greenhatman··on Tauri vs. Electron – Real world application
This actually makes me think Electron will be a lot easier to support. Because at least you'd be able to control which version of Chromium your app ships with. If you're using Tauri, you'll need to support all the different versions of WebView that are out there.
greenhatman··on Chrome allows websites to write to the clipboard without the user’s permission
It wasn't always like that. I think it changed 2 or 3 years ago.
greenhatman··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
But it only happens after spending a lot of time on a problem. You can also swap showering for walking.
greenhatman··on Why Electron Is a Necessary Evil
Simply, a lot of software that makes people's lives easier wouldn't exist without Electron. So yes, Electron is good.

The same amount of effort spent in Electron wouldn't get you a better native app. It would more likely get you no app.

greenhatman··on Rust Moderation Team Resigns
I suspect any popular technology will have drama in the communities surrounding it. Anything high value will have power struggles around it.

Same happened with Node as it gained popularity.

greenhatman··on Dopamine Fasting: A Maladaptive Fad (2020)
Is it insufficient dopamine or dopamine insensitivity?
greenhatman··on Rust Is the Future of JavaScript Infrastructure
Have you considered a career change? I'm sure there are jobs that don't require JavaScript.
greenhatman··on Remote work will break the US monopoly on global talent
As someone working remotely, I'd be hard pressed to work for a non-US company, because other places in my experience don't pay as well.
greenhatman··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
Does it also store a hash of the content? What if the content at the URI changes?
greenhatman··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
I'd be money on this actually being the case. This whole NFT craze is pure insanity.
greenhatman··on NFT misconception: JPEG aren't stored on the Blockchain
I don't think you're actually missing anything. I think those people are just insane.
greenhatman··on Redditors are right about the unfairness of the market
There is only one reason the share price goes up. And that is when there is more buying than selling pressure.

Now there are many reasons why buying and selling pressure fluctuates. But those don't directly influence price. It's only buying and selling.

greenhatman··on Redditors are right about the unfairness of the market
What you're describing is still zero sum. The share price only went up because there is a bigger fool willing to pay more. New investors are funding old investors' gains.

The only part that's not zero sum are the dividends that are paid out.

It's kind of all a big Ponzi scheme, just with some dividends thrown in. Well, not counting only paid out dividends, but also dividends that are speculated to be paid out some time in the future.

greenhatman··on France recalling ambassadors to the United States and to Australia
I think the contract was important for France for soft power in the around the Pacific ocean as well. It's probably a very big loss to them in that regard, and I can't see how they can ever make up for that again. They're permanently hamstrung basically.
greenhatman··on The new warrant: how US police mine Google for your location and search history
If it tracks signal strength as well, then it's just one extra step to triangulation.
greenhatman··on Silicon Valley finds remote work is easier to begin than end
You don't HAVE to stay at your current job.
greenhatman··on Ivermectin shows clinical benefits in mild to moderate COVID19: RCT double-blind
>all of which apparently lose all statistically-significant support for ivermectin once the fraudulent Egyptian study is removed from the data set

That's not my understanding from reading here: https://ivmmeta.com/

Looks at the graphs there, and then check out a few of the studies with low p-values.

greenhatman··on Doctors and pharmacists ramp up calls for Americans to stop using ivermectin
>The problem is that studies that show bad results has a lower chance of been written and a lower chance of been published and a lower chance of been collected in the sites

Okay, but there are basically no studies showing no or negative effects. Except for ones with massive p-values. You'd think there would at least be a few showing no effect.

greenhatman··on Zorin OS 16 is what a Linux desktop distribution should be
The main differences between distros are the desktop environments and the package managers.

I'd say those are meaningful choices.

greenhatman··on Israel’s Covid-19 boosters are preventing infections, new studies suggest
>your own cells to produce spike proteins similar to the ones sars-cov-2 does

Does this destroy the cell used to make the spike proteins? Or does your immune system destroy the cells that made spike proteins?

greenhatman··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
Maybe they don't really want to fill it.
greenhatman··on Does feeding garden birds do more harm than good?
The bullies tend to be loud and annoying. So I'd personally prefer not to have them in my yard. Geese are the worst.
greenhatman··on Watch Windows 95 crash live as it exceeds 49.7 days uptime [video]
So silly. I like it.
greenhatman··on US blocks shipments of semiconductors to Huawei
But would you argue that citizens in the U.S. and China have basically equal rights?
greenhatman··on US blocks shipments of semiconductors to Huawei
In the US it can land you in jail. See the case of Anthony Levandowski who took Waymo's self driving code over to Uber.

greenhatman··on How much ‘normal’ risk does Covid represent?
I also suspect reduced brain function and productivity for survivors of severe cases. Probably for months after. Maybe permanently.
greenhatman··on How much ‘normal’ risk does Covid represent?
But won't people who survive have an increased chance of death in the next few years as well? Seems probably that they would.

So overall deaths per capita will probably still be much higher than before for the next 5 to 10 years. Maybe longer.

greenhatman··on Suggest HN: No April Fools this year
I kinda hate April fools in any case. I'd be up for banning it indefinitely going forward.
greenhatman··on Ask HN: Book recommendations for understanding financial systems?
>while there are some fundamental principles at play, the world of finance is too messy and complicated for any one book to describe it. An even stronger statement I am willing to make is that no one person correctly and fully understands the financial system

All models are wrong, but some are useful.

greenhatman··on Several grumpy opinions about remote work at Tailscale
My biggest irritation in Slack is when people direct message me with 'Hi' and then wait for me to respond before they tell me what they need from me.

Please just tell me immediately what you need, so I can decide how urgently I need to reply. I don't want to reply to you, and then have to wait for your to type out what you need for me. It's a big distraction.
