gsibble··on Damn Vulnerable MCP Server
Accurate.
gsibble··on Notion Mail Is Out
I'll be keeping Superhuman thanks. But good for Notion.
gsibble··on Quick Primer on MCP Using Ollama and LangChain
MCP is great for when you’re integrating tools locally into IDEs and such. It’s a terrible standard for building more robust applications with multi-user support. Security and authentication are completely lacking.

99% of people wouldn’t be able to find the API keys you need to feed into most MCP servers.

gsibble··on "Slow Pay, Low Pay or No Pay": Blue Cross Approved Surgeries Then Refused to Pay
Do people not realize 80% of companies are self-insured, which means they are the ones actually paying for procedures? Not insurance companies.

Insurance companies are just doing what their clients, our employers, want which is reducing cost at every possible angle. Just like how companies cut every possible cost everywhere these days.

It's all the same problem: cost cutting across the board, at any price, by American businesses.

gsibble··on Dow plunges 2,200 points, Nasdaq enters bear market
Something like 60% of consumer spending is by the top 5% of income earners.

This is actually a tax on the rich. And they won't care about higher prices.

gsibble··on Build an 8-bit computer from scratch
I built this kit. It was a lot of fun but very tedious. I also have a computer engineering degree so I didn't really learn much. It was fun to show to people though.

If you don't understand what a register is for example though, OH MAN. You'll love this!

gsibble··on Senior Developer Skills in the AI Age
I completely agree, as a fellow senior coder. It allows me to move significantly faster through my tasks and makes me much more productive.

It also makes coding a lot less painful because I'm not making typos or weird errors (since so much code autocompletes) that I spend less time debugging too.

gsibble··on I maintain a 17 year old ThinkPad
I have both a brand new M4 Macbook and a ThinkPad P16s. I run Arch with Hyprland on my P16s.

They are both fantastic laptops but have clearly different use cases.

My Macook is my browsing/YouTube/music/research/photo editing machine. It's fantastic at those things. It also integrates into FaceTime and iMessage which means I don't have to pull out my phone all the time.

My P16s is my work laptop. I can disappear into it for 5 hours straight writing code. I'm either in Cursor or the terminal most of that time with a little browser use. And hyprland is freaking gorgeous, fast, and incredibly stable. I don't get nearly as good a development experience on my Macbook, mostly because so much of its navigation is based upon the trackpad vs. the keyboard in Hyprland.

So, I enjoy both and each has their place. I think my only complaint about the P16s is while it has an extremely high res OLED display, it's not as bright as I'd prefer.

gsibble··on Elon Musk's xAI buys Elon Musk's X for $33B on paper
Interesting. They already worked together so closely I doubt this changes much other than the ability to commingle compute and such. Probably streamline operations like HR. Also ties the fate of X to XAI......interesting.
gsibble··on CIA Director Reveals Signal Comes Installed on Agency Computers
Source?
gsibble··on MCP vs. API Explained
So far I have not found anything useful.
gsibble··on MCP vs. API Explained
Absolutely correct. You can also use tools everywhere while clients have to be MCP compatible.

MCP is not all it's cracked up to be.

gsibble··on Ex-SAP CTO walks away with €7.1M payout after scandal
Man.....I'm all for good executive pay usually, but this is absurd.
gsibble··on Apple says it will add 20k jobs, spend $500B, produce AI servers in US
Your arguments lost all credibility at Trump getting a 3rd term. That would require a constitutional amendment which just isn't happening.

Come back to reality.

gsibble··on Apple says it will add 20k jobs, spend $500B, produce AI servers in US
Trump might be weaker but if Vance were to win the 2028 election he'd just continue the same policies.
gsibble··on DOGE has 'god mode' access to government data
Slanted political article. Flagged.
gsibble··on Judge tells agencies to restore webpages and data
That goes both ways. HN flags all kinds of stories they don't like.

I'd be happy to see the system reformed.

gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
Actually, OpenAI's for profit was going to buy itself from the non-profit at $40 billion. So this at over twice that is a much more attractive offer.

And a valuation in a funding round is not the same as a cash offer for the full amount. Otherwise every startup would be liquid.

gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
Exactly. Well said.
gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
You can't take into account something like that when considering fiduciary duty.
gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
I wholeheartedly agree
gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
How in the hell is this not on the front page?

Once again, any bad news for OpenAI is censored from reaching the front page of HN.

gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
A bird in hand is worth two in the bush and a judge will see it that way if the non-profits directors balk at this based upon an investment valuation.
gsibble··on Musk-led group makes $97B bid for control of OpenAI
So, from what I have read about spinning a for-profit off from a non-profit, the for-profit needs to be purchased from the non-profit at market value. There have been a lot of questions about how MSFT or OpenAI's other investors would fund the purchase of the for-profit entity.

I think what this does is set a floor valuation with a fully backed bid that the non-profit would get IN CASH for essentially buying the for profit.

This really messes up OpenAI's plans because it means someone else would have to bid more and be willing to part with the cash in order for OpenAI to spin off.

Actually a brilliant move that gums up OpenAI's plans.

gsibble··on Intel doesn't know how to be a foundry, Tim Cook reportedly said in 2011
Counter-Point:

GCP and AWS came out of product focused companies that effectively converted to providing the services they used internally.

gsibble··on Promising results from DeepSeek R1 for code
This is incredible
gsibble··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
There's all kinds of content that you can get fined for hosting. Pirated movies for instance.

Is that also free speech? Again, it's just the law and how it is enforced.

gsibble··on TikTok says it is restoring service for U.S. users
The law gives the President discretion to decide what apps to ban essentially. It didn't specifically target TikTok.

So Biden decided to ban it and Trump decided to unban it. It's all perfectly within the law.

gsibble··on Sam Altman responds to his sister's claim of sexual abuse
Notice they all got flagged. I.e. removed from the front page immediately.
gsibble··on Sam Altman's sister files lawsuits against Sam alleging sexual abuse
Shocking everything against YC's interests always gets flagged. The flagging system is completely abused.

Why would normal HN users flag this? It's an interesting story that is very pertinent to the technology world.
