guzfip··on Smoking ban for people born after 2008 in the UK agreed
> Someone drinking near you does not impact your health.

Hah, alcoholics have done more damage to my life than a smoker could ever dream of.

guzfip··on John Ternus to become Apple CEO
> I wonder how he climbed up the ranks of hardware engineering with a degree in mechanical engineering. Quite amazing.

Given the level of mathematics I’ve seen involved in hardware, I’d assume the average mech eng. has a better chance than the average software eng.

guzfip··on Ask HN: How did you land your first projects as a solo engineer/consultant?
This seems all good and well 10 years ago, but how well does this survive when the actual SMEs can just use LLMs to achieve the same effect? Those are the sort of platforms going all in on that stuff.
guzfip··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
These foreign agitprop accounts have gotten so ridiculous lol.
guzfip··on Ask HN: How did you land your first projects as a solo engineer/consultant?
How? This is what I never understood. Every domain expert I’ve ever knowing is because they’ve already I can spend all the time I have reading and toying around in a subject, but until I have real concrete experience to guide me, it’s usually pretty difficult to become an “expert” in anything. I know how to become an advanced hobbyist, but thats never in my life translated to someone being willing to pay me over say, and already established expert
guzfip··on The seven programming ur-languages (2022)
Make sure to let it pull in as many npm dependencies as it can.
guzfip··on NIST scientists create 'any wavelength' lasers
Very cool stuff. I regret wasting my life in software when I see other fields still doing interesting work.
guzfip··on I’m spending months coding the old way
OP is a known autist who goes around and does this between HN and Reddit
guzfip··on Congress extends controversial surveillance powers for 10 days
They’re really trying to replace him with that lizard man though. A lot of dementia patients in that state seem to want him gone.
guzfip··on U.S. to Create High-Tech Manufacturing Zone in Philippines
Good news is we’re starting to the public detest this unholy alliance across the political spectrum.

Unfortunately most real power in this country is tied up with decrepit geezers who have no values beyond engorging themselves on everything they can.

guzfip··on U.S. to Create High-Tech Manufacturing Zone in Philippines
I only saw the first four letters of the location initially and clicked because I was certain it was Philadelphia
guzfip··on The future of everything is lies, I guess: Where do we go from here?
Nature values intelligence and strength. Some, like OP may have the latter but lacks the former. I call that a tool.
guzfip··on US Bill Mandates On-Device Age Verification
> they can come up with Thanos' idea of wiping out 50% of the population and politicians would do it as long as Zuckerberg or anyone else in the techno bubble asked for it.

Stay tuned. With mass unemployment/underemployment there’s gonna a be a lot of “extra” people.

guzfip··on US Bill Mandates On-Device Age Verification
> In person, we expect stores won't sell cigarettes to kids. We should simply expect companies won't provide age restricted services to kids.

Stores won’t sell cigarettes to kids because doing that will probably get you arrested and shut down pretty quickly.

guzfip··on Codex for almost everything
Also why there’s so much enthusiasm for it on HN
guzfip··on Germany suspends military approval for long stays abroad for men under 45
> Because it seems that for being so obsessed to be prepared for war the only ones affected are the working class. The rich are just wasting resources away like if there was no tomorrow

In the US it was very fascinating to see the reaction to the Iran conflict. A bunch of geriatric pedowood actors and actual Epstein associates were seething that young men in general across the political spectrum who do not want to die in a pointless war of nothing in some god forsaken desert again.

guzfip··on Has the Era of the Mega-Layoff Arrived?
> it meant extreme right and extreme left parties dominated and moderates less so.

Don’t worry, we’re getting there.

guzfip··on Google broke its promise to me – now ICE has my data
I might as well write my own name in at that point.
guzfip··on Where did my taxes go?
Why will they stop lending? The US government could ably wipe them and their entire family and replace it with a more cooperative lender. There’s no higher authority to enforce anything.
guzfip··on Snap Is Laying Off 16% of Full-Time Staff as It Embraces A.I
How will this affect the pedophile userbase of the all?
guzfip··on The Future of Everything Is Lies, I Guess: New Jobs
> It's why I just can't understand the mindset of software engineers who are giddy about this brave new world. There really is nothing special about your expertise that an LLM can't achieve, theoretically.

They’re stupid or they’re already set up for success. The general ideas seems to be generalists are screwed, domain experts will be fine.

guzfip··on Civilization Is Not the Default. Violence Is
The problem with most anti-liberals is that they seem to be exclusively lunatics.

The one exception seems to be Europeans catholic monarchists. I’ve found those people to be surprisingly rational in a world dominated by low IQ populism.

guzfip··on Claude may require identity verification in some cases
Yes, today’s kids should instead learn to be influencers.

This is genuine advice I’ve seen from high profile business types. We’re fucked in the sense our children will be made to be attention whores online.

guzfip··on The Death of an AI Whistleblower
> We all know the movies where the big bad corporate CEO tells his chief of security to get rid of the whistleblower/journalist, but if you look at the plausibility of actually pulling this off unnoticed, in someone’s home, in the middle of the city, it makes it very unlikely.

Idk man, if you had told me a some years back a cabal of the most powerful men in the world including business leaders, politicians, etc. were all connected to a global human trafficking pedophile ring id have said you’re a schizophrenic or watch too many movies.

Then it happened.

guzfip··on Ask HN: Are Web Agencies Cooked?
I thought they all pivoted to social media service/consulting and marketing firms years ago.
guzfip··on Trusted access for the next era of cyber defense
More like they realized how much money they were wasting letting the proles generate slop and vibe code the same CRUD app they rewrote in 5 different JavaScript frameworks a few years back.

The money is in enterprise and government. The consumer market doesn’t remotely pay enough. It’s just the same story with Microsoft purposely making Windows an unusable mess because that’s not where they make their money. It was good to establish themselves, but that market is getting dumped.

guzfip··on YouTube now world's largest media company, topping Disney
Oh man, I think I had a subscription to HBO through YouTube

Then HBO did a machine gun fire of price increases so I cancelled.

For the next few weeks every single YouTube recommended video was an HBO show/movie.

guzfip··on YouTube now world's largest media company, topping Disney
> Youtube must know better than me what to recommend me out of all the videos... still, I get presented the same shite again and again.

Yep, for some reasons the recommendation engines seem to have become “oh you glanced at this post for 2 second or you watched a single video, this must be exclusively what you want”

I’ve seen it on social media too, notably Facebook.

guzfip··on Layoff Thinking
> Everyone should consider, will you actually die?

Depends on where you live. I had the luck of losing everything once. I also had the luck of living in Florida at the time.

Non-homeless, just intoxicated people have frozen to death outside where I live now.

guzfip··on AI Will Be Met with Violence, and Nothing Good Will Come of It
> but are we really just talking about fewer humans being economically needed? Perhaps biological human population decreasing? Is that... so bad?

Yes, this isn’t a matter of the “well we’ll reach a natural equilibrium overtime”.

If a fair percentage of the people in your society are now no longer economically, needed, they still have upkeep. They still need food. They don’t magically disappear into thin air, and they still need food/shelter /water/etc. How are they to get those things?

Will our leaders, contrary to everything they’ve ever shown us suddenly open their arms and act as mass charity for the masses? They can’t even design an effective welfare program for a pre-AI world.

Will the people displaced simply lie in a ditch somewhere and say “guess it’s time to starve to death”? I suppose Canadian-style suicide-as-service fits my previous Soylent green reference.
