I am a firm believer that 100% remote work is actually a net negative for collaboration.
Workshops, ideation, brainstorming, all of these thrive when people are engaged in the moment, not on a scheduled zoom call.
There’s definitely a balance between in-office and WFH. WFH is great for corporate jobs cuz half your day is filled with boring meetings, but for start-ups, it’s the opposite.
Warms me up and is healthy.
Find people with similar interests and eventually you get to meet their friends too and hang out.
If you like playing multi player video games, find people to play with and connect with them.
There's a lot of people at these companies who don't do anything meaningful and are getting paid a boat load. There's people like that in almost every company.
Back from the Yahoo peak days I had multiple people tell me that all they did in a week was fix 1-2 small bugs in a day and didn't do jack shit the rest of the week and got paid handsomely. Probably explains in-part the demise of Yahoo as a tech company.
My point is, layoffs typically target workers who are not needed by the company anymore.
People do layoffs in their personal life too. Your house cleaner or landscaper gets laid off when you decide to stop using their services as you try to do the work yourself and save some money.
This ultra-left stance on layoffs being bad is ridiculous. It's part of the business cycle and economic outlook the companies are facing.
Ah, the nostalgia from the late 90s / early 2000s.
People got laid off cause companies are cutting costs and the laid off people got identified as non-essential for the company to continue growing / increase revenue.
If you're an all star player with high ROI that is hard to replace, chances are you are not laid off, and even if you are, it could be cause the entire department or project was shut down.
But really you can also ask: Why did tech companies hire like 3-4x the amount they are laying off in the last 2-3 years? Why are they mass hiring? The inverse reason is usually why there are mass layoffs.
it's custom to every user and every development environment
It can probably be configured by someone in your company as a docker image you can run, but usually that's only necessary for large teams where IT is provisioning development laptops and there's a lot of consistency and common dependencies, even then I don't see it being worth the effort as those preferences would still vary across team roles and projects.
If essential services and utilities collapse as well as govt functions, you’re talking about a mass panic, looting, and just pure chaos as every family fends for itself.
Most likely, there would be no HN.
What you’re basically describing is creating the worlds shittiest cap table.
No investor would touch this. At the end of the day you need capital and revenue and capital has to come from somewhere if you want growth.
A lot of the industries blockchain is trying to change I.e. fintech and bank settlements are well not exactly industries that want to change and are running on cobol.
XRP was supposedly trying to fix the nostros/vostros issue with international currency bank settlements and transfers.
There’s a lot in the works, but crypto is hard to grasp for the regular user outside of buying some coins in coin base and trying to profit.
When will they learn
Only reason to have coins in a cex is when converting to fiat, even then you might be better off using a dex and moving in and out of a USD stable coin for day trading and fiat conversion.
If I needed something Id go and buy it, don’t need some pushy sleazy salesman trying to trick me.
These door to door sales are so bad for the consumer there are even laws in states that state you have 3 days to back out of a contract signed during a door to door sale.
Better off buying that $12-$15 bottle or getting the kirkland costco $8-10 bottles. Never had a bad one from those and they taste decent.
The sub 5-6% interest rates were a result of the housing crash. Prior to 2008/2009 the rates were pretty much where they are now.
No one can for sure tell if we’ll ever see rates so low again.
Cheap/low interest debt is good when compare to inflation.
Can’t get hacked and lose your coins.
Not your keys not your coins!
Pros and cons. The consumer is at risk, well don’t be an idiot consumer. No different than giving someone cash and them running away.
