guard-of-terra··on Tuberculosis-resistant cows developed for the first time using CRISPR technology
While they're at it, they might also make milk not burn-prone.

I've read there's a single base that makes cow's milk to behave like that.

guard-of-terra··on Figuring out the best place to live in Helsinki
It looks like a palm touch.
guard-of-terra··on Californians are paying billions for power they don't need
Producing more energy than it's possible to consume and then "splitting the bill" is especially a tax on the poor, since they will feel the 50% difference in price that article mentions, more than anyone.
guard-of-terra··on How travel tech evolved over three decades during my three trips to Russia
It's possible that in 10 years Internet will be segregated into per-country segments and she'll have trouble communicating with hosts while outside and sharing photos when inside.
guard-of-terra··on The Great Crime: How an American Diplomat Resisted the Armenian Genocide
Nowp. Just don't grant them residence.
guard-of-terra··on The Great Crime: How an American Diplomat Resisted the Armenian Genocide
> that's why you need strong institutions

I do but I understand clearly that I'm not getting them where I live, any time soon.

What's my backup plan?

"Fighting other types" is one thing, genocide is another thing. Two different words for a reason.

guard-of-terra··on The JVM is not that heavy
Locales? Timezones? Unicode? There's a lot of stuff that is there to be used from time to time, does not mean it hits your processor cache often.

BTW, libruby-2.3 is 2,5M, just the shared object file, and it tries to use all aforementioned stuff from the underlying UNIX.

guard-of-terra··on Were Early Modern People Perpetually Drunk? (2016)
Can human body actually make use of alcohol as energy? Because I was fairly sure we can only make energy of something that breaks down to glucose, which alcohol obviously doesn't.

Not so sure already.

guard-of-terra··on India's tech industry panics over U.S. plans to change high-skilled visas
I imagine that's Green Card.

> Dowries will also likely go down

I can't help wondering, how does being in IT and travelling to USA affect female Indians' marriage prospects? There's definitely quite a few Indian women in american IT, expecially project management.

I more or less understand how for a male this is very desirable, can you fill me in what's in it for females?

guard-of-terra··on The deep roots of modern resentment
> If you were a landlord managing an apartment building, how much do you charge for a unit? If all of your tenants suddenly make twice as much money as they did, how long before you double their rent?

Remember, your tenants are now able to move to gentrified areas, their wages allow that. Some might want to get a mortgage for a house they could not dream of previously. So now your apartments will have to compete with much wider selection of property. You'll raise prices definitely, but not as much as you would think, and you'll spend most of the difference doing renovations and spending on security.

Offtopic-ish:

> some small fraction of people do manage to practice complete abstinence

I actually think it's a pretty large fraction, but they do it out of inability to secure a mate. The people for whom supply and demand curves never cross.

It's much harder to reason why a person capable of having a life will choose to not to.

guard-of-terra··on The deep roots of modern resentment
Because the "right" don't want to earn minimum wage; they want to earn decent wage, which is problematic in condition of "race to the bottom" caused by influx of people from less developed countries.
guard-of-terra··on The deep roots of modern resentment
This means I don't like book reviews on HN, that's like paywall but worse.
guard-of-terra··on The deep roots of modern resentment
Unfortunately this article doesn't penetrate this extremelly important topic. It doesn't arrive anywhere.

> Ceaseless change gave birth to liberalism, which, for all the mistakes made in its name, continues to adapt. Despite those mistakes, it remains the best response today.

I mean, seriously? That's proof by assertion.

guard-of-terra··on Ask HN: Which developers do you closely follow?
Steve Yegge http://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/

Wil Shipley https://blog.wilshipley.com/

Yossi Kreinin http://yosefk.com/

All three brilliant, with good sense of humor and having good "vision thing"

guard-of-terra··on I was trained for the culture wars in home school
I can't understand why are you arguing for school if you didn't like it at all? Do you honestly think you're so unique that everybody else has different experience? Because many of us don't.

I think that home schooling is a basic human right, just like choosing where to live and what job to take. That's because we are human and not ants. School for which there are no alternatives is a small Gulag camp.

guard-of-terra··on I was trained for the culture wars in home school
> for the population overall

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ones_Who_Walk_Away_from_Om...

It was definitely good for them to hold that child in the basement! As a population overall.

Why would I care about "civil liberties" if they come at cost of ruining my life? And I know I'm not in any way an exception. I won't be around enjoying them, right? Do I look like a person who enjoys anything right now?

guard-of-terra··on I was trained for the culture wars in home school
> socialize

You mean, learn what it is to be ridiculed, assaulted and mocked? Awesome development indeed! How could I ever live without it!? I hope this happens to your kid.

guard-of-terra··on I was trained for the culture wars in home school
My point is: You should be able to shield your kids from that shit. You should be able to take them home.

I don't care about bullies, and the fun thing is: most kids are bullies when push comes to shove.

guard-of-terra··on I was trained for the culture wars in home school
> I genuinely believe that home schooling shouldn't be allowed

Maybe we should just give kids to bullies to use as slaves? Probably auction them.

(School was unarguably the worst period of my life, period. Bonus points for being blamed for that even later on, when affluent and successful)

(Nobody ever blames bullies for being ones. They were "just kids". Now you - you do get blamed for having been bullied)

guard-of-terra··on I was trained for the culture wars in home school
I think that Abrahamic religions is perhaps the worst thing that ever happened to Homo Sapiens.

LiL.
guard-of-terra··on First they came for the Iranians
I don't expect you to switch to my side opinion-wise, just to outvote you.

You, however, could give it a shot, but didn't try.

I think you don't understand how not merely democracy, not merely human society, but the whole game theory works.

Yes you're going to eventually hold a referendum about CERN if it will continously raise worries, and no, you don't get to "discount" anything. You can try to defer this vote-casting, but, like Trump demonstrated, reality is a mean bitch and you'll end up paying for disregarding other people's opinions.

guard-of-terra··on First they came for the Iranians
Why do I have to show you anything? Let's just make a vote on the issue.
guard-of-terra··on Two Infants Treated with Universal Immune Cells Have Their Cancer Vanish
Only if dormant cancer cells get passed from cured parent to child, which generally should not happen.
guard-of-terra··on First they came for the Iranians
People from a different culture coming to where I live without invitation, not adjusting to local norms, trying to bring their own norms with them and force those on local population, doing horrible crimes and, most often, escaping without punishment or after a "slap on a wrist" to return later for more.

Like, "severing child's head and walking around downtown with it, blood dripping, while screaming ISIS claims" horrible.

I would really like to stop that, bonus points for sending as much of them home as humanely possible, and then holding people who let this happen in the first place direly accountable.

guard-of-terra··on First they came for the Iranians
It's your freedom to say that, and my freedom to not agree with it.
guard-of-terra··on Two Infants Treated with Universal Immune Cells Have Their Cancer Vanish
However, given that cancer cells do not evolve between individuals (as opposed to bacteria and virii), if we are to find a efficient immunological treatment it's going to stay efficient. If anything, we will evolve for our cancers to respond better to it.
guard-of-terra··on Two Infants Treated with Universal Immune Cells Have Their Cancer Vanish
It's hard to cure cancer definitely because cancer cells will always be trying to out-evolve any treatment. Anything that quickly kills 99% of cells, unfortunately, lets them select for survival traits really fast.
