guestbest··on Every vibe-coded website is the same page with different words. So I made that
Are LLM’s capable of time travel because it looks it also created all these cookie cutter websites in 2013

Every general purpose computer eventually becomes a game console.

It’s retro computing, diy or AI at this point.
guestbest··on How This Retro Cafeteria Became a Launchpad for Buffalo’s Food Entrepreneurs
So this is a ghost kitchen. Link if anyone is interested in this business model. I don’t consider virtual kitchen as good of as a term since people are not virtually working there but have a time share rental of the space like renting computer time.

guestbest··on The CoPilot Productivity Paradox
I use the bridge from cline to copilot with gpt4o and lately gtp5 to do code conversions from objective c without arc to swift for iOS only and it’s been basically the cheapest way I could find to do it without doing it manually. Anything less than a prebuilt application for me has been a real job to get it stood up using only the LLM’s
guestbest··on Étoilé – desktop built on GNUStep
They had a really good blog with the intricacies for objc, but when swift came out in 2014/5. It all stopped. It’s good to hear that they moved on to to other things, though.
guestbest··on You don't want to hire "the best engineers"
The best people have the best options which may be leaving the company only a few weeks to months when their ‘dream offer’ comes in. In addition most work doesn’t need the ‘best people’ but consistent and dedicated people. I think this was even in a Dale Carnegie course. I’d have to look it up. My point is ‘qualified’ people with good values are mostly want companies need.
guestbest··on Intel's "Clearwater Forest" Xeon 7 E-Core CPU Will Be a Beast
Intel made some really good low power gpus with good driver support. How are their gpus coming along for LLM support of local first?
guestbest··on Show HN: Sosumi.ai – Convert Apple Developer docs to AI-readable Markdown
ChatGPT does swift and objc remarkably well including UIKit and core data. Its gotten much better for project files with gpt5-mini
guestbest··on Apple rumored to be working on a smart home operating system version
Not really. There was a way of slab typed smart phones with capacitance touch screen windows mobile devices and they were more capable than the iPhone with on board GPS, etc. but they didn’t have an integrated App Store, which was the key to customer retention. The first iPhones didn’t have GPS and so the map app wasn’t quiet as capable as the other high end smart phones in the market as it couldn’t do directions properly. It had the best web browser, though.

Every other model of high end smart phones quickly adopted the App Store model since it was such an obviously thing to install application directly to the device, but up until it was a major missing feature. All phones at the time required a computer tethered to do the purchase and installation.

With the App Store the age of phones needing full general purpose computers was coming to an end. It was a whole cultural shift in software

Later they started the iCloud sync so backups could be done ‘in the field’ as well.

guestbest··on Apple rumored to be working on a smart home operating system version
The iPhone wasn’t as innovative as the AppStore which didn’t come around until iPhone OS 2. Selling software like music changed everything
guestbest··on Ask HN: Is the rise of AI tools going to be the next 'dot com' bust?
It didn’t last past 2001 (lasted from 1996ish to 2001) and much of the money was stock and not real money so the paper millionaires never had the money since it never vested by the time they were hired until the time the dot com company went bust. VA Linux was a prime example of a company that didn’t have a profitable exit and evaporated with the market correction that I remember started in late 2000. The 9/11 attacks in NYC erased any chance of a dot com recovery.

Everyone knew there was this thing called the internet because cable broadband was being deployed everywhere and being sold for less than cost. That company whose name I couldn’t remember went bust I think around 2003(?) and I think AT&T took them over and doubled the price.

I remember someone showing me that you could do to domino’s pizza website and get a free pizza (unlimited orders) just for going to their website. I think that was 2002-3(?). There were lost of giveaways during that era. It all came to a stop as the internet grew and costs pilled up more so than the dot com bust.

guestbest··on Apple brings OpenAI's GPT-5 to iOS and macOS
Yes, thanks
guestbest··on Apple brings OpenAI's GPT-5 to iOS and macOS
The phone can already copy your voice based on only a few hundred words, right? The next step is to have it remotely apply, work, and attend meetings for me. The invisible touch of the market if you will
guestbest··on We may not like what we become if A.I. solves loneliness
I’ve got little kids and let me tell you, lots of parents are unplugged after work. We meet at the parks, museums and libraries

guestbest··on Pimping My Casio: Part Deux
Was there ever a version of this that would run a full blown DOS?
guestbest··on Zorin OS
Is this the spiritual successor to Lindows?
guestbest··on The Two Towers MUD
It was really fun watching the MOO and MUD and MUSH as the beginnings of the online, real time classroom and forums before the internet services and web servers really took off. All that was needed was Telnet which came with just about every computer. No browser needed. I think what killed it for growth was all the rules that needed to be read and followed before discussion could take place. IRC was much simpler
guestbest··on Gemini CLI
You’d think with all this AI tooling they'd be able to organize better, but I think that the AI Age will be a very messy one with messaging and content
guestbest··on Amoeba: A distributed operating system for the 1990s (1990) [pdf]
I seem to recall that early versions of Linux wouldn’t run on a cheap 386sx until the kernel started to incorporate embedded applications from widespread use in the late 90s. Also I remember the minimum ram was 4 meg but could go down to 2 meg if networking wasn’t installed even though it was built in to the kernel. Until the dot com boom, I don’t recall Linux being a partially flexible operating system. I think this is what kept windows 3.1 and ms-dos going until the late 90s
guestbest··on Finding Dead Websites
The Usenet was considered a better place to store data about a topic for a year than a website because the interactive format allowed other people to comment. There was only cgi guestbooks which pale in comparison to a newsreader. People didn’t think back then about keeping information around forever because books were still the primary way information was captured, retained and transferred
guestbest··on Show HN: A DOS-like hobby OS written in Rust and x86 assembly
It would seem to logically follow that a Disk Operating System would have a directory list utility for disks like ‘dir’. It was there in the first version called 86 DOS.

guestbest··on VC money is fueling a global boom in worker surveillance tech
There are already several books about Surveillance capital. It’s not just VC money but public money, too. People pay taxes to get monitored by the government then go to work at a job where further monitoring takes place. Maybe one day houses will come with a build in no tech safe room free from surveillance and it won’t just be the bathroom as Bill Gates joked about in 2007 with his interview alongside Steve Jobs
guestbest··on The Sky's the limit: AI automation on Mac
I’m ok with owning a Mac if it only means that AI tools don’t have root access to the machine.
guestbest··on A Complete Guide to Meta Prompting
How about “prompt fiddling”? Gives it a musical quality and we can imagine ourselves as musicians
guestbest··on Whatever happened to cheap eReaders?
No one bought MP3s from Apple through iTunes. Audio was in their native format. Apple even had a page about importing MP3s into iTunes, so not exactly a walled garden there even for iPod. And the iPhone could play MP3’s in the native music app since it was first released.

https://support.apple.com/guide/itunes/choose-import-setting...

Also, while eink might be more expensive when assembled into an ebook reader, why not use a color android tablet with brightness set on low? Why are the hardware specs so restrictive? I understand the preference for long battery life, but it’s not like power outlets are in short supply. It seems like tablets are much more open as a device than an ebook reader

guestbest··on The ‘white-collar bloodbath’ is all part of the AI hype machine
If the foreign candidates were so much superior than locally born candidates as you explained, why not just open a campus in that country and thus save the best employees from having to uproot from their native culture?
