gs17··on Λ Snap – An inviting programming language for kids and adults for CS study
That's more of a problem in text-based coding. One of the things I genuinely like about Snap (well, in my case NetsBlox, which is a fork of it) is the ability to have spaces and weird characters in a variable name.

Edit: Oh, you meant the lambda in the post title? It's not really part of the name, but you can at least type it into Snap itself.

gs17··on Λ Snap – An inviting programming language for kids and adults for CS study
Snap does have a limited keyboard mode (shift click), but it's not really as good as "real" IDE.
gs17··on K2 Horizon: Frontier Performance, Radically Open
https://ifm.ai/k2/ seems to work for me.

gs17··on Claude Code is going reduce limits by 25% from September 14
I'm pretty sure they mean going from 150% to 125%, where 1.25/1.50 = 0.83, so they're calling that a 17% reduction. It's less than today, but also more than a limit they made up and then didn't apply.
gs17··on Claude Code is going reduce limits by 25% from September 14
Sort of both? They're permanently raising it by less than a current temporary raise.

> Starting September 14, we're permanently raising standard weekly limits in Claude Code by 25% for Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans. Until then, the current 50% increase will be in place.

> Compared to today, this works out to a 17% reduction in weekly limits on Claude Code. We’re working on exciting changes that will make it feel like you’re getting more from Claude, while having more visibility and control of your usage. Can’t wait to share them.

gs17··on TwitterWebViewer has been permanently discontinued
I agree with banning them, but it's not really a paywall, it's an account wall, isn't it?
gs17··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Getting them federated properly was pretty tough a while ago (since any spammer could just set one up, there had to be a bar to clear), did that get fixed?
gs17··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
Hosting your own doesn't really matter if it just means you're on a social network with one user.
gs17··on What Happens When the Cost of Intelligence Drops 100x
"Robot, experience this tragic irony for me!"
gs17··on Anti-AI fonts are useless and harmful
It's slightly more expensive, but the cost would be worth it if this became common. It's not designed to be hard to OCR, it's designed to be hard to copy out of the source code, so it doesn't require a very advanced OCR system (and all the regions that would need OCR-ing are clearly marked).
gs17··on Anti-AI fonts are useless and harmful
It only works while it's rare. If it was more common, scrapers would switch to OCR or simply reverse the font so they can decode the ligatures.

Their own whitepaper brings up a bigger issue: if it works, it poisons search engines as well.

gs17··on A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life
I could see "semi-mirror" life evolving step-by-step. There's a few microbes that can eat L-Glucose already (although the enzymes involved seem to be meant for other compounds and just happen to work for it), they just aren't taking advantage of it yet.
gs17··on A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life
Honestly, it sounds like a decent TNG episode, the transporter malfunctions, but the "victim" seems fine, except he's left handed now. Soon, the whole ship starts falling ill.
gs17··on A U.S. Strategy to Prevent the Creation of Mirror Life
L-Glucose already exists, but the problem is that the amount in, e.g. one soda would make your intestines decide to entirely empty themselves. It's been trialed as a colon-cleansing agent for colonoscopy in much smaller doses than say a can of Coke would need, so it's not very useful in a consumer product.
gs17··on A spectre is haunting Unicode
The article mentions "an example of 彁 mistakenly used in a digitized Taisho newspaper due to a faded printing of 彊", but to me that implies the symbol already existed before then.
gs17··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
With electronic warrant systems and on-call judges, it can be 15 minutes or less, but that's typically for the simplest cases (e.g. DUI blood draw). However, given how non-seriously they take things currently I have little reason to believe "let me search Flock for this car reported stolen for the next week" wouldn't be a rubber stamp.
gs17··on FDA Admitted in Print That Nothing It Knows of Will Wash Cyclospora Off Lettuce
> What is cyclospora, anyway? It is not a bacterium or thing that I am familiar with. It is parasitic; it is a eukaryote; beyond those two definitions, it might as well be an alien from Venus because I'm not familiar.

It's a protist, which is pretty much "miscellaneous eukaryote".

gs17··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
> warrant-free flags for ongoing issues

Why couldn't they get a warrant if it's an ongoing issue? It should be really easy, and warrants like that wouldn't take a long time to get usually.

gs17··on Bike Bureau: Report Bike Lane Obstructions
> bikes and motorized treating busy sidewalks as special highways, which they use at speed

I'm always amazed more people aren't hurt in these situations. I can usually jump out of the way into the street, but what are people who can't do that supposed to do, just accept their fate?

And it bizarrely happens in places where there are good bike lanes. If it was "it's the street dodging cars, or sidewalk where you dodge me" I'd "get" it, but I'll see it right next to a protected bike lane.

gs17··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
It's about technology, but also Flock Safety, a Y Combinator startup from the S17 batch.
gs17··on License plate reader searches should require a warrant
That is unfortunately already sort of a thing. A ShotSpotter-recorded conversation was already used as evidence at least twice.
gs17··on Stealing Reasoning Traces from Proprietary LLM APIs
Actually, that brings up a good reason they can't fix it. Fable falls back to Opus when the topic is too "unsafe". That behavior requires traces than can move between models!
gs17··on RSI Simulator
I was thinking a clicker game where your mouse gets harder to move as you click.
gs17··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
In the US it's entirely possible to do that as well. I've never been forced to see a doctor outside of getting a form signed before grad school.

Greenhouse gases cause warming powered by that sun-delivered energy!
gs17··on Ocean heat records broken as hottest July temperature recorded
Yes, but there's no reason to stop trying to slow the acceleration. Things can be less bad, even if it's not perfect.

> and we dedicate 5,000% more acres to growing feed crops than to vegetables

And it's worth considering what would replace all that land (maybe some would end up being biofuel production, but a lot might be allowed to return to nature if it's not profitable anymore), along with things like less demand for slash and burn.

> - 45% of the co2 from farming is plants. This would increase.

And what percent of that is farming plants to feed animals?

gs17··on Making difficulty curves in games
Oblivion's problem is even worse than that. You can level up entirely from improving non-combat skills, so the enemies are harder and you're only better at jumping.
