guard-of-terra··on Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco (1995)
But they have virtually no muslim migrants, no legalized prostitution, etc, etc...

Are they nationalists or hedonists after all?

guard-of-terra··on Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco (1995)
Yeah, Poles got free pass in the world of globalization - most of the upsides without much downsides. Not even sure what's left for nationalists to rant about.

> certainly did not erase pre-existing Russian national pride

It did. Crushing pre-existing Russian national pride was central to Soviet dogma, they called it "великодержавный шовинизм".

guard-of-terra··on Ur-Fascism by Umberto Eco (1995)
Czarist Russia wasn't totalitarian in that it didn't try to become paternalistic Alpha and Omega for its citizens. It was a typical XIX century monarchial state.

On related note, Soviet Communists on a good day murdered more civilians than Czarist Russia did in a decade.

guard-of-terra··on Scientists caught off-guard by record temperatures linked to climate change
"misery that extreme weather will inflict on us"

This misery will be very unevenly distributed. Most people will trade one weather for another. Some will definitely benefit. A good portion will probably see their current place uninhabitable.

guard-of-terra··on A century of trends in adult human height
What's worth of growth if you stay poor?
guard-of-terra··on Why do so few humans kill themselves?
For some reason I easily tolerate very spicy food but I have huge fear of pain.
guard-of-terra··on Why do so few humans kill themselves?
I think we humans for some reason have ridiculously wide pain gauge. I can only theorize that we've got super pain sensitivity along with super brain.

Humans are very often disabled by pain alone, with neligible body damage. That's clearly evolutionary disadvantageous. Makes torture possible, etc.

guard-of-terra··on Dutch men confirmed as world's tallest
I don't care terribly much what they prefer.

Much more interesting question is what they settle on. That's what determines selection.

guard-of-terra··on Dutch men confirmed as world's tallest
On Balkans they eat a lot of meat. They're kings of meat. Mostly in grilled form. Was awesome.

Serbian women are also spectacularly beautiful. While men are mostly "meh" (can't appraise them much, tho)

guard-of-terra··on Dutch men confirmed as world's tallest
In my anecdotal experience (which I nevertheless tend to value more than "obvious" trivia everybody carries around),

Tall women don't prefer taller men.

Well, maybe they do in principle, but it doesn't seem to affect their choice at the end of day. Most of really tall women usually go with average height men.

guard-of-terra··on Dutch men confirmed as world's tallest
I hear about this argument and I can't help myself wondering:

How many short men are getting excluded from gene pool as a result of this?

My take: almost none. They might get "less desirable" women, but otherwise all men and all women are going to pair up.

guard-of-terra··on Machine Learning over 1M hotel reviews
They could have provided richer graphs, more of them, or at least a link towards a firehose of results. Maybe I'm missing something?
guard-of-terra··on Machine Learning over 1M hotel reviews
"The more stars the Hotel has the more likely you have to pay for WiFi"

Luckily today, you can see whether Wi-Fi is free on the premises, and give the Hotel its well deserved boot if it's not.

How they ever get this idea is beyond me.

guard-of-terra··on What if financial systems were hacked
You don't need that many people for tending to machines and you don't need that many people for "less savory reasons".
guard-of-terra··on What if financial systems were hacked
It won't work this time. Cynically speaking, it's too expensive today per soul liberated.
guard-of-terra··on What if financial systems were hacked
Today, nobody would want to feed all those mouths, not much to extract from them.

Why would you want to enslave much people today, especially when half of them are expected to be of age 40+?

guard-of-terra··on Why we're Post-Fact
I would say that we saw the facts and were so seared by them that we now shun them.

For example, how do I live with my country doing what will be "sometimes eating roasted children" if it was a person?

And that I know for fact. I choose to "worry" which will probably give me cancer, but simpler people choose to ignore facts for good and live peacefully.

guard-of-terra··on My biology paper in Science
That's nice!

Turns out, biologists (many kinds of scientists probably) are in need of computer modelling, information retrieval and so on. Naturally it gives opportunity to us IT folks, even without terribly much scientific background.

I've co-authored a biology paper too. Here is the resulting code: https://github.com/alamar/microbe

guard-of-terra··on The Science of the Missing Gravitational Waves
Maybe they did?

I've asked a question like this and was confirmed that we can't observe black hole formation, only "collapsars", which are almost like black holes but without matter crossing event horizon.

Looks like astrophysicists assume one thing and cosmologists another thing.

guard-of-terra··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
Having democratic support doesn't entitle him with right to dismantle the very system that let him be elected, and in my uneducated opinion that's what he does.

Democracy is playing by the rules, not changing these rules each few years as you see fit, even while quoting "popular support" (but not holding any referendums, definitely).

guard-of-terra··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
> People of Turkey seem to be supporters of this path.

A doubt all of them are. Just as with Brexit, popular opinion might be divided.

guard-of-terra··on After the coup, Turkey turns against America
> because the population generally has quite anti-US sentiments

Are you assuming that population spontaneously acquires "anti-US sentiments"?

I would attribute it to some kind of propaganda campaign, therefore cause and effect will be switched.

guard-of-terra··on My Venezuela Nightmare: A 30-Day Hunt for Food in a Starving Land
I don't have good source on Chinese demography, picking info about it one line at a time.

Anyway, there's no reason to think that Germans would easily defeat post-Imperial Russian Republic (given no Bolsheviks and therefore no civil wars, no mass emigration, famines or murders). Soviets basically lost half of pre-WWII years on chaos.

Russia without Soviets would look more like 350M strong Norway than like 140M strong Nigeria how it ended up.

I've not been to Soviet Kiev, but yeah, I'm claiming that Late Soviet Moscow had no privately owned stores. I would be very interested to read about these if they existed.

First ones began to appear around 1987 I think in the form of КООП.

guard-of-terra··on My Venezuela Nightmare: A 30-Day Hunt for Food in a Starving Land
Do you see many colonizers in present? I don't.

I see rapid decolonization. Japanese leave rural areas and northern territories. Russians fled Central Asia, pushed off Caucasus, large swaths of land become anthropic deserts. French in no position to colonize Africa anymore, if anything they're getting colonized. Chinese flock to Southern coast and no longer push that hard demographically on Uighurs/Tibetans.

Germans don't even seem to flock to their Northern, Baltic shore. And it has better climate than absolute most of their supposed "sraum".

Arguable, Polish and Balts skip their countries for greener pastures. If anybody in EU will be lacking room they can move there any minute.
