grogenaut··on eBay explicitly bans AI "buy for me" agents in user agreement update
There are 9 time zones in the US and depending on what your buying in the eu, jp, etc, I'm not going to be up to deal with the end of an auction, either too early too late or you know I have a real efing job and i'm doing something. Having ends of auction require you to be around means you lock out large parts of the market.

I Write Sins Not Tragedies - Panic at the disco:

So you're a guest at a wedding and you're eavesdropping and passing judgement on people based on a snippet of conversation. Ruined.

Example:

Going the Distance - He's bad at racing and can't realize it. He's burning real relationships. I'd otherwise love this song.

Years ago my brother pointed out that lyrics are just a form of percussion.

I'm glad they add for you, they typically detract for me.

Not paying attention to the lyrics also les me deal with music as just grooves in a flow state as well.

I try and also never actually listen to the lyrics of songs, like 90% of the time I'm disappointed and it ruins the song for me.

boo, it's in the middle of no where along part of the route. Tmobile coverage is mainly in urban areas and along free ways no matter what slingblade tells you on the tv commercial. I don't know if you'd get any coverage on parts of that route other than wired.

Just like how sometimes when you're flying over the rockies or into canada you just don't get internets. There's still middles of no where out there. Often not very far from the freeway.

grogenaut··on Vietnam bans unskippable ads
what's sad is that it's not the company who is causing you to see that ad fill, few companies want you to be spammed back to back with the same ad. it's the low ad fill rate on the platform or target for you meaning the company is one of the few ads in the pool. I look at it as they're trying to support the type of content you watch but not many people are. or trying to sell to you specifically.

early on in streaming there'd be so little fill you'd be getting mad at say blizzard for spamming ads in a games related place but they were the only one buying ads and supporting those streams. it's not blizzards fault taht the rest of the advertisers didn't trust that channel and.

grogenaut··on I replaced Windows with Linux and everything's going great
Agreed. AMD just works for me on linux. My problem is that I am addicted to 6+ monitors and top end gpus... nvidia just seems to hate linux for top end setups. Which is sad, windows just handles my dumb 5060+5090 setup easily. Gaming on linux has gotten way better, but I still can't gigure out how to get some games working. So I'm stuck between using linux + sway / i3 which I looooove... and not being able to get the value out of my $6k gaming rig. Sadly this is a tale that's been going on for 20 years for me.

grogenaut··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
most of the trip was in the lowest (most efficient) mode...
grogenaut··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
I wouldn't buy a mach-e to baby it and feather the pedal, like what's the point.

I have several fun to drive relatively fuel efficient cars that are sunk costs. I work from home, they're just getting old. I have a pickup to go do dirty things like duck hunting.

The ev seems great for driving to work (I work from home) or around town. I was very unimpressed with it's short trip range and efficiency on a hill (whole trip empg was 44). I spent half as much time at the charger as I did driving. I'm sure it'll get better. Much higher charging speed would help a lot (Mach-e is limited to 150). The extended range battery would help.

Any other sub 3.5s 0-60 under 70 evs out there? If you can't tell I don't care about pure efficiency, I care about a fun to drive car that's got better efficiency than an IC and a usable range.

grogenaut··on Ford kills the All-Electric F-150
I rented a mach-e recently. Went up to Snoqualamie pass from seattle. I used over 60 miles range in 10 miles on the steep part at the end, 1/6th. Going the other way I got a maybe 20% boost in distance over flat. There were a few places I was able to regen-brake, but I never had the battery go up, only stay flat. And a few times I lost enough speed that I didn't handle an interim flat well. I was extremely disappointed.

It turns out friction and drag are still things. On a pure downhill you would be able to roll, but it's not as good as going down is bad.

I also found that the car did a lot worse rolling down hill than my mini-cooper manual when I just put the clutch in, which got up to hairy speeds. Heck vehicle seemed to have more inbuilt resistance to just rolling than the fire engine I've run down that hill.

Overall I got 90 total miles of range and hit the flat at 10% battery. I was able to get 290 miles driving in seattle with the same vehicle.

grogenaut··on Bag of words, have mercy on us
Vhs came out in 76, blockbuster started in 85 (we went to video stores well before that when I was a kid), dvd in 95. I remember the sopranos making a joke about how dvd was barely taking off, they started in 99. Lets call it VHS had a run from 80 to 99, that's 19 years. The iphone launched in 2007, when did mobile become huge or inseprable from doing life (by force by so many apps), probbably in the pandemic.

I wouldn't say VHS was a blip. It was the recorded half video of media for almost 20 years.

I agree with the rest of what you said.

I'll say that the differences in the AI you're talking about today might be like the differences between VAX, PC JR, and the Lisa. All things before computing went main stream. I do think things go mainstream from tech a lot faster these days, people don't want to miss out.

I don't know where I'm going with this, I'm reading and replying to HN while watching the late night NFL game in an airport lounge.

grogenaut··on Bag of words, have mercy on us
Your analogy makes no sense. VHS spawned the entire home market, which went through multiple quality upgrades well above beta. It would only make sense if in 2025 we were using vhs everywhere and that the current state of the art for LLMs is all there ever is.

grogenaut··on My dad could still be alive, but he's not
Excellent summary!
grogenaut··on My dad could still be alive, but he's not
yet it can help. no direct counter stats to your stats but different data: https://www.mediconefoundation.org/whyandhowtohelp/ https://newsroom.uw.edu/news-releases/study-spotlights-cardi...

getting compressions going and getting an AED onboard is the focus of this program. that means getting people and responders trained on CPR + AED.

grogenaut··on My dad could still be alive, but he's not
Like most things, it gets pretty complicated. I went through 200 hours of training (EMT) which essentially helps me sort into what makes me go safe, go fast to a medic en route or a hospital, and go fast to a hospital (where a paramedic can't help much or at all). The goal of all Emergency medical personnel is to get people to definitive care (not EMS).

Asking a lay person to know what a BLS (non-EMT fire & police), EMT (Ambulance), Parmedic, or MSO can take care of, or even what the differences are, is, I don't think, super useful. The red vehicle shows up and takes you to care.

In the case of MCI, EMTs can a) give aspirin or nitro (rx), b) have an AED and lots of CPR training but have to stop the vehicle to give effective compressions, c) a radio and the ability to meet up with Paramedics.

Paramedics have more complex treatments (drugs) and EKGs, but it's still 2 folks in a truck, not a hospital. They can do amazing things.

But as the joke goes, sometimes the best treatment is High Volume Diesel Therapy (burn rubber).

grogenaut··on My dad could still be alive, but he's not
At least in my area, King County area, a call of severe chest pain would immediately get units rolling code (lights+sirens) for CHEST PAIN. Pulse point, which works in our area, would also start paging BLS certified people in the neighborhood who have the app.

When I've called 911, the dispatchers grilled me going right down the list of signs and symptoms and did an excellent triage job.

I'm a volunteer EMT / FF at a pretty rural station, and the thing that slows us down the most is traffic if we're coming from behind the accident, and distance. As the sibling / gp said, the dispatchers know where we are via gps at almost all times and usually tell the RP (Reporting Party) when we're close so someone can go out and flag us down.

I don't mean to be argumentative, just provide what I know working as a volly FF/EMT for a year. As others have said, this is tragic.

My m2 max flew too close to the sun with its design. It's a amazing laptop. Drives 4 monitors with ease. Rarely turns on the fan. But the USB ports keep frying if they take power because this thing is a beast. The right one goes first. Then the front left then the back left eventually. Problem is I just can't always power it from that back left one depending on which dock I plug into. I try and run off the maglock. Been in for depot replace of board 2x now. After second repair right USB died in 2 hours after it was pulling power off of that port and not the dock or mag.

Still a great computer but $7500 for something that kills itself 3 times in 3.5 years sucks. Luckily it's a company computer and they're giving me a m4 max

That's why I don't tend to play these games. I was about 5 hours into trs1000 when I was like man I could just learn GPU or fpga with a real editor instead but that would be useful. And stopped playing. With factorio I could be laying out circuit boards. So I did that instead.
grogenaut··on Viagrid – PCB template for rapid PCB prototyping with factory-made vias [video]

grogenaut··on Samsung makes ads on smart fridges official with upcoming software update
When I bought my new fridge I told the sales guy I wanted the least features possible. "You don't want an in door ice maker" "How many of those have you seen that aren't broken" "not many. no through door window?" "I know there's milk in the fridge why do I need to see that there's milk in the fridge?" down and down the list. Eventually we settled on a very bare bones whilrpool french door. It's very simple. My previous fridge I could fix with a screwdriver and a piece of wire. These things push cold air from a compressor that lasts 50 years if it's not fucked with by electronics and some boxes that are all passive insulation. They were solved problems 30 years ago.

The speed queen washer that came with the house failed. The 30 year old lid switch literally fell apart. $10 on amazon next day. Took me 10 minutes and youtube to take the machine apart. It's meant to be serviced and I'm handy. I don't get engineers who won't try and fix their appliances. It's like a free weekend day entertainment for me.

There's quite a few, many hardened locks will bend or mar bolt cutters... we're not taking bolt cutters off of the rigs because they're relatively small but a K12 and a pair of pliers is way more reliable.

if a cop has to have a specific piece of equipment to get the cars to move then it's always going to be a problem. The cops can move every other vehicile with a standard issue piece of equipment, aka their hands, and well yelling at people. If they have to get some magic QR gloves or placards to get waymos to move then that's going to be an issue.
