gubatron··on Creator of "Dirty Jobs" Mike Rowe testifies to Congress
If most of the readers here are like myself then we can't really do anything about that issue, I can't fix or do anything very well with my hands, takes me forever and ends up doing like a 5 year old did it. I'm great with logic abstractions but I suck in the physical world.

I find it funny this post is #1 on hacker news today.

gubatron··on Greplin: 1.5 Billion Documents Indexed, Six Engineers
I wonder if they use Solr to distribute their ever growing index.
gubatron··on How to work around Amazon EC2 outages
Don't put all your infrastructure on a single cloud provider... spread your eggs in different baskets.
gubatron··on Why do apps from the same company look worse on Android than on iPhone?
laziness, different developer teams... I don't think it's Android's fault at all.

With enough time and assets you can build pretty amazing UIs on Android. Everything is there for you to create custom components and override styles.

gubatron··on The Care and Feeding of the Android GPU
if you're dealing with lots of data from the Media Providers right on the phone, and you've worked for months on optimizing how to retrieve, cache, massage and display this data on lists, and you're still not getting a decent frame rate when scrolling through List Views you care about posts like these.

Never ocurred to me that GPU would help. I also come from a server programming background and hearing that GPU acceleration on the UI could help is like breathing fresh air.

There's several other more complex things you can deal with if you're writing apps that bring some actual value to the user, other than doing stupid web clients on android. It's not all waiting for data on a socket.

gubatron··on Ubuntu moving to rolling release?
hopefully this will mean that they'll have updated ISOs on their website more often.

It's ridiculous that many people that get an ISO end up having issues with things like missing WiFi drivers fpr laptops and they're not able to download the updates to fix the problem unless they can get a hold of an ethernet connection to the internet.

gubatron··on Ask HN: What are you working on right now?
FrostWire for Android
gubatron··on Ask HN: What do you do when you can't sleep...
facebook games, tetris battle. perfect thing to let your mind get a break

gubatron··on Ask HN: Tips for Hackers having Kids?
same here, 1.5 months behind you.
gubatron··on Ask HN: Tips for Hackers having Kids?
Me, I've been looking for a Provigil prescription.

My daughter though is my biggest treasure, nothing in life will ever make me as happy, fullfilled and scared of loosing than her.

I've been a dad now for 3 months (currently working long hours and waiting for baby to wake up for her 3am feeding)

I've learned to value sleep, I think of weekend afternoons as brain-rebuilding sessions, I sleep as much as I can saturdays and sundays.

Now, I try to do email, hacker news and all the dilly dallying after I'm home and everyone is asleep, during the day I try to be as productive as possible, since I feel I should head home as early as I can to be with my daughter and help my wife.

Congratulations and welcome to the club (it's indeed a club, you'll notice other parents nodding back at you when you have your baby with you, also you'll notice how babies are to women as hot girls are to guys, they can't help but turn around and look at you and your baby)

gubatron··on [video] Chrome 5 vs IE 9 Platform Preview (almost not fair)
After I read this, I had to try it for myself http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/20...

MacBook Pro Specs Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz 4GB Ram NVIDIAGeForce 9600M GT 512MB (not used by chrome since it's all at the application level, no hardware acceleration)

AlienWare Specs Intel Core 2 2.16Gz 2 GB Ram GeForce Go 7600 256Mb

Microsoft is getting it's DirectX Big Guns and trying to give us a glimpse of what the web will be once every other browser will be doing hardware accelerated graphics. Google better make a move quickly to not loose momentum with chrome.

gubatron··on Ask HN: How do you start development of your latest great idea?
Brainstorm with a group of people I respect. Put the idea to the test to foresee inconvenients and opportunities I may not have considered after a long time thinking about it myself.

Then I just go and code the core of it ugly and fast into simple tests to make sure it'll fly.

Then I go out and start building a first release with minimum functionality, release it to a closed alpha test group, iterate, iterate, iterate, go beta and cross my fingers.

gubatron··on Do Plants Talk?
This reminds me of a short film called "Descendants" http://vimeo.com/8642276
gubatron··on Ask HN: Music while coding
Drum and bass FTW.

Some free sources of D&B are BassDrive.com (live djs), Pandora and Last.fm. After you know what you like there's plenty available (used & cheap) on Amazon.com

Also a lot of techno, Vivaldi and Bach

gubatron··on Reviewing the Nokia N900, User & Developer opinions
Disclosure: I'm an Android developer. However I've also developed Qt4 applications, something which had me excited about Maemo since I could've leveraged my skills to build on yet another mobile platform. After trying this phone for 3 weeks, sorry Nokia.
gubatron··on How to camouflage yourself from facial recognition technology
There's never been a better time to be a creepy stalker.

Back in the beginning when Facebook wasn't stalker friendly I remember wanting to have auto tagging based on facial recognition. Now... now I'm afraid that I'll get tagged by other people in facebook (even though I'm not part of it anymore) and facebook will of course make money by selling all the facial patterns to third parties.

The applications of facial recognition make my mind fly, they remind me of Minority Report and marketers recognizing you wherever you go, it makes me think of even more divorces based on far more evidence that will be automatically available on social networks.

I think I'll start wearing some make-up a few months from now, or turn my face away every time I see a camera. The end of anonymity is near.

Tried to apt-get it (on Ubuntu 9.10) but got scared when I gotta a warning about lzma getting uninstalled and possibly breaking my dpkg.

Same folder compressed in 1/2 the size as with tar cvfz, sick.
