grourk··on Osama bin Laden Is Dead
Haha, I love that I'm getting downvoted for this.
grourk··on Osama bin Laden Is Dead
Oh wah!
grourk··on Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (May 2011)
San Francisco -- Dropcam (https://www.dropcam.com/jobs)

Full time, summer interns.

grourk··on Ask HN: Moving to San Francisco: Best way to find an appartment
Caltrain is not the most reliable. In my experience, BART is more reliable.
grourk··on Why MapReduce is Easy
I believe he did, Bob.
grourk··on "Amazon's EBSs are a barrel of laughs in terms of performance and reliability"
Well, that's really just "-setra" and other file system mounting options, and mdadm (Linux software RAID) configuration options. Yes, there's a little bit of a learning curve and pain to get things set up, but it's not completely out of reach.

Despite being relatively old, I think the advice and approach still holds. Clearly, EBS hasn't improved since then and the need to do this kind of striping over EBS volumes hasn't been obviated yet.

grourk··on "Amazon's EBSs are a barrel of laughs in terms of performance and reliability"
Orion Henry at Heroku wrote about this and described different software RAID configurations and the performance characteristics of each a while back:

grourk··on Linux internals
"The first time I saw FSB packet descriptions I had a huge “ahhh!” moment so I hope someone out there gets the same benefit."

I think he means "aha!" moment, but it certainly could go either way.

grourk··on Japan's Strict Building Codes Saved Lives
Well, that's kind of the underlying point of the article and the discussion around it.
grourk··on Riak Python Client Needs Testers
If you have m-r code in your application, codify those functions, store them separately in a directory or even Riak objects, and refer to them by name in your code. Or, better yet, write it in Erlang.
grourk··on On moving from CouchDB to Riak
Given that Riak seems to implement buckets "for free" by essentially making them key prefixes under-the-hood, does the bucket name size need to be considered as part of the key size? e.g., if my bucket name is 32 chars and my keys in that bucket are 32 chars, should I be using 64 bytes for average key size?

This is a question I've gotten conflicting answers to.

grourk··on How Deaf People Think
Those born deaf and not taught sign language will invent their own sign language. There are no human cultures without language.

Spoken (or signed) language is natural for humans, and developed as a form of telepathy. I can get a thought that's in my head into your head over a great distance transmitted over noisy media in a short time with a few words. But the thought in my head isn't in the form of an extremely ambiguous language like English or ASL or whatever I happened to learn as a child. It's the other way around: the thoughts come first.

Check out The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker for a nice overview on the scientific understanding around this.

grourk··on Tarsnap critical security bug
Looks like you rolled a hard six. ;-)
grourk··on I always forget the argument order of the `ln -s` command
A co-worker once told me to remember it like: "I have a (src) that I'd like to call (dst)"
grourk··on I’ve given up using soap & shampoo forever
Conditioner is meant to restore the moisture to your hair that shampoo takes. It makes sense that by only using conditioner your hair felt greasy.
grourk··on So You Want To Join A Startup?
I cannot upvote this enough.
grourk··on Zuckerberg Talks Privacy, “The Social Network” on “60 Minutes” [video]
I find it healthy and refreshing to take a step back frequently and look at these things from such a perspective. Like, say the perspective of your parents. I think it's that kind of reflection which helps make businesses like Facebook and entrepreneurs like Zuckerberg successful.

grourk··on Hey Google. You should compete with Dropbox.

grourk··on Intuition has no transfer encoding
This post really articulated something I've been thinking a lot about lately. It's taken a long time for me to realize that I should trust my gut more.

However, the description about how we learn language is completely wrong.

grourk··on List of YC Companies
You should add ZumoDrive and ZumoCast (products) to the Zecter entry.
grourk··on How Hacker News ranking algorithm works
Maybe what's hidden is the code for determining what counts as a vote. e.g., multiple votes from the same IP may be discounted or simply counted as a single vote. Or a bunch of votes coming from fresh accounts created at or after submission time.
grourk··on Apple Approves VLC For iPad
ZumoCast has that functionality (a download button, for offline viewing).
grourk··on Free ZumoCast (YC S07) App Streams Music, Movies From Computer To iPad, iPhone
Yep, it'll work from a different network -- 3G as well.
grourk··on ZumoCast Is Like Cloud Storage Without The Cloud, Or The Cost
Here's another invite code for the private beta: http://www.zumocast.com/?i=hackernews

You have to give your UUIDs for iPhone/iPad and we'll send an ad-hoc build shortly after. But you can install the server app and see the web interface immediately.

grourk··on Online backup to S3 for the Mac
Check out Quillen for snapshot backups directly to S3. Simple command-line interface, easy for scripting. Also open source. http://quillen.googlecode.com/
grourk··on Automatically followed by abusive ex-husband (and his friends) on Google Buzz
It's a bit unfair to say that Twitter is bad at privacy. Twitter is public by its very nature. Google Buzz seems to be the same. Don't want to participate? Turn it off.

I would also disagree that Facebook's take on privacy is "downright scary," given the range of privacy settings you can choose. It's not some half-assed implementation on their part. Perhaps you take issue with the default settings?

No one set of privacy options will work for everyone for any of these tools. And when you choose to use one, you're responsible for what you say and do with it. So maybe the real issue is that Google decided to enable Buzz automatically. It was a choice they made, and I don't think it was necessarily the wrong one.

The only thing the Google Buzz Engineers should be working on this weekend is removing the huge lag for posts showing up in the feed.

grourk··on Ask HN: Propaganda for creative salary manipulation?
You seem to forget that tax brackets are marginal.
grourk··on ZumoDrive (YC S07) Is a Silver Lining In 'Cloud' Storage
He was most likely referring to the ZumoDrive "folder linking" feature, where you can link an existing folder on your system with ZumoDrive, instead of moving it.
grourk··on Chrome OS: Internet Failing At PC PC Failing At Internet
"...five ChromeOS portables are five caches for the same cloud-based user and application data..."

I think this is the real killer-app here: having all of your data (documents, pictures, music, movies, etc.) in ONE place accessible from ALL your devices, and impervious to failure of those devices.
