greenbush··on Patterns of Regional Cerebral Blood Flow as a Function of Obesity in Adults
Note that BMI varies by ethnicity. BMI is meant to be a rough measure of body fat, but the muscle & fat ratios vary by ethnicity.

"When compared to white Europeans of the same BMI, Asians have 3 to 5 percent higher total body fat. South Asians, in particular, have especially high levels of body fat and are more prone to developing abdominal obesity, which may account for their very high risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In contrast, some studies have found that blacks have lower body fat and higher lean muscle mass than whites at the same BMI, and therefore, at the same BMI, may be at lower risk of obesity-related diseases."

greenbush··on Pulse oximeters give biased results for people with darker skin
Here's a good article that discusses why Black Americans have higher mortality rates:

"systemic racism is as much a part of biology as genomes are: The conditions in which we develop—including limited access to healthy food, exposure to toxic pollutants, the threat of police violence or the injurious stress of racial discrimination—influence the likelihood that any one of us will suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes or serious complications from COVID-19"

greenbush··on The world of cheap produce and its consequences
It's not quite that simple - you're comparing people from different socioeconomic classes, different environments of how they grew up, etc.

African migrants, unless they came as refugees, were usually upper middle or higher class - with college degrees and some degree of wealth in order to get here. They're typically not the average African, socioeconomically speaking.

Most Africans also haven't been weighed down by system racism their whole lives. For example, a Ghanaian friend told me that how never really understood racism until he moved to the US in his 20's as he had never experienced it in Ghana.

greenbush··on Engineering Dropbox Transfer: Making simple even simpler
I've been using croc for a few months and it works perfectly: https://github.com/schollz/croc . End to end encryption, command line only, and claims to be "faster than wormhole, rsync, scp through compression and multiplexing (speedups 1.5x to 4x)".
greenbush··on Show HN: Workout Daily. We text new 7-minute workouts daily to make fitness easy
Yes, they do. This article about the science behind 7 minute workouts (it's about intensity, not duration) generated a lot of interest: https://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2013/05/09/the-scientific-7-m...
greenbush··on Airbnb Suffers Big Defeat in Jersey City
Of course, AirBnB doesn't reveal the period of time that 96,100 residents used it and what percentage are still active. AirBnB has been around for more than 10 years, so the 96,100 users are over that long span of time!
greenbush··on Why office workers can't sleep and why that's bad
f.lux is awesome - it's been around for many years, and is free. Available for Linux, Mac, iOS, Android, and Windows! https://justgetflux.com/
greenbush··on Why is cognitive function impaired at high altitude?
Maybe read the article first before criticizing it? :) The article specifically addresses that and explains how this is more complicated than just oxygen deprivation.

"It’s not obvious why, though. The obvious culprit for reduced cognitive function is the thin high-altitude air depriving your brain of oxygen."

greenbush··on The Twilio API for WhatsApp
I use Telegram for this. They have an easy API and my servers can send me unlimited messages for free.
greenbush··on Alibaba’s UC Browser is dominating in Asian markets with lower-end smartphones
I don't think you read the article. :) The article specifically talks about smartphones, not feature phones. It mentions how Chrome is an issue for cheaper smartphones with less storage: "The UC Browser app takes up 31 megabytes of space, compared with Chrome’s 125 megabytes". And aside from a smaller app size, UC also compresses data and blocks ads to reduce data requirements (data tends to be expensive in emerging countries).

Let's face it, Chrome is designed by and for people living in the west, where people have smartphones with lots of storage and typically buy monthly plans with unlimited (or large allowance of) data.

greenbush··on The Best Monitor for Programming: A Cheap 40" 4K TV
Quick question for those that use a 40" monitor: how far away do you sit from it?
greenbush··on Hundreds of EPA Workers Leave in Recent Days
Here's the historical EPA budget and employee count from 1970 until now: https://www.epa.gov/planandbudget/budget

$8B/yr doesn't seem like that big of an investment to keep 320 Million people healthier and safer.

greenbush··on Lost Languages Discovered in One of the Oldest Continuously Run Libraries
The Google Drive app on Android (not sure about other platforms) has a "Scan" functionality that digitally flattens out the picture of a document and saves as a pdf. It's very handy and quality is very good.
greenbush··on Ask HN: What accounting software do you use?
We use Wave ( http://www.waveapps.com/ ) and are pretty happy with. Also, one bonus is that it's free, including if you have multiple companies. It also has bank feeds and pretty good multi-currency support.
