The accuracy that people want to actively sabotage Elon's plans for Tesla.
gsibble··on SpaceX in Talks for Share Sale That Would Boost Valuation to $800B
What are you joking? Amazon is super far behind and unlikely to be able to launch its satellites in time to meet its FCC licensing requirements. They won't even be only for 24+ months. Meanwhile Starlink is growing very quickly.

Amazon is not a competitor until they actually have a viable product which they may never achieve.

gsibble··on UniFi 5G
This device came out just after I already got Fios 2GB and Comcast 2GB for load balancing / failover.

If both of them go down, I doubt 5G will matter much. Not like I have a big UPS in the house anyways.

gsibble··on UniFi 5G
I would normally love this device, except I already have 2.5gbit fiber AND cable. They work for load balancing and failover.

Now I can't decide if I need a 3rd WAN.....

gsibble··on UniFi 5G
Good one.
gsibble··on Claude Opus 4.5
They lowered the price because this is a massive land grab and is basically winner take all.

I love that Antrhopic is focused on coding. I've found their models to be significantly better at producing code similar to what I would write, meaning it's easy to debug and grok.

Gemini does weird stuff and while Codex is good, I prefer Sonnet 4.5 and Claude code.

gsibble··on 73% of AI startups are just prompt engineering
Flagged. AI written article with questionable sources behind a wall that requires handing over PII.

gsibble··on Fungus in Chernobyl nuclear disaster zone has mutated to 'feed' on radiation (2024)
We've known this for 40 years? Why is it news today?
gsibble··on iPhone Pocket
One of the most innovative companies in the world......supposedly.....and they come out with this.
gsibble··on iPhone Pocket
How about no.
gsibble··on The only people who feel good are making over $200k and have large portfolios
Depends on where you live.
gsibble··on OpenAI’s promise to stay in California helped clear the path for its IPO
You didn't notice as soon as energy was needed for AI, all the tech companies gave up on green power and reducing emissions?
gsibble··on Boring is what we wanted
I still think the future for the Vision Pro is very bright. I think this version is more to get developers working on applications for it. Spatial computing is a fascinating idea.
gsibble··on Boring is what we wanted
How about:

- 5G connectivity - WiFi 7 - Tandem OLED Screen - Better webcam - FaceID - Cheaper RAM (RAM is more important to me these days than CPU speed) - More ports - Better/cheaper monitors - Make a proper tablet OS - Maybe a touchscreen but I really don't want one

just to get started

gsibble··on Boring is what we wanted
Mac hardware has so significantly outpaced software needs I think there are diminishing returns. I'm a software developer who uses all sorts of advanced stuff and I only bought an M4 Pro, not a Max, because it wasn't worth the extra money. There are so few applications that max out a CPU for any meaningful amount of time these days like rendering videos or 3D.

My M4 iPad Pro is amazing but feels totally overpowered for what it's capable of.

I guess what I'm saying is.......I don't need faster CPUs. I want longer battery life, 5G connectivity, WiFI 7, lighter weight, a better screen, a better keyboard, etc..

I guess it's odd that Apple spends so much time making faster computers when that is practically an already solved problem.

gsibble··on Testing out BLE beacons with BeaconDB
Way back in 2014, I once built a neat test of a product I wanted. I was CEO of a company that allowed an internet API to interface with bar/restaurant POS systems. We could open/close tabs, make orders, etc..

I always hated closing my tabs at the end of the night at bars since it could frequently take a little while for only a few seconds of work.

So I built an app that detected once you entered a beacon's area, and opened a bar tab for you with your name on it. You'd just go up to the bar and order as if you had a tab open already, and when you were done, you'd leave. If your phone didn't detect the beacon for 15 minutes, it closed the tab with your preferred credit card and tip (which you could edit).

We had a demo going for employees at Local Edition on Market street. It was really cool and worked really well. The issues came that exact position was not very exact at that time and I didn't think it was a feasible product to build and market since the installation of beacons at bars vs gaining users would be difficult.

But for a brief period, I never had to hand my credit card to a stranger or worry about getting stuck 20 minutes trying to close my tab.

If you like the idea, take it and run with it. I'm not going to do it but I feel like people would love it.

gsibble··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
This obviously isn't a tablet meant for people who own M4/M2 iPads to upgrade. You wouldn't be getting your money's worth (although the tandem OLED on the M4 is stunning).

This is just a minor update for anyone with an older iPad/iPad Pro in case they want to upgrade.

Many of the people here complaining don't seem to understand they are not the target market.

Also, I love using my iPad as a social media / YouTube content consumption device. It's a fantastic experience. I also use it for a lot of home control (mostly audio but also lighting). It sure is an expensive device but it lasts forever and I get my money's worth.

Oh, and Lightroom on it is fantastic!

gsibble··on Python 3.14 is here. How fast is it?
Or have it run some super common use case like a FastAPI endpoint or a numpy calculation. Yes, they are not all python, but it's what most people use Python for.
gsibble··on That Secret Service SIM farm story is bogus
You do realize practically everything every bad said about Trump was the same anonymous sourcing?

I don't like when people are inconsistent with how they apply standards.

gsibble··on Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy
It's just a very simple Linux install meant for developers. It's not for people who have used Linux before but meant to be a way for new people to try it for the first time.

And it's getting a lot of attention because of DHH. Doesn't look half bad either which helps.

gsibble··on Cloudflare is sponsoring Ladybird and Omarchy
I don't use it myself since I'm a long time Linux user, but I'm a big fan of Omarchy brining Linux to the masses. This is great that Cloudflare is sponsoring it!
gsibble··on Trump to Add $100k Fee to H-1B Visas

Asinine.

gsibble··on Trump to Add $100k Fee to H-1B Visas
Okay, how about offering a solution instead of just saying "We're all fucked". That's not an option for many of us.
gsibble··on Trump to Add $100k Fee to H-1B Visas
What great news
