonly referred to as a Dyson swarm. Isaac Arthur [0] had an episode about it in which he mentioned such a structure to be quite feasible with modern day technology.

haarts··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Best to tone it down a bit. One man's legit food isn't necessarily the others. No one is forcing you to put anything in your own mouth.
haarts··on Graphical User Interface Using Flutter in Embedded Systems [pdf]
The state management is THE headache of Flutter IMO. There are many options now and I expect Google is following this development closely. Sooner or later they'll either endorse a solution or come up with something better.
haarts··on New Features in the Fish Shell
Holy smokes! I've gotten used to the `env` prefix but this is what kept going wrong for me. Thanks for the tip!
haarts··on Handshake – A Namespace for the Decentralized Web
The one with the most hashing power. Just like Bitcoin.
haarts··on Show HN: LCC – Open-Source Spatial Audio from Stereo Speakers
For a layman: what does this do? How is this useful for me?
haarts··on Blur Tools for Signal
Think of it this way; there is less information in a blurred image (less colour, less lines, less areas). You can not* conjure information out of thin air thus making the unblurred image.

* Recent advances in AI actually make this possible to an extend. The AI delves into it's massive memory and extrapolates a likely image/face.

haarts··on Paper Clay Air Humidifier
Which company? I'm interested in these sensors.
haarts··on James Lovelock: 'I Would Not Waste My Fortune on Colonizing Mars'
Going to Mars won't save us from a gamma ray burst either. Not sure what you mean by red dwarf but I take it that you mean an event on the scale of a gamma ray burst. Mars ain't good enough for that.

I'd be curious to hear about events which would wipe out Earth and the moon but leave Mars intact.

haarts··on Amazon, Apple, Google, and the Zigbee Alliance to develop connectivity standard
I think Zigbee is in the uptick. Philips Hue works with it. Ikea is aggressively pushing products. There is (was? website recently went down, perhaps it has something to do with this announcement) DotDot (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZigBee#Cluster_Library) based on Thread. Which is used by Nest/Google.
haarts··on Hornet: High-Speed Onion Routing at the Network Layer
Is there a way to find papers citing the original?
haarts··on The V language now compiles itself in 0.09 seconds
You did pick a (very) pre 1.0 language to play with. Constant change is to be expected.

I wonder (and hope!) V lives up to the hype. It's a lot.

haarts··on Insect Apocalypse German Bug Watchers Sound Alarm
I'm surprised to read no one seems to know what to do about this. There's a simple thing you can do and that is buying organic produce. Sure, it still uses some pesticides but not all and a lot less (at least in Europe, not sure about the US).
haarts··on What is the role of meat in a healthy diet?
The fact that you eat eggs/dairy doesn't invalidate the entire exercise. Cutting meat out of your diet reduces animal cruelty significantly. While going all the way is better from an animal cruelty perspective there are other factors to consider (going all vegan is hard).
haarts··on ChaCha20-Poly1305 with long nonces – OpenSSL CVE-2019-1543
Genuine question; I wonder why OpenSSL deviates from the spec by allowing anything other than a 96 bit nonce.
haarts··on Disco: Modern Session Encryption [pdf]
This doesn't appear to be only a research project, there are two implementations already. One in Go (https://www.discocrypto.com/) and one in C (https://github.com/mimoo/disco-c).
haarts··on A new free-software forge: sr.ht
I do not know what invisible vowels I could add to make me remember this.
haarts··on Astronauts escape malfunctioning Soyuz rocket
They might have been swapping out parts for cheaper ones: https://arstechnica.com/science/2017/01/russia-recalling-doz...
haarts··on Nim 0.19
I'm glad to see that ICO money is put to good use! I'm genuinely excited for the future of Nim. Keep it up!
haarts··on Nim 0.19
Who is funding the development of Nim?
haarts··on Machine learning can run on tiny, low-power chips
There is the exception of https://snips.ai/.

I think that offloading the processing is not functionally required, but having the data is valuable for the big corps.

haarts··on Caddy 0.10 Released
They mention that 'Default Timeouts' have been disabled. Urging users to 'Act according to your threat model!'.

I'm not sure I understand. How is not having these timeouts a security thread? Someone could potentially open up enough HTTP connections to starve others from having the opportunity to do so?

haarts··on Announcing DatHTTPD
I've discussed this at some point in the IPFS IRC channel.

Their line of reasoning was that you could just as easily host encrypted blobs on IPFS and be done with it. That somewhat appeals to me, encryption of content seems orthogonal to hosting it. It feels like the Unix dogma 'do one thing and do it well'.

haarts··on Space Buckets: DIY Indoor Gardening with LED and Arduinos
Have you documented your endeavors somewhere? I'd be interested.
