gurumeditations··on A meteor or alien tech: Harvard professor plans UFO expedition
Seems to have nothing to do with aliens and the article is in such broken English it’s almost incomprehensible.
gurumeditations··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
In a fake economy, money flows to the top, which includes people who have significant holdings in 401Ks. Most people never get paid enough to even fully save up for retirement by the end.
gurumeditations··on Quiet quitting: why doing the bare minimum at work has gone global
Lol… peak ignorance and naïveté.
gurumeditations··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results

gurumeditations··on Why I’m Leaving the University
Truly incredible how outright bigotry continually gets posted to a technology website. This post is a man who unironically cites pop-psych Jordan Peterson, and then links to this incredibly hateful anti-gay and anti-trans article which claims kids are being made gay or trans by sexual predators grooming them online or are choosing to be queer because of white guilt.

Complaining about race, queers, liberals, and “Woke”. No tech discussion here! Just your typical hatemonger, who perhaps identifies an actual issue or two and uses it to justify their broader bigotry, and who is perpetuated by losers who cling to his complaints in order to blame their own inadequacies on these boogiemen.

gurumeditations··on Pentagon UFO study led by researcher who believes in the supernatural
If belief in the supernatural rules you out then you’d have to rule out billions of Christians and etc.
gurumeditations··on Life is not short
Gods will is for gay people to be murdered and to burn in hell, so Gods will is a very bad example to follow.
gurumeditations··on What did British officers think of the American civil war as it was happening?
“Russophobia” is a sham term invented by Russian propagandists to invalidate their opposition. It doesn’t exist.
gurumeditations··on What does “shitty job” mean in the low-skill, low-pay world?
Same with gays especially, you have to live in a city or live in hiding in most places.
gurumeditations··on L.A. judge rules LGBT corporate diversity law unconstitutional
Why is this title focused on LGBT people when its primary target is racial minorities?

Oh, it’s because gay people are easiest for the hordes of straight people to attack these days. Racial minorities, that’s more risky.

gurumeditations··on George Hotz against the institutions

gurumeditations··on Spotify made a cowardly choice: to submit to the Kremlin
According to HN commenters, opposing Russia in any way is wrong because censorship, slippery slope, dissidents, etc. take your pick of why their horse is higher than yours.
gurumeditations··on Why are Kansas City’s airwaves filled with pro-Putin ‘Radio Sputnik’ propaganda?
By HN logic, attacking this guy for broadcasting Russian propaganda is a “slippery slope” towards censorship.
gurumeditations··on ICANN's rejection of Ukraine's request to sever Russia from the internet [pdf]
No it isn’t. No one needs to access any website in Russia or Belarus. The international internet is totally unnecessary and nobody will suffer for cutting them out.

In fact, the world will benefit greatly from cutting out Russia from the internet! Imagine all the horrible cyberattacks and thefts of sensitive private info, money, ransomware attacks on cities schools and hospitals, and national security secrets stolen. China and Russia both deserve to be removed from the internet. They are abusive malicious actors using their access to the internet to do nothing but attack the responsible internet users.

The naive high horse, think of the slippery slope attitudes from know it all HN commenters are part of the downfall of the West and freedom and liberty, principles directly opposed by those two dictatorships. Those who benefit from those principles, yet allow them to be turned around and used by the enemy of those principles to destroy those principles, don’t deserve those principles. Freedom and liberty are privileges whose rights belong to those who jealously guard them rather than let them be molested and abused by their enemies.

gurumeditations··on Tell HN: YouTube and how my wife lost 7 years of work
I agree with others that users need a technology bill of rights. We also need heavy handed breakup of the tech giants into their constituent parts so that more competition will make smaller businesses fight over how well they can treat people instead of how big they can grow.
gurumeditations··on The CIA and the New Dialect of Power
What relevancy does this political op-ed have on hacker news? None.
gurumeditations··on Investors bought a record share of U.S. homes in 2021
Jobs are concentrating in metro areas and so that’s where housing is concentrating. Costs going up in a growing metro economy creates a cycle where more lucrative jobs are attracted and thus more expensive housings are built.

At some point, it becomes far more profitable to build a housing development or luxury apartments than regular affordable apartments. Some places have zoning that limits new construction but even if they didn’t, all you’d get is housing built to chase the highest profit, single family homes, luxury apartments, and 55+ apartments, instead of affordable apartments.

The low income people I know all commute an hour or more into the metro areas because of their car allowing it.

This is, big picture, the death throes of a dying society, where the wealth has been stolen from future generations so much that there is no stronger incentive to produce and build for the laborers required to sustain a general economy, but rather it is most profitable to simply bleed off some wealth from the holders of it instead with ostentatiousness and luxury. Everyone is just trying to steal a piece from each other for themselves like in crypto instead of creating value.

gurumeditations··on I’m a public school teacher – the kids aren’t alright
If they paid decent and made it so you could drive one way for four hours and drive back to base the next four hours and go home for the night, the shortage would end like that.
gurumeditations··on Tinder charges more for young gays, lesbians and the over-30s, says Which?
Straight people: here’s why homophobia doesn’t exist (because if I acknowledged it exists I’d have to acknowledge that I play a part in it and I’d feel bad about myself)
gurumeditations··on Tinder charges more for young gays, lesbians and the over-30s, says Which?
Not at all actually. Liberal ideologies like to dress up things like racism as moral and emotional hate-based, but discrimination and oppression often has economic roots. US slavery itself existed purely for economic reasons. Further oppression was to concentrate wealth in white society.

Yet these are recognized by straight people as racism, but straight people don’t recognize, let’s be fair, anything at all as discrimination against gay people.

gurumeditations··on High-sucrose diets contribute to brain angiopathy and higher brain dysfunctions
The craving for sugar is so difficult to resist as well, and low sugar attractive food is hard to find. And as soon as you have to eat socially with a partner, friends, family etc it basically becomes impossible to avoid sugar because the only way to do it is basically handcraft your own diet.
gurumeditations··on High-sucrose diets contribute to brain angiopathy and higher brain dysfunctions
Sugar, specifically the way we stuff all foods these days full of it, is the “root of all evil”. Healthcare costs, the obesity crisis (just because everyone is fat now doesn’t make it normal or healthy), lack of military readiness, sugar addiction, it’s all linked to sugar being extremely cheap and highly addictive which means every mass manufactured food is stuffed full of it.

I absolutely believe that sugar is the cigarette of our time. It’s just a lot harder to point out the deleterious effects on society. With cigarettes you can point to lung cancer and that’s all you need. Sugar causes varying harms, of varying degrees, so you can’t easily point to something to scare people, especially when obesity is normalized. On a societal level however, the price is clear.

Sugar must be regulated, taxed, and zero-calorie sweeteners encouraged as the default.

gurumeditations··on Why is U.S. labor supply so low?
I also was an essential slave. I wasn’t privileged enough to sit at home making twice as much on unemployment than at my job then. I share your resentment. I think the privileged, like those programmers complaining about having to do DoorDash deliveries once in a blue moon, need to start thinking about the growing swell of resentment in all societies towards them. Nothing good will come of it I promise.

gurumeditations··on China to supercharge uranium race with 150 new nuclear reactors
The US and Europe’s problem is that the major economic interests have become too powerful and entrenched. China’s government makes their economic interests kneel down before them, which has resulted in the greatest societal transformation in history. We in the West have weak pathetic governments happy to argue over which corrupt interest should get tens or hundreds of billions in loaned tax dollars to do nothing much this year, rather than destroy these corrupt power centers and transform society. Doesn’t help when society has been conditioned to resist any central planning. Frankly the only reason the West is wealthy is because Europe and then the US were able to take advantage of huge historical transformations (industrial revolution, WW2, natural resource discovery) to get where we are. Though you could argue China mostly took advantage of one that hurt us (offshoring/globalization). The question is whether they’ll be able to consciously guide their society into prosperity in the future.

gurumeditations··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
This thread is filled with an unbelievable amount of vile ignorance and hatred against Trans and Gay people. This is why straight people and non-trans people need to shut up when it comes to those respective topics, because you have no fucking idea what you’re talking about.

I wish I could see the faces of the commenters saying this evil hate and ignorance. I bet it’s many immigrants from regressive cultures like in India (considering it’s HN) and basically anywhere but the first world where Gay and Trans people are trampled on and hated and shunned compared to the US. Watch this get banned though because straight liberals only care about “racism”. Straight liberals don’t give a fuck about Gay and Trans people.

The amount of hatred and ignorance in this thread is flat out shocking. The fact that this is all allowed to stay up is disgusting and HN should be ashamed of itself. If this was about racial identities, this thread would become a national news story about how HN allows hordes of racist computer nerds.

But homophobia and transphobia is OK to straights. Fucking disgusting.

The connections are what enable you to create that in the first place. He’s not going to create it in his bedroom by himself and by virtue of that, have contracts land in his lap. There are lots of great things people could do, but they never get the opportunity to do them.
