greg7mdp··on The New Touch-Bar-Equipped MacBook Pros and the State of the Mac
The great thing about daringfireball is that there is no need to read the article to find out that the latest Apple device is just about perfect.
greg7mdp··on I’m Sorry Mr. Zuckerberg, but You Are Wrong
Of course he is wrong - and he knows it full well. But he would be foolish to accept responsibility for the election, especially since he doesn't have a way to solve the issue without making Facebook worse for users. After all, most of us enjoy seeing our opinions validated by our friends, and the stories we read, regardless of their accuracy.

Facebook is already alienating some users with the recent barrage of advertising, no need to open a new front!

greg7mdp··on Ask HN: I'm about to graduate. Why should I consider a MSc in Computer Science?
Well, think hard about what you'd like to do every working day of your life for the next 10-20 years at least. You should consider a MSc in CS if the answer to this question is learning to be a better programmer and coding.
greg7mdp··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
Hahaha, that is funny/tragic. Outsourcing hiring a director of engineering to a moron with a cheat sheet! Your answers were great, though, and indeed on the systems I have tried the popcount() computation with the bit shifts you suggested is faster than using an 8 bit lookup table. (however the SSE4 popcnt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE4#POPCNT_and_LZCNT) is faster still).
greg7mdp··on How Mobile Compute Revolutionizes Photography: Bokeh vs. Blur(‘Tabs vs. Spaces’)
On kickstarter there are some projects bringing back the famous Meyer Optik trioplan and primoplan: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/meyeroptik/bring-back-t...
greg7mdp··on Myths about Hash Tables
If you are interested in hash tables, check out my improved version of Google's already excellent sparsehash at https://github.com/greg7mdp/sparsepp. Excellent performance, very low memory usage, grows as needed of course.
greg7mdp··on Edward Snowden Says Disclosures Bolstered Individual Privacy
Hard to disagree that Snowden's revelations brought some needed sunlight on the shady - possibly illegal - practices of our governement, practices which had been denied by government officials in official testimony in front of congress. As such, he is clearly more of a whistleblower than a traitor.
greg7mdp··on Why Apple removed the headphone port from the iPhone 7
Fair enough! I was just surprised by the ending - I agree with most of what you wrote though, and I enjoyed reading the article.
greg7mdp··on Why Apple removed the headphone port from the iPhone 7
Kind of odd that the article basically argues that the main reason Apple dropped the headphone port was to make more money at the expense of its users - and was dishonest by pretending it was to make the phone waterproof... but then the author still orders the iPhone 7.

Apple's blatant marketing bullshit really rubs me the wrong way.

greg7mdp··on Apple’s dual camera phone will change photography as we know it
Because the two cameras have different focal length (28mm and 56mm), the main advantage will be to provide a limited optical zoom, and maybe some kind of subject isolation if the subject is in the center of the field.

The phone cameras have already changed photography as we know it by displacing consumer cameras - as evidenced by the dramatic drop in sales for camera manufacturers in the last five years.

However, DSLRs and enthusiast mirrorless cameras are doing fine, and this new iphone is no more threat than the previous one.

greg7mdp··on Image super resolution through deep learning
Wow, that is really cool! When will we have a lightroom plugin with this? I should listen to my son and start playing with Tensorflow.
greg7mdp··on What to use instead of std::set [pdf]
Well, you certainly could, but unordered_set will use significantly more memory than the sorted vector or sparse_hash_set, and is actually slower than sparse_hash_set.
greg7mdp··on What to use instead of std::set [pdf]
Actually, if you don't need the entries to be sorted, the sparse_hash_set from https://github.com/greg7mdp/sparsepp is much faster than std::set or a sorted vector (except for iteration) and barely uses more memory than the sorted vector.
greg7mdp··on Sparsepp: improving on Google's sparsehash
Author here. Disappointed with the apparent lack of interest, considering that sparsepp is likely the best choice today when you need an unordered_map or set.
greg7mdp··on STGi: Visual STG implementation to help understand Haskell's execution model
That's what I like about Haskell. Brilliant people writing really cool stuff. I'm constantly amazed by Haskell libraries!
greg7mdp··on The surprising cleverness of modern compilers
That's the whole point, even from the long version, clang figured out that it was doing a popcount and emited a single popcntq instruction. Nice!
greg7mdp··on Julian Assange, WikiLeaks founder, denied asylum in France
Sad for France! We welcomed Jean-Claude (baby doc) Duvalier and ayatollah Khomeini, but I guess Assange and Snowden will not receive asylum.
greg7mdp··on Ask HN: Markdown-like structured document format
Maybe pandoc would work for you (http://pandoc.org/)

from the documentation:

"Unlike standard markdown, Pandoc allows ordered list items to be marked with uppercase and lowercase letters and roman numerals, in addition to arabic numerals. List markers may be enclosed in parentheses or followed by a single right-parentheses or period. They must be separated from the text that follows by at least one space, and, if the list marker is a capital letter with a period, by at least two spaces.1"

Also, see http://pandoc.org/README.html#citations

greg7mdp··on The Time Needed to Write “Effective Modern C++”
Love the book!
greg7mdp··on A Cover Letter in Brainfuck
This is brilliant!
greg7mdp··on Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg: 'WhatsApp worth more than $19bn' – video
In facebook stock, sure :-)
greg7mdp··on Ask HN: Stock mac photos
go to http://unsplash.com/ and scroll down, you'll find them.
greg7mdp··on Functional programming C++ template library
Wow, that is beautiful! Thanks.
greg7mdp··on Scalia says atheism 'favors the devil's desires'
Sometimes, it is embarrassing to be an American.
greg7mdp··on Ask HN: Can we agree to a ceasefire about the NSA?
Sorry, but no. The NSA spying on us is very bothersome to a lot of hackers, so why shouldn't we talk about it in Hacker News?

If you want sanitized iPhone announcements there are plenty of sites for that. And indeed the fingerprint system in the 5s could allow further privacy intrusions.

greg7mdp··on Cheney Defends PRISM
How come I'm not surprised?
greg7mdp··on IOS 7 vs. Windows Phone 8
Who's copying who now?
greg7mdp··on Ask HN: Why isn't there a "search" on HN?
there is... at the bottom of the page.
greg7mdp··on VCs Think My Boobs Need An Algorithm
You obviously don't need an algorithm to find a catchy title :-)
greg7mdp··on Schmidt: Microsoft will never be as cool as the Gang of Four
Yeah, sure, and a computer will never need more than 640K of memory. Back then Bill also though he knew it all!
