grey-area··on I Have a Confession: I Built This Site with AI – Please Forgive Me
> To be clear, none of the content, but the site engine itself is all AI built.

Feels a bit odd to apologise for this. I mean the only downside is you might get hacked if you don't understand your code or what it might be missing, but it's a personal blog, so I don't really see what real damage this would do or why you'd have to apologise for trying something out, whatever tools you use.

If you'd used AI to generate the content that would be a different matter, and is what people complain about as it is killing the internet. Instagram for example is now completely infested with AI generated slop, posting huge dollops of slop under videos that nobody ever reads.

Running out of men and material.

When they have to conscript in Moscow Putin will be in trouble.

I don't think the word content is appropriate for the Illiad. Do you?

It's a word from advertising and TV production, for the stuffing which fills the space between adverts.

Your speculation on ego etc is neither helpful nor an observation; not everything needs a pop-psy explanation.

grey-area··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
I find the words consumption and content problematic. They encourage you to look at the world in a certain way. What would happen to your world view if you step outside the confines of those words, defined by advertisers who don't care about quality but instead measure clicks, engagement and profits and have encouraged the worst sort of 'content' to thrive (short form videos with very little substance)?

Most good art or writing requires engagement from the reader and something is created in engaging with it, something new that exists between the original work and the world of the reader. So I fundamentally disagree with the framing that reading is a passive activity and requires no creativity or engagement, or that creating is fundamentally different from engaging with the creations of others.

grey-area··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
No, it is not all just ‘content’ which is roughly the same and can be consumed like a snack. That’s a word used by people who think thoughts, feelings and stories are just carriers for advertising and selling you things.

Words matter, don’t take your word choice from ad factories instagram which popularised this term.

Reading (I won’t say consuming) a good book can stay with you forever. People from 2000 years ago can speak to you in their own voice from behind the grave. And you have the audacity to call it content and compare it to cat videos and call it ‘overhyped’?

grey-area··on The LLMentalist Effect (2023)
That OpenAI stole the discovery from them.
grey-area··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Re speechwriters, he’d never get another job if he didn’t say that.

AI has replaced neither full tech roles nor speechwriters.

I think that’s a good example of the kind of trivial error humans make all the time when not rereading/editing. When humans make mistakes, it’s usually that kind of mistake, which IMO doesn’t really matter in an internet comment.

Unfortunately LLMs make gross errors of style and content and often just don’t make any sense in long form text. That’s a very different category of error.

grey-area··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Definite ‘work stuff’ because most work stuff is read by colleagues, otherwise why was it written?
grey-area··on I think you should almost never use AI to write
Speech writers do not write in the voice of someone else, they create the public image of say a president who is inarticulate and make them seem polished and articulate, if anything they lend their voice and ideas to someone else. That’s why they are hired.

And no LLMs are not producing ‘the same thing’ as a speechwriter. If you are unable to tell the difference I’d suggest doing some a lot more reading of human books. LLMs produce stultifying pablum without coherence or style.

I don’t think a $2k phone is anywhere near mass market, esp given the likely downturn ahead.
grey-area··on GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher
This particular exploit belongs something between points 2 and 3 in your list and was more about processing data with a known algorithm and known key for the dataset that nobody had tried, so I'd say it is less impressive than a lot of other results LLMs have had in cryptanalysis. I object to the headline but the article was interesting.
grey-area··on GPT-6 Astra Solves a WWI German Radio Cipher
Using an existing published key, which people hadn’t tried because the message was sent before the key was supposed to be used.

This headline is misleading.

grey-area··on Xcode 27.1 Beta Release Notes
Because Apple has always treated its developers so well!

Vision Pro will be cancelled at some point, it’s just nowhere near popular enough and never will be - the air has gone out of that VR bubble.

I wouldn’t be surprised if duo is also cancelled because it is another copycat move which is not central to Apples business and will not be mass market.

grey-area··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
It is not in fact close to zero, it is significant inflation, particularly as they tend to float over the target (3-4%).

At 2% over just 25 years money loses 60% of its value. That is not insignificant, and of course with higher rates it loses value quicker.

grey-area··on Towards Self-Driving Codebases
The more important question - how would you actually get LLM agents to follow the instructions in your ever-growing CAPA reliably?

It’s all very well having a list of actions to avoid but that doesn’t help if your agents won’t reliably follow it.

grey-area··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
Fed policy is explicitly controlled inflation (2% target).
grey-area··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
There is one obvious choice here, the policy is inflation and always has been.
grey-area··on Suspected sabotage causes major Netherlands rail disruption
I don’t think so, it is at best a proxy war on the Europe side at present. They are supporting Ukraine.

On the Russian side however they are carrying out brazen attacks in EU member states and crossing air and maritime boundaries.

Whether the EU should respond in kind is a whole other question.

They have in fact claimed this.

grey-area··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
Prominent figures in OpenAI have claimed they have already attained AGI.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/openai-releases-its-lat...

"OpenAI released its latest model, GPT-6 Astra, on Thursday, with company President Greg Brockman calling it the beginning of the artificial general intelligence (AGI) era."

But they're still peddling ads instead of improving the world. How odd.

grey-area··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
When OpenAI (including Altman, Brockman etc) stop talking about AGI, we can all stop talking about AGI. I'd happily do so.

Currently their actions completely contradict their claims of emergent intelligence.

grey-area··on A warning about 'model welfare'
It's the peak of hubris to assume that human brains are the only way to attain intelligence. At the very least there probably are or have been other forms of intelligence with a different biological structure on other planets, and it may be possible to build a similar artificial structure in future with sufficient complexity to allow intelligence to emerge.

Our current machines are IMO nowhere near general intelligence and consciousness. However I don't think that means we can discount substrates other than neurones for intelligence in future. There is no evidence that you could not in theory build an intelligence using a different substrate than human brains.

grey-area··on PS5 Linux lead quits: "a bunch of noobs using LLMs" that "they don't understand"
It is not fine.
grey-area··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
If they need capital in the short term and were anywhere close to AGI, they could easily generate it, by spinning up their incredibly capable and intelligent agents to generate capital through doing useful work. They could also fire entire departments within their own org and replace them with agents, if they had something close to AGI.

Instead they are selling a dream to the gullible, and advertisements to go along with that dream.

grey-area··on A warning about 'model welfare'
Well, if there was an emergent consciousness in the billion transistors, then yes, it'd have feelings, just as there are feelings in a billion neurons connected in complicated ways.

IMO we're clearly nowhere near any sort of intelligence in the machines we have created, but I don't see any clear way to deny intelligence could be created in or transferred to such a substrate, I don't see why you think it differs in principle - because it is man-made or because of the materials used?

grey-area··on OpenAI expands ChatGPT ads with Sponsored Agents
It’s pocket change compared to the money that could be made with real AGI.

This move tells us they don’t think they’re anywhere near AGI, directly contradicting their bombast and puffery on the subject.
