greenhatman··on Young and unafraid of the pandemic? Good for you. Now stop killing people
It frustrates me so much that almost no one gets this.
greenhatman··on Quarantine will normalize WFH and recession will denormalize full-time jobs
It might not necessarily be toxic. But it's a possible red flag that the company doesn't trust their employees. And that they time lunch breaks and other breaks.

That's exactly it. Exponential growth can only be cut short if proper containment measures are followed. If not, infection rates will look like the S curve of popular technology adoption rates, where it only tapers off when nearly everyone has been infected.
greenhatman··on Robinhood goes down again, during another historic trading day
Sometimes the reason it's done that way, is because they were in a rush in the first iteration, and never got around to refactoring.

Loads of VC money means you can take more time up front to architect things better. Maybe have more experiences engineers and architects on the team from the start.

greenhatman··on Exponential Growth and Covid-19 [video]
I don't understand the difference between surpressed and contained?

Yeah, if they stop containing it, it will start spreading again...

greenhatman··on I found and fixed a bug in PHP's standard library
It can become much more convoluted than just having a function used in many places. It usually takes the form of multiple levels of inheritance. And it's a pain to deal with, and somewhat of a pain to refactor as well.
greenhatman··on Tars: Tencent's microservice RPC framework, open-sourced to Linux Foundation
I think I can probably speak for all English second language speakers, as I am one - Can everyone just stick to English? Otherwise I have to learn a third language.

English is pretty important. It's not really possible to collaborate effectively with people that you can't communicate with.

greenhatman··on Elon Musk wins 'pedo guy' defamation case
The diver got away with just as much. That is, insulting someone.
greenhatman··on GitHub Trip Report
I view any branch that only I work on as my sandbox as well. You should only ever rebase non-public branches in any case. So I don't see the problem.
greenhatman··on GitHub Trip Report
I prefer to squash away commits that leave the code in a non-working state. Because it makes using git bisect easier later if you need to find a commit that broke something.
greenhatman··on Some scientists are serious about resurrecting zeppelins for cargo
Floating bridges sound a lot easier and less dangerous.
greenhatman··on Open-Source Home Automation
You could also edit the home automation script or block the phone on the router if remote wipe isn't an option.
greenhatman··on Replace Windows 7 with Linux
Nvidia on Linux. Nothing to do with FOSS.

I'm running the closed source Nvidia drivers and everything runs 100%. I can run most games as well.

greenhatman··on Aviation safety: Transport comparisons
If you're trying to figure out whether it's safer do drive somewhere than to fly, the only metric that is relevant is deaths per unit of distance.
greenhatman··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
@here is not asynchronous.

It sounds to me like they were using Slack for discussions that should have happened on a Google Doc or ticketing system.

If people are constantly pinging you on Slack they're doing it wrong, and you need to let them know.

greenhatman··on Jimmy Wales has quietly launched a Facebook rival
Instead of ads, it will just have a huge banner on top with Jimmy Wales' face asking for donations.
greenhatman··on PayPal stops payouts to models on Pornhub
Great for those of us who don't already have enough stress in our lives yet.
greenhatman··on We are making Sandboxie a free tool, with plans to transition it to open source
Then you're probably on scammy sites too often.

The only sites I know of that does that are pirate sites.

greenhatman··on Blogwashing
If there are significant changed, I'd rather write a new post.

You can add a link to the new post somewhere on the old post.

The text is too small and spans most of the screen. Difficult to read on big monitors. Reading that grey block on mobile is also really straining. I actually just gave up and came to read the comments instead.

The word 'download' is exactly the same font as everything else. So it's hard to find. Why not have a button that stands out? There are 2 links called 'click here'. So you have the read the surrounding text before knowing where you want to click. I can't think of a good reason not to have a clear call to action button that stands out from the rest of the page.

Compared to almost any modern site, this is really bad.

greenhatman··on Deep Sleep May Help the Brain Clear Alzheimer's Toxins
Peter Attia recommends Oura Ring.

greenhatman··on Stop Infinite Scrolling
Using links or buttons would suck for a lot of use cases. Imagine what it would work like on your phone if you couldn't scroll through Twitter, but had to touch buttons.
greenhatman··on Stop Infinite Scrolling
You need to choose between having a footer and using infinite scroll. Can't do both.
greenhatman··on Stop Infinite Scrolling
Or if you can, make the pages the same size as the screen. Then you don't have to scroll and can just keep your pointer on the next button.
greenhatman··on It Shouldn't Be This Hard to Responsibly Fly a Drone
I just had a neighbour fly their drone outside my window. It's really noisy and kind of causes anxiety.

So you can call it what you want, but I don't want it near me.

I'll give them a pass this once. Maybe it's new and they just wanted to try it out. But I'm definitely going to take steps to remove it if I hear it again.

greenhatman··on Dark Patterns
Not sure this is a GMail feature. This would technically be possible with any HTML link styled like a button.
greenhatman··on Software made me loathe my car
I accidentally stumbled on this yesterday while looking for something else: https://www.autopi.io/

greenhatman··on Cities Are Saying ‘No’ to 5G, Citing Health, Aesthetics, and FCC Bullying
Services and products that will utilize more bandwidth aren't being built, because they're not usable without 5G. 5G needs to become ubiquitous before we'd find out what the new applications will be.

G5 will also reduce latency a lot, which is another vector that will open new possibilities.

greenhatman··on Cities Are Saying ‘No’ to 5G, Citing Health, Aesthetics, and FCC Bullying
5G will probably drive AR and VR adoption. Enabling remote surgery, and other things like that. Who knows what else.

Really we have no idea of the the doors it could happen. In the 90s many people thought the internet was a gimmick or a fad. Today the most successful companies are built on it. It's very likely the same will be true for 5G enabled technologies and companies.

greenhatman··on Survivors of rare wolf attack recount how animal tried to drag man from tent
It's about how easy it is. In some parts of Africa you do get Lions that prey on humans.

If Lions who attack humans always get killed, only the ones that don't survives and reproduces.
